I'm from Singapore and frankly I'm appalled by how weak the yen has become. It used to be 100yen = SGD1.22. now it's 100yen = S$0.86. I genuinely worry for the Japanese, for I love and admire your people and culture. Yes, we Singaporeans have been flocking to Japan as tourists because of the weak yen. Please forgive the tourist crowds. Please know that when I go to Japan, I do my best to spend as much as I can. Hopefully it will help your economy in some way.

I like the first guy's attitude. "I compare myself to the way I was in the past, not to other people now." I think he is a care worker in an old people's home. "A welfare job" doesn't really tell us anything. Saving money for the future is always a good idea but investing it is better. Otherwise inflation will devalue your savings. I have been living in Japan for over 20 years now. It is a safe place and the people are very kind. The government has always had the strategy of devaluing the yen to make Japanese products cheaper overseas. But this leads to inflation in food and energy prices in Japan. Housing prices have stayed relatively low because the population is declining.

I agree with you, this broken monetary system is the problem, we have been fed this lie that goverments are the solution to everything when in fact the money manipulation is how they slowly syphon our productivity. Dont you find it odd that humanity is gaining productivity and making production cheaper yet the cost of living just keep rising? Just get bitcoin and escape this great scam that is the FIAT monetary system, where the rich get richer by printing money, while the small folks work all day for a fixed income that will just get debased at the end.

For me, speaking Japanese is not too hard, the phonetic is better to pronounce, compared to Chinese, but the Japanese Kanji, hiragana, all that, I worry, would make big problems. I saw a RUclipsr who bought a Akyia house in Niigata prefecture, for 6000$, and that's really great, even through on top renovation costs. In Germany, you don't get a family house with a garden, below 300.000€, so basically, if you don't have a family who already owns a house, you might never be able to afford a house, if you are not a doctor or lawyer.
So Japan is for me attractive in this way, on top, with my small business I can work remotely and don't would need to worry about a work in Japan.

Japan is a rich country with high living standards, trust me I've been to Japan and other countries. Their high living standards are the double edge sword.

    •  5 дней назад

it WAS a rich country between the 70s and 90s. Since that, salaries not or barely went higher, but the yean is steadily collapsing.
Also the living standard of the japanese is just purely show off. Their apartments are shoeboxes, they eat most of times very cheap food, often bentos and cupramens. The top 20% spends money like crazy and the other 80% trying to look like that on the surface too, but never will be even similar. I know, i live in Japan, and i saw, how it is going

The yen lost about 25% of its value within the last 3 years, and its going downwards. The salaries same, but prices became higher. Its actually worse, than half of european countries, and propably about same of US countries aswell. So its a mid tier country, disguised as a top tier one.

When I visit Japan, I don’t frequent the restaurants that much. We rent a place with an efficiency kitchen and shop at the grocery store. Some things seem way overpriced but other things seem reasonable. We don’t eat much so we don’t spend a lot. We are not too big on tourist places but prefer the quiet of the countryside. Yes sometimes I go to big cities, mostly to shop at hardware stores. Japanese tools are better than the American equivalent. Of course I have my foreign “vices” so I always hunt for boba shops. Oftentimes we travel during typhoon season because tickets are cheaper. We also make excursions to Okinawa, or maybe Yakushima. If needed we get the JR pass but it isn’t as good as it used to be. We seldom rent a car because it is scary to drive on the other side of road. Sometimes I take my bike, but due to my age, I limit my riding to less than 100 km in a day. In Okinawa my favorites are Shikwasa, Beni imo, chinsuko, and a small fish called Gurukun. Okinawan soba is hard to beat. I like the Haari boat race or paddling the Sabani. The mangroves on Iriomote are wonderful.

America has tons of resources, most of the world's top companies, top universities, access to global talent through immigration, they have endless amounts of capital (literally can print the world's reserve currency out of thin air) and risk taking/entrepreneurial spirit that's unmatched. So comparing any country's salary to America is a losing game.
Japan's largest company is Toyota at 46th. They are forced to import basic necessities like fuel and food. They have basically no immigration. They can't even stimulate the economy with negative interest rates meanwhile debt to GDP is ballooning. For all their disadvantages Japan actually has decent salaries and standard of living.

In all honesty, we are also 'feeling poor' in the west too. It's all relative, due to cost of living. But when we can come to Japan (if the flight isn't too expensive) we can let our money go a little further. But Japan has something that the western countries don't have - social order. So even if you feel poor in Japan, just be glad you don't have to worry about physical safety every day as well.

I've seen the prices in Japan and cannot imagine how someone can live on 60K yen per month. He probably doesn't pay rent but even so... Most likely he keeps it for himself rather than complaining. Japan's culture, respect.

Because you are thinking at that as a tourist POV.
But, try to live in Japan as a resident and the "price in Japan lower than country X" vision will not be so different as the tourist perspective. I think it is a mistake most people do, probably because they don't know the real difference of prices until they experience it by actually living in there.
So, in short you are right to say it's lower if you think it as a tourist and compare it with USD > JPY actual currency exchange.
If you think it as a potential foreign resident in Japan...well...it's quiet different😅
Nothing personal, just my personal opinion.

To be a great construction site supervisor you need to have experience in actually building, once you have constructed for many years and perfected your craft, then you can be a supervisor and know if someone is constructing something right or wrong and tell them how to build it right. Just reading and not actually doing it won't make you a great construction site supervisor. Everyone wants to start from the top and be a manager without paying their dues and proving themselves to be a BAMF.

60,000 yen per month is only about A$600 a month. That is ridiculous and must be wrong (we don't speak Japanese - did he actually say 600,000 yen?).
Economics 101: A weak currency is actually a boon for the economy and should be sought (excepting for local travellers going offshore). A cheap currency makes your goods and services more affordable and therefore in greater demand (think cars, motorbikes, electronics etc). And, overseas travellers will flock to lower currency countries because they are good value. NOTE THAT JAPAN ONLY CAME OUT OF ITS 50-YEAR ECONOMIC QUAGMIRE ONCE IT ALLOWED THE YEN TO DEVALUE AND OPENED THE BORDERS TO MORE FOREIGN TOURISTS WITH EASIER VISA ARRANGEMENTS (who are now coming in droves). Tourists and their large spending traits are always a massive boon to any economy and should be actively sought (think Bali and Hawaii).
Population: Any country with a relatively large population in comparison to land mass and resources will face ongoing diminishing wage and standard-of-living pressures. Why? Because there is plenty of labour (and in Japan skilled and educated labour) and simple supply/demand says that you can source it cheaper.

I often watch some Japanese independent media videos. I have noticed that they frequently mention China, and the most common topics are about the collapse of the Chinese economy, the collapse of the Chinese government, and similar subjects. When a large amount of such content appears, it can only prove that they seem to really hope for these things to happen. Such independent media also often appear in English, or for example, in Filipino (I guess). However, it doesn't seem like these things are happening.
Additionally, there are topics about war. I also often see Japanese people discussing the war between Russia and Ukraine. They frequently mention that Russia is on the verge of defeat. Russian casualties far exceed those of Ukraine. Western weapons have an overwhelming advantage over Russia, and so on.
I think this reflects how Japanese people understand the world. They hope and believe this is the case. When an entire nation's people misunderstand what is happening in the world in such a way, the country will keep making mistakes.

As long as Japan continues to be extremely pro-American, it will become poorer day by day. The era of prosperity through being pro-American has passed. If you look at what has happened to the most pro-American countries in recent years, you will understand: Japan, the UK, Germany, Canada, etc. These countries are still wealthy, no doubt, but have you noticed that they are becoming increasingly mediocre? This is because these countries are sacrificing themselves to maintain the global status of the United States. The industrial strength of the entire G7 group is rapidly declining. In fact, they have already lost to emerging countries led by China, such as China + Russia + Brazil + the entire Southeast Asia. I'm talking about industrial productivity, not financial strength.
Since I started to understand the world, Japan was undoubtedly the richest country in Asia. But today, Japanese salaries are significantly lower than those in Hong Kong and Singapore. Not just slightly, but significantly lower. Japan, which used to have double the salaries of Taiwan, is now almost on par with Taiwan. What has happened in the past decade? It's because their excessive pro-American stance has caused them to miss opportunities and chances to collaborate with China to create greater wealth. Meanwhile, Southeast Asia, by choosing a relatively neutral position, has reaped the greatest benefits. The economic strength of the entire Southeast Asia has surpassed Japan. Compared to China, Japan went from being larger than China to now only a quarter of its size. However, I don't think the Japanese will change their national strategy. Therefore, the future outlook for Japan is certainly negative, and I believe Japan will experience a rapid decline in the next ten years, not a slow one.
