I've been trying to socialize my first feral, a 4 year old adult female. I've been at it for about a month and still had not touched her with my hand. Then yesterday afternoon I came across this video. I immediately put your "lessons" into practice with Murphy and tonight I can pet her with my gloved hand! She leans her head into my hand so I can scratch her ears and raises her head so I can scratch her chinny, chin, chin! I cannot tell you how happy I feel and more importantly, how relaxed and peaceful and at ease my little girl is! I am so grateful! Thank you and little Dormouse so very much for the lessons. I'm a fan for life.
I adopted a scared Siamese last year but I live alone so she hates everyone else. However, when everyone is gone she sleeps right by me and talks about everything that happened when I was gone.
"talks about"... Haha! I've heard Siamese are vocal. I suspected my first cat could have been part Siamese because of his face structure and because he was very talkative. :-)
I became a rescue a few months back. A few weeks back I ended up with a litter of 3 feral 6 month old kittens. These videos have been extremely helpful! So glad they are still up after so many years. Thank you for sharing! Truly appreciate it
I have been watching your videos for about a week. Although I am only allowed to have one pet in my apartment, I am finding Kitten Training very useful. You have a very calm speaking voice that is very engaging. Your sense of humor and the gentle but firm way you handle all the feral kitties is delightful.
I am so glad! That is why I do these videos, so we can share our successes and challenges with cat lovers all over. Appreciate your comment! Keep Purring **Caroline
Hi Vicki! My "social box" is a wire cage made for guinea pigs or rabbits. It folds up when not in use and is easy to clean, and is big enough for a small litter box and food/water bowls. You can find these at any pet store. **Caroline
I am so glad!!! That's why I do these videos. There are so many things I have learned from other people who work with cats and I am still learning new things every day. Thanks for volunteering with your shelter! **Caroline
Thank you so much for the social box tip!! I'm dealing with a very afraid cat and she won't move from her hiding place, still "attacking" me when I reach out to her, I think this tip will really help us build trust
I am so glad to hear it Leo! I find it almost impossible to tame a kitty when they are allowed to hide under furniture or in the back of a closet. This technique has worked for me time and time again. Good luck and keep us posted!
I have the exact same cage you have that was bought at a garage sale. The litter box is on the other side though and the one that has the stairs is lowered more. I took your video and put the set up the same. Thanks for that.
Cats come with a natural borderline "disorder". Treat them with unconditional affection in their formative years, and they are yours forever. Be inconsistent, and you lose the game.
Would you consider posting a typical schedule for the first 2-3 days of receiving a feral kitten like Dormouse? Would be great to get a sense of how much time they're spending per day in the social box, and what to look out for before attempting to lift/cuddle as you do later in the video (I can't possibly consider lifting my new feral kittens, they just scratch and freak out).
Such a little cutey! Love the social box concept. I had a cat Ozzy that was a real wild man and he could have really used a social box! He was a full size 4 year old fur ball of fury, we didn't use gloves with him because they would have done no justice at all. We had to be stern with him because he was a total alpha cat. Even after he calmed down you still had to let him do his thing. If he wanted food he would jump up on the counter, then we would feed him. If he wanted pets we would wait till he sat on our lap and head bumped us. It took a good 6 months before you could just pick him up and hug him. He lived with my family for 10 years and was a great friend. We believe he was on the streets for at least a year before the shelter got him. My dad chose him because he was such a fighter but purred when he battled him (without gloves agsinst the shelter's suggestion) out of the cage and held him for 10 minutes. My dad said the gloves showed fear and he wasn't having that! A kitten that doesn't know human interaction is one thing, this was like trying to grab a neglected wolverine! The sounds he made were terrifying enough.
I actually tamed my cat a different way. Everyday the cat would follow my male cat to my house and we would feed her treats, soon we lead the cat into my my house using food, after maybe 2 or 3 hours it got used to us and trusted us. Cats are smart eh. 😺
Thanks Emislegend! I like the name too. But it has been so funny because the moniker has created so much emotion in the comments. People either love it or they HATE it! Thanks for the comment.
Hey Sharon I just subscribed to your channel...I absolutely love orchids and it looks like you might know a thing or two about them! We have about 15 phals on our porch now all growing pvery well, just need a few cool days to get 'em to spike :)
I'm caring for a mom and 2 kittens that live under my shed, I'm working with them every day to get them used to me, they're super spoiled now and eat twice a day lol I've always loved cats and have cared for many strays, but this little family has a special place in my heart because they were born in my backyard and literally live back there 24/7 ( I'm not sure about at night though it makes me worried thinking what they could be be doing, wandering my neighborhood) I'm also going to build them a house just for an extra bit of shelter, though they really do love it under my shed lol, I'm gonna try to start playing with the babies to get them more comfortable and associate me with positive things I have an empty apartment downstairs that's furnished, hopefully they'll follow me inside at some point and hang out
These kitties are so lucky to have someone like you! And since you have known the kittens since they were born they'll be your best friends. If possible, try to get them (and Mom once she's weaned the kittens) fixed. That way you won't have a population explosion of cats in your yard once the kittens grow to sexual maturity in about 7 months. There are usually low-cost spay neuter clinics in most towns, and many places have "trap, neuter/spay, release" programs where you can have them fixed for free. Good luck with your little family and thanks for commenting! **Caroline
Hi i realize this is an older video but, a feral kitten has occupied my garage as it's home. We feed our indoor/outdoor older male kitty Midnight in our laundry room adjacent to the garage and typically leave the door open between the rooms so, the kitty could cleanup after Midnight leaves the laundry. We have recently put a litter box, water and food bowls out by the shelves where the kitten is hanging out to encourage it to adopt us. He/she will look at us for a couple of seconds when we enter the garage but, skitters behind the shelves if we approach too closely. I'm looking for next steps. I don't want to scare it to death by moving the shelving around to catch it; I guess I get a trap and capture it and take it to the vet for shots/neuter and then try to socialize it using your techniques? Any low traumatizing suggestions would be appreciated before I get a trap. Thanks
How long does it take to tame a wild cat? because I rescued a cat a month ago and it has been difficult to gain her trust. one day she seems to be fine with my presence, the next day is almost like I have to start again. I've seen progress, but it's hard. I just want to make her feel safe. Any advice?
PLEASE HELP :( ....My new kitten doesn’t like being petted much (8weeks old) should I just force the petting on him like you had to do for door mouse or am I suppose to wait till the kitten eventually approaches me for cuddles? (I’ve had him for 5 days so far and he is eating/playing well and not hiding) I really would like to train him to love cuddle and petting
OMG I need you lady! I have a female outdoor cat. I've had Fiona for a year. She is feral or turned feral out of necessity of possibly being abandoned. After a year of feeding and talking to her ( never tried to pet her during the entire year) and then she let me pet her after a year. Long story she got picked up by animal control and when I finally found her I decided to have her spayed. I'm going to get her later today and she'll be recovering with me in a quiet area. Hi, I am in love with videos on your channel. I have two questions: 1. I have a female cat born to a feral cat, so she was reluctant about human touch but slowly she started sitting beside me and sleeping with me. Then I decided to get her spayed. After spaying, her behavior changed slowly, it changed specially after I started relieving her when she used to get in heat. She now just comes home to eat and doesn't allow me to pet her much, she constantly hisses and tries to bite if I try to pick her up or pet her near going to her hind region. 2. Her mother was completely feral, I socialised her gradually and she trusted me enough to deliver her kittens at my home. but she still hisses some times when I approach for petting her from her eye side. Would love to get inputs from you. :-) Thank you so much! :-)
I don't have anything I could use as a social box and I live in a country where I can get something. I'm not sure how I can socialize my new little guy.
We caught a wild scared cat...looks to be around 6 months old...she let us pet her in the cage, she got out of the cage, when husband went to grab/pick her up she hissed and scratched, we're going to let her go, we put the have a hart in the room she's in as i opened the cage to let her roam, after we catch her, we're going to let her go and just feed her outside, i wanted to stop the baby machine but idk....
Any tips on doing this with pairs? I have a couple of sisters and one is super social, and the other one is still scared as ever. Is it alright to leave the scared one in the social box while the other one runs around? Would that be weird?
Hannah Barton Yes. Yes it does. Might take longer, get a few scars, but it works. This, and feeding a tom cat over 3 months in the wild works too......from feeding from just seeing him to getting him slowly closer before putting food down.....then "accidentally" lightly touching his tail before leaving......he will suddenly like it and want MAWR! Sandy went from scared kitty when trapped to affectionate in a week. I even let him free.....and after 3 days he came back for pets and food.....and never left.
Hey there, are the kittens close to your home, like in your garage? If so, you can start to gently touch them although I wouldn't pick them up for another week or so unless you have to move them or anything. Also don't do anything to stress the mom or she could abandon them, although I have had some feral moms who don't seem to mind if you touch the kittens as long as you leave HER alone. Age does affect the socialization process, so when the kittens are a little older (eyes open, starting to roam a bit from the nest) then you should gently handle them so they get used to humans. After 4-5 weeks if the kittens havent been handled they tend to be very fearful, although you can still tame them. Thanks for the comment and Keep me posted, ok?
There is a stray cat were I live and I give it food every night because in the morning he goes hide and it is 107 degrees and he won’t come out at all but he kinda trust me
Keep trying Sophia! It can take a while to gain their trust, but you giving the kitty food will go a long way. Thanks for being so kind to a cat in need!
I bought a kitty at a pet store she is a girl but I'm having a lil bit a trouble I have been able to introduce her to the family by that I mean my husband and toby my 🐈 my CT gets a long great they play and run around but the kitty doesn't warm up to my husband and I will play with kitty toys and she is receptive but runs away when we try to pet her, when we do hold her it's only for a quick second then she bolts
I think your kitty just needs more time! It's a big change for a little girl to come into a new house with lots of people. Just try playing with her one on one for a while, such as take her into a room for some gentle, quiet play time. Then your husband can do the same. She'll realize that you and your family are HER family after a while. And remember, really good treats are the best tool you can have with a shy kitty. Get something she really loves, like bits of tuna or cheese. The dry treats are not yummy enough!
Yes, he was absolutely terrified of people when I first got him from the shelter. I don't know his full backstory but apparently he was running around wild on the street and someone caught him. He'c come such a long way since this video was shot, and now hops up on the sofa if you are sitting on it and wants to cuddle. He still runs if you walk towards him but he really wants to be near people. Thanks for watching!
My cat just giving birth 2 month ago in a hut near my home.i just see her kitten playing but when i show up they running away from me.1 day i manage to caught 1 one them and he's hissing and spitting to me.what should i do to tame them?anyone help me
I think there is some type of inate compatibility between humans and cats. we can't resist their beauty and power, they can't resist our magic touch and delicious food. but when they have their crazy moments they can hurt soooo much, so watch out!
Kitty Condo = Critter Nation cage which is rather expensive... I had one just like that for my pet rats and I just sold it for $50 a couple weeks ago..
A great post! We picked up a one year old Bombay at a shelter. the 1st week, a little timid . Now great! Until today when we went to the vet. Now she is hissing and I think she thinks we betrayed her, in some strange way. We have to go to the vet again next week to her spaded. After that, she will want us killed..... Not sure I understand her, she is one, so I get part of her actions, bit we were pals until today... TK/TB-41066-out.
The cage in that video is considered a rabbit or guinea pig cage. I now have a small dog crate that is about the same width but taller. Remember, the kittens are in them for very short periods of time just for socialization sessions. They live in a much larger cat condo or are loose in my spare bedroom the rest of the time.
Also the Kitty-Condo is a large ferret cage ... nice idea; gives the kitten a sense of safety, but not being too cramped, for his size and age, at the same time ...

He‘s adorable!!! Thank you for loving this little guy...

I've never seen a cat that likes to be petted slightly more roughly lool so cute
Honestly doormouse is my favorite thing right now
I'm really learning a lot of useful things I can implement at the shelter I volunteer 😘

That cat is adorable

Thanks for helping him! He's a sweetheart!
Thanks Alice! Dormouse now has a wonderful home of his own, where he apparently rules the house. **Caroline

now this is some gentle petting
Well done. Keepnup the great work.

Yes they are smart! And very food motivated.
Docalcox, because your cat can talk to the other cat
My two cats don’t want 🐈⬛ the stra in?! They hiss and growl and poor kitty runs out. ;(
Wonderful job! I love his black nose. :p Dormouse is a cute name for a cute kitty.
Thanks Emislegend! I like the name too. But it has been so funny because the moniker has created so much emotion in the comments. People either love it or they HATE it! Thanks for the comment.
I love dormouse!
me too.
0:56 Looks like ol Ernold is really enjoying his new kitten.
Créer la confiance , petit à petit , car c'est la peur qui les rend agressifs , le plus souvent 💗💗💗
I just lost a cat so I’m watching this because I’m getting a new one and want to make sure this one has a longer life
He is adorable!
Thank you Dayna! Appreciate the nice comment. Be sure to see the "update" video about Dormouse done a year after these videos were made!
0:48 The cats face lol, he's plotting the destruction of humanity.
That was very helpful information.

You forgot the link to the social box video :(
Can it be done with an adult feral cat?
Where did you get that kitty condo?
Thank u ur really awesome
Keep up ur good work
Thank you!!! Appreciate the nice comment.

Can you please make a video showing us the kitty condo? The make and Mesurements, a more detailed over view of the set up?
Thank you!
Yes, I will make another video soon showing more detail. Thanks for asking! **Caroline
How long does it take to tame a wild cat? because I rescued a cat a month ago and it has been difficult to gain her trust.
one day she seems to be fine with my presence, the next day is almost like I have to start again.
I've seen progress, but it's hard. I just want to make her feel safe. Any advice?
Try giving her space
so in the instances when you pick him up and he doesn’t want to be picked up. And the cat keeps struggling to not be held?
Pro tip whenever a cat winks at you they trust you
PLEASE HELP :( ....My new kitten doesn’t like being petted much (8weeks old) should I just force the petting on him like you had to do for door mouse or am I suppose to wait till the kitten eventually approaches me for cuddles? I really would like to train him to love cuddle and petting
I'm nervous. Please wish me luck. Thanks for the advice.
Updates,
Hi,
I am in love with videos on your channel.
I have two questions:
Would this work with an adult Tom cat that is not sterilized
Hannah Barton
Yes.
Male cats are somewhat less risky to tame, compared to female counterparts. Esp. those with kittens.
MY CAT RUNS FROM ME AND SCRATCHES ME AND IT SLEEPS UNDER MY STOVE PLEASE HELP
Food is the answer
but aren't you over stimulating the cat, petting it for so long?
Problem is I have 7 6 week old kittens in my barn they will hide but when we catch them they don’t hiss or scratch often
I wanna adopt him
What about playing...will he play with you ?
Oh yes, Dormouse's new family says he LOVES to play!
How do I tame feral kittens when their mother is near them? the mother gave birth to them 2 or 3 weeks ago so I dunno if the age affects the process
Hey there, are the kittens close to your home, like in your garage? If so, you can start to gently touch them although I wouldn't pick them up for another week or so unless you have to move them or anything. Cats mostly breed in our property, we dunno why. Also thanks for the information!

No he was a fox news journalist
Looking at my boy who I adopted at 5 y.o as his third and final owner, he was probably a bit feral :/
i love being covered in kittens
Me TOO!!! It's my favorite blanket.
My cat just giving birth 2 month ago in a hut near my home.i just see her kitten playing but when i show up they running away from me.1 day i manage to caught 1 one them and he's hissing and spitting to me.what should i do to tame them?anyone help me
Why would you name a cat Dormouse?
Hi Mac, Dormouse is a character in "Alice in Wonderland'. I thought it was cute and unusual!
Kitten School Oh, I never saw that movie.
Mac Harper it's a book and several movies actually XD
No one Nowhere Okay, I never heard of it.
Nyan Cat shutup u fool nobody asked for your opinion
I think there is some type of inate compatibility between humans and cats. we can't resist their beauty and power, they can't resist our magic touch and delicious food. but when they have their crazy moments they can hurt soooo much, so watch out!
Yes, even when Dormouse wanted to scratch my eyes out I still loved him! Cats are indeed hypnotic...I'm an admitted addict to their charm and beauty!
Kitty Condo = Critter Nation cage which is rather expensive... I had one just like that for my pet rats and I just sold it for $50 a couple weeks ago..
Cat BigBrother^^
A great post! We picked up a one year old Bombay at a shelter. the 1st week, a little timid . Now great! Until today when we went to the vet. Now she is hissing and I think she thinks we betrayed her, in some strange way. We have to go to the vet again next week to her spaded. After that, she will want us killed..... Not sure I understand her, she is one, so I get part of her actions, bit we were pals until today...
TK/TB-41066-out.
It takes more time for some cats.
Ik hes still not quite tame but why keep him in a cage?
It is...hamster cage?
The cage in that video is considered a rabbit or guinea pig cage. I now have a small dog crate that is about the same width but taller. Remember, the kittens are in them for very short periods of time just for socialization sessions. They live in a much larger cat condo or are loose in my spare bedroom the rest of the time.
That was a joke...
oh sorry I missed your irony. Well, joke all you want but it works.
Also the Kitty-Condo is a large ferret cage ... nice idea; gives the kitten a sense of safety, but not being too cramped, for his size and age, at the same time ...
2018?
The most difficult part of taming wild animals is to trap them in your house. After that it’s easy street no matter how long it takes.

Your cat is in a cage. Where is the videos how to do that?

Dont agree with cat being kept in either of the CAGES, condo or social box, NO DIFFERENCE, cages BAD

cat do not like cages .
I hate bubbly bouncy music
It's not hard to tame a kitten. You should post a video on how to make a sammich, your audience of cat ladies would gain immensely from it.
