Great video. I have the Schiit Yggdrasil Less is More Version and have been thinking about paying to upgrade it to MIB version. Your description of the Aero sounds exactly like the less is more version of the yggy. Slightly less detailed with better tonality and highs that are less incisive than say a chord. Not sure what to do now because I was also considering the upgrade to the Aero. It would be great if you could get your hands on a less is more version of the yggy for comparison. I am really interested to know when this mystery dac will be revealed. Thank you.
I upgraded my Original Yggy to a MIB version because of a channel imbalance ( I have had it on for years and years , I am not surprised. ) There was a difference but it wasn't night and day it was probably around 3 to 5 percent. So unless you have a issue with it leave be IMO. Hope this helps.
I am fairly confident that the Aero will be a better overall DAC than the LIM. The magic of the Aero goes beyond tonality alone, but it's also hard to describe because it's just the inherent character of a NOS and tube based design. If you can go for the Aero, that's what I'd be doing (and that's even though I love the Yggy).
@@PassionforSound I think you said in your review that this mystery dac sounds the same as the AERO and that it is song dependent on which sounds best....but it is far cheaper. @johnsimmons5056 they are still slightly different in presentation, but yes - they're very close despite the cost difference. I'll share more soon in the mystery DAC review.
Musical enjoyment and naturalness / timbre (AD1865 chip) are really hard to argue with ultimately imo. I have the MZ3 which is great headphone amp with the same David Berning circuitry which makes the current to voltage conversion using the unique patented ZOTL technology to achieve.

I’d love this DAC. I don’t mind that it’s fairly simple. Many (even high end) integrated solid state amps and DAC/amp combos use ESS OR AKM DACS. And while I think they are fine for most well recorded music, I think this would be a great addition to an audio set up when you want to feed your amps something a bit different, without having to buy multiple tube amps for different purposes. If only is was a 1/3 the price lol 😊
I agree, no reviewer is doing tube rolling on this, but I get way more air from the this dac with psvane globe 6sn7 (and these are not even top 6sn7)... tube rolling has a great impact and should be factored in.

You often ask for favorite test tracks for gear my suggestion is Geoff Castellucci “The sound of silence” or any of his recordings. He’s a bass vocalist and the recording quality is excellent on all of his music!
I find D/S push the soundstage forward which gives the illusion of detail but the soundstage for D/S is not correct. This is very clear with classical piano and symphony recordings.
Hi from Toronto 😎☕️ Great review! I still think DACs matter, but the gap is closing so it becomes about priorities and preferences more than anything absolute. Hope your week is great too!
In the LTA gear, the tubes run very lightly so you'll get years of use even if you leave it on all the time. Replacing the tubes can cost as little as $150 or so all the way up to $600-700.
Thank you (sort of no thank you, because I feel like I absolutely need this DAC!) for the review. How did you find the bass output for the Aero? I have the Gustard R26 and it's a little light on bass for my taste.
I didn't notice any lack of bass from the Aero, but that's the best I can really tell you because there was nothing noteworthy about its bass presentation to discuss. That's a good thing, IMO because you don't want the DAC to control your system's overall tonality other than to start off sounding very neutral/natural and that's where the Aero is so great. Of course, you can always track down a tube to get a more solid bottom end if you want some extra emphasis, but the stock tubes are very natural IMO.
@@PassionforSound Thanks. The Aero is so good. Far better than the Cyan 2, which I found excellent. Do you think the Apos Reserve tube upgrade is worth going for?
@@PassionforSound Nice. If that's your amp, I recommend some NOS Tung Sol 12SN7 Round Plate, Oval Mic tubes. They were recommended by Twittering Machines for the Aero. I got some and they are amazing.

To not have explored the differences in the Tubes is a little bit of a letdown in the review itself. Again regarding the tubes because they can make an extraordinary difference and sound.
The challenge is always balancing video length and content. Tube rolling is a niche area that far less people actually want information about (based on the metrics I have from countless previous tube rolling content). Because LTA already select very good quality tubes, this isn't like buying a cheap amp/DAC with low quality tubes where the performance can scale massively with a tube upgrade. Swapping tubes in the Aero is a game of nuance, not leaps and bounds.
