Dear Ash, This is the most inspiring cricket interview I have heard in my life. I am a 57 yr old who hung up his cricketing boots at 50 (in California). The injustice done to Mr. Badrinath brought tears to my eyes - the interview was never maudlin but the passion came through. I Love both Badri Bhai and Bala Bhai.Two great cricketers of TN who should have played more international matches for India.
One of the top quality interviews, Ash. What I admire in you, in this entire series, is that you prove that you have two ears and only one mouth. A small suggestion is that if the entire episode goes on a serious topics and subjects, the viewers tend to slant at the back of the seats. If you could pose questions to the guests to share some of the interesting moments they came through in their professional careers, it would be still interesting.

The things that comes to my mind when I see the name 'Balaji' are: Broken stumps, long sixes in death overs, terrific swing bowling.

I agree with Sir Balaji, the all other districts should be groomed, I am learned my cricket in Mumbai however I have noticed some good talents in Tirunelveli district. Infrastructure is good but need good management! Real talents should be given opportunity and groomed.

Wow! What a great episode. It is a tragedy that Badri was born in the era of such a strong Indian middle order. In any other era, he would have been a mainstay of Indian batting. Hope India uses his insights at least as coach or selector.

I wanna add something to what these wonderful human beings already said. I think for any sport, it all comes down to playing the role that the sport warrants. For example, an emotional Centre Back in football is a recipe for failure. WRG to cricket the essence lies in how stoic the group is. (just an opinion without any conclusive evidence) When I say stoic, making judgements on the field with minimal emotional quotient. I know that is hard (after all there's only one Dhoni). But the phenomenon can be taught from young age to an extent. I'm not saying we need 1000s of Dhonis. But he has given us an architypical phenomenon to how to approach this wonderful game. Don't approach it emotionally. One might argue Kohli is emotional. I think he's most emotional when he doesn't have the bat in his hand. It's a big difference.
The point about building a process (culture) over time is so important and not just in cricket. If we invest in building the correct processes it will be the culmination of knowledge and expertise of so many people pouring into a system that will enable future players to blossom. Right now we look at systems only as roadblocks to success, something you have to overcome rather than them being agents (catalysts) for success.

3 years late but I'll still say this -
7:00 Badri talks about Coach Abdul Jabbar. He was my coach until I finished school and went out of Chennai.
I'm a 6ft tall fast bowler. And I always used to bowl with new ball.
He gave the same advice - "You don't need to bowl 6 different balls to get the batsman out. Bowl 2 balls but be the best at it"
And the No.1 example he used to say to us bowlers was L.Balaji and how he bowled day after day for India in Test matches.
The coach passed away sometime ago. But it is no surprise that the previous generation of TN cricketers all turned out to be Legends. Lakhs of people play cricket and not everyone will become a pro, but there are gems like Badri and Balaji (and Ash ofc) who are standout examples of what a young cricketer should aspire to be.

More than formula this episode clearly explains the secret of success. I am a firm believer that you have to pass on your tradition to the next generation. I somehow feel it is missing in Tamilnadu cricket. We are short with Mentoring but too much into Coaching. As a player you have to make Cricket as your daily habits, otherwise there is less chance for anyone to succeed. As rightly said if you are not trained to do something, how will you do?????. Good Luck and believe our Tamilnadu team will get us the Ranji Trophy.
