Amazing Grace

“Amazing Grace” is one of the most beloved Christian hymns of the last two centuries. These powerful lyrics have been passed down for generations and the melody performed by some of the world’s most legendary musicians. But it’s the story behind this stirring song that is truly amazing. The words were born from the heart and mind of an unlikely character: Englishman John Newton. In the early 1700s, during a long voyage home, Newton’s ship was caught in a horrendous storm off the coast of Ireland. For the first time in his life, Newton, a former enslaver and nonbeliever, decided to kneel and pray. Miraculously, the storm subsided, and the vessel drifted to safety. Newton took this as a sign from the Almighty, and marked it as his conversion to Christianity. This year, the Center for Visual Media and Publication partnered with CPA Arts to bring this reverent song about hope and redemption to life...reminding each of us that while once lost, we have now been found.
