    As someone from the Northeast, Conrail was Our Railroad. It was based here, served us well and was the true inheritor of the fabled Pennsy's history. From the red class lights on the EMD locomotives in this video to the signal bridges and position light signals and even the color of ballast used, Conrail kept the Pennsy alive. Conrail was a friendly and busy railroad and is sorely missed in this era of Precision Scheduled Railroading downsizing and motive power/ signal conformity and boredom. Long Live Big Blue. Conrail is not really a "fallen flag". It was created by government in 1976 (to operate the failed, bankrupt - though essential - Penn Central), and was never meant to be an ongoing entity in perpetuity like a typical business. It was operated by the govt in hope it would someday be profitable, enough so that it could go back to private hands. In just 20 years, that's what happened, as both CSX and NS both bid for a now-very profitable Conrail. As a compromise, Conrail was split between the two roads in the late 1990s. A success story born from an epic failure.

    • @Railfandepot
      @Railfandepot  Год назад

      I consider it a fallen flag in the sense that as a common carrier, mainline railroad - it no longer exists. Yes, it was owned by the government and it fulfilled its mission - but it was still a railroad. And, actually, it is *still* a railroad. A tiny part of Conrail still exists as a co-owned (CSX/NS) switching road in the congested Philly area. Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
