It's okay to let plants go. Sometimes you just need to declutter and maybe there will be a time you get them again - but that's not now. I like to bring plant cuttings and extras to work with a little tag that they are a gift for free. There is always someone who is really happy to take them. The "i need to sell them" epidemic with "rare" plants (TC ma guys = not rare at all) really has taken a lot of joy out of it. Don't stress it. Make your plants a gift. And if they suck just trash them. Always remember your hobbies are not your identity they serve you joy and when joy fades reduce - remove - and move on 😊💝
It is almost 11 o’clock at night where I am and literally as soon as he said “get rid of plants you don’t like or is causing problems“ I literally said “he’s totally right!”. I got up and threw away three plants that have been giving me problems and have not grown and have faded leaves. I’ve kept holding onto them cause I kept thinking when the weather gets warmer maybe things will be better. But they’ve been causing me a headache since fall. Thank you for the reminder! Hopefully others will also take your advice ❤😂.
Also! HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of clear or reusing the black plastic pots plants come in. Keep them where they are happy and easy to lift out and feel by the weight if they need water then simply return them to their pretty catchpot or basket. Take 99.9% of work out of your way or moisture meters. Repot her in your soil of choice mix and return her into the pot che came in unless shes exploding and needs a upgrade. Plastic pots save your sanity I swear by them. If you cannot lift heavy things plastic liner pots SAVE you on lifting a whole beast of a pot. Just lift that plant out water and return. Kills the guess work on unglazed pottery leaching to wetness sitting in the bottom of a pot you cant see.
When I first started out with plants it was because I was looking at style magazines in a bookstore and how a plant could be a focal point in a room. I went through my trial and error period figuring out what thrived in my space and what plants liked me. I have chronic pain so working my plants is my quiet time / therapy and for me its not about mass quantities it's about their leaves, growth, architecture to their structure / design. I have under 30 plants but I'm in the phase now of the glazed pottery I keep them in and top dressings. I loved the look of BenjiPlant's home and how each plant of his was like a story /calm and I try to do that in my own space. The beauty of a collection is, just like you its forever changing. I also do fiber hand work, cartooning, drawing, puzzling, book clubs, and cutting out strips for my Mom's quilting. It's good to not obsess over things and spread your interests around.
You preached Heaven down! I'm realizing now that I've probably never burned out because of thought it was WILD to water plants more than once a week! I have ONE PLANT out of 110 that I have to water more than once a month AND WE THANK GOD
This is the conversation we plant parents need. I'm giving myself a $175 big box budget for my next plant haul. That may seem like a lot to some _but_ I'm including soil, fertilizer, pest control, and new pots in that overall budget. I'm also making a list of what I have and what I would like to have, I'm writing it down and bringing my list with me to avoid temptation. I really want my plant babies to be a joy ... not a burden. ❤
@@MaryObi-v5d seems like you have it all planned out and organized! And I think $175 is super reasonable . I like to start with one major plant purchase for the year and ease off till much later in the year !
I hear you 💚 when your collection starts getting bigger than you can handle the fatigue is real. Keep the ones that bring you the most joy and don’t feel guilty about passing plants along that don’t give you that spark anymore. ❤🇿🇦
Great video! Yes Ebuka Im with you!!!! No more stressing over these mealybugs...just let them go on to glory peacefully. No more propagation and if Im no longer loving one of my babies...Ill gift them to someone that'll love them😊.. This year is about peace, love, declutter and less stress!!! If I do purchase a plant or two thats it...but I will start another mini garden for my salads and herbs😊
I have been doing just that after being tired for very long time managing all plants. This hobby helps me forget my stress. It's like meditation when I don't get overwhelmed by watering and pests. I am shifting all my plants into the plastic pots. Terracotta pots r very heavy and need constant watering. Instead of buying, I m getting cuttings and saving cost and stress. If they survive, good. If not better luck next time. But throwing expensive calatheas in compost bin, it hurts. So I decided not to get into calathea, anthuriums, alocasia etc.
Such a great video! ❤ i feel so called out about the throwing out. I am lucky that I live in the bush, so any houseplants that are weighing me down I put well away from the house outside and wish them well. Some start to thrive, and I bring them back 😂 Or I will put plants on the footpath for free snd let the local community groups know, so the plants have the chance to torment a new house.
Semi hydro is a game changer. I traveled a lot last year for work and my plants still survived due to semi hydro setup even my alocasias. I wish you could blow that Nigeria heat to the USA, it’s 🥶 freezing especially next week.
Unfortunately it’s so expensive to set up here. LECA is virtually a luxury, if not i would’ve done so with these indoor girls . And I wouldn’t mind some of that cold here actually lol 😂
For the heirloom plants, some are worth it. I have Aspidistras (Cast Iron Plants) that were my grandmothers and are well over 80 years old. They are about the only plant I’d fight for, so am glad that they are amazingly hardy and will survive pretty much anything.
I had downsized a LOT in the end of the end of last summer, now I have decided, to down size my succulents, and keep the ones I really like. But I have bought some flowering Anthuriums, and I'm really enjoying, the flowers, especially in the cold snowy winter. Plus added some Pretty Aglaonema's, I still have my other plants that I love, I try very hard, to keep my plant numbers to 60 or a bit less. I went through Plant burnout, when I purged all those plants in late summer last year. When those plants were gone, I felt SO much better!
Yup it’s always feels like a huge weight off your shoulders when you edit these plants , and yes a periodic downsize is needed every now and then just like you have done
13:50 - THIS! Minimal care all the way. If I *have* to interact with plants more than once a week then it doesn’t really belong in my home. Do I enjoy walking around most mornings looking at my greenery, yes. Do I have to do it, NO.
I also love to read a lot too. That helps. When I purged my plants last year, I also got inspired to de-clutter in the house, then decluttered, through all the totes in the house, we haven't been able to put the things away, since we need to reno the room's they will go in, that made a huge difference. that felt so good. Now to collect up more things to the thrift store, Can't wait to do that. That's coming next week, it's too cold outside to do that right now, as some of those things are in totes, in sheds outside, from Alberta Canada
Great video as always Ebuka! I used to have 100+ indoor plants and it was stressful not peaceful or relaxing. My collection has been whistled down to @ 80 and it's enjoyable once again. One thing that helped me and made my collection more interesting was to combine 2 like species into the same pot. There are woods behind us and we compost healthy plants and cuttings there so if I'm getting rid of something I don't feel badly because I'm contributing to helping the environment.
U know what 🧐while watching your video , I just got rid of a struggling Pink Princess plant that I had for a couple of years ✔️ and I do have another that is perfectly healthy & a Micky Mouse that should been gone.Thank U I just needed to hear this !!
Great advice. I wish I could get 10 plants for 100 dollars where I live, but I am not buying plants anyway right now. Purging right now but, I'll always have a jungle. Also, I have broken down and bought a systemic. I am already feeling some relief with the amount and quality of my collection. With love to you from NJ USA.
Oops maybe in the clearance section ? 🤭🤭 I’m so glad you got the systemic ! I’m sure it will make such a massive difference! An indoor jungle is not for me . It’s just too much work omg . Thanks for always watching
Spinking my soil with boric acid really helped me. I know it's advertised for roaches but trust me, my plant trive after using it at the first sign of pests. I also use a few drops of tea tree oil in water when I initially bring plants home. That usually stops anything before it starts.
For me it wasn't houseplants but it was gardeningnjn general, our grown kid opened the gate at night and cows and donkeys came in and had a party with our young guavas and pomegranate trees, and anything they found edible. I was so demoralised and gave away a bunch of some of the potted ones.
I'm soooo sorry. I can sense the feeling of defeat. Awe... this might be the opportunity you needed to reset and try gardening a different variety of plants. ❤
You speaking the truth. I have an indoor jungle of 30 plants. That’s my enjoyable number. YES, I used Systemic. My jungle is named Junegle. No bugs. Occasionally spring gnats. Gnats have a short life span once they enter The Junegle. Three times a year I used systemics. I lined my terracotta pots with coco liners and it works. 🪴Happy Planting🌿
In your pest-free section, you mentioned snake plants. 🤔 SNAKE 🐍 plants?!? 😒 The Mealybug Consortium seems to have missed the memo on topic, & have repeatedly taken an Express train to my snake plants!! I’m so TIRED of finding these lil blobs of cotton popping up in the cracks & crevices of my babies!! 😩
When I do throw away my plants or cuttings I break them and pull all the leaves and stems so that there is no way to "save" them and cover them quickly with whatever garbage happens to be in the bin! 😅
This should be compulsory viewing for every plant parent - just my opinion...!

omg, all of it is sooo TRUE! Thank you!
I will never lose interest in plants however sometimes I hate the tasks and maintenance.
I needed to hear all this. Thank you. Truly

You go !!! I hope this helps you focus on the plants you love ❤️
I wish I saw a video like this at the beginning of my plant journey. Great points ❤
Me too, I wish I had! Hopefully, this will help others. But it’s not too late to apply these measures now

I edited some plants just this morning I threw them in the bin it felt cleansing, I have also moved on and I am moving on most of my Philodendrons

Absolutely 💯 If you don’t like the plant get rid of it!! This was hard for me to do but it does lift a weight

yes! I've given some away, tossed some. Life is too short to be stressed out by plants!
So true! 👏👏👏
I do like my drought tolerant plants to be honest for that reason, another brilliant video Ebuka

This video is spot on.

I’m sure you felt so liberated!!
Ok when you told me to get another hobby that hurt 😅
But you’re right baba (as always)
It stings a little but it will greatly help !

Great show by the way, Thank you NO Jungle here! I don't like that look at all
It’s definitely not for everyone ! Thanks for watching
I started shaking my head no at @1:42 😂😂😂😂 “no babes”
😂😂
Oh I do love your content…. Mwah! Please become more famous so you can come the U.S. and slap some sense into all of us.
For me it wasn't houseplants but it was gardeningnjn general, our grown kid opened the gate at night and cows and donkeys came in and had a party with our young guavas and pomegranate trees, and anything they found edible. I was so demoralised and gave away a bunch of some of the potted ones.
Omg ! I can just imagine after all your hard work, but perhaps start again ? Start small and keep it that way until you’re ready to expand abit more
I'm soooo sorry. I can sense the feeling of defeat. Awe... this might be the opportunity you needed to reset and try gardening a different variety of plants. ❤

You seem to have cracked the code !!! Love it 👏👏
composting plants that aren’t diseased is a good option
Great tips as always! 😊
Glad you like them!
Oh I've got other hobbies fasho
Writing, wig making, up cycling clothes etc and gardening
Yaasss!! A well rounded queen . Love to see it
💚
You need to hire the man from the roadside nursery - that helped you at your home, in your recent video - for part time plant help. 😊
Oh I actually have . He comes twice a month to help with the garden or like heavy lifting stuff 😀
Ebuka, if a plant is toxic to pets can you put it into the compost bin for use as a soil amenity for vegetables later? I have wondered about this.
Ebuka you're are a wine or maybe chocolate
Thanks for the advice en spot on
You are more than welcome 🤗
Lately I’ve been gifting special plants to special people. I’m lucky to have special people. 🤗 love ya!
Babes get a systemic and douse that snake plant in it! All your plants if necessary
When I do throw away my plants or cuttings I break them and pull all the leaves and stems so that there is no way to "save" them and cover them quickly with whatever garbage happens to be in the bin! 😅
Loool 😂😂. So you don’t get tempted to rush back and try to save them .
@TheMillennialPlantDad exactly!! 😁
People are just buying way too many!! Doesn’t the younger generations have any self control? Apparently not, smh.
GET OTHER HOBBIES 🤣
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO, it really helped me!!! Also love your vibe🫶🫶
