  • I thought I would go a bit further away from the North East with this one. Always been facinated with the Blackpool Tower and how it was constructed. How they did it back then the mind boggles. No health and safety back then brave men. Hope you enjoy this little video on its construction. There was lots more info I found but my videos just give the basics hope you enjoy.

Great video again my friend . It's tragic to say that Blackpool that was once described as ' Las Vegas of the North ' has sadly died so much as a seaside resort . I remember going there through work on the last Friday in July about 12 years ago and driving down the main beach front , counting about 20 people in total on a hot scorching day , mid summer .
Back in the 60's and 70's there would have been thousands !!

Thanks Mark I watch videos done in Blackpool and the front is ok but the rest of Blackpool is like a tip. We also went to Morecambe on our family holidays. And that is not what it used to be either. Thanks again for your comment take care

Wow, what a wonderful tribute to "The Tower" . I'm a very lucky person, I went to see the circus every year as a child courtesy of ICI (Fleetwood and Thornton) who took all the employees' children every year. I admit I loved the animals and wondered at the water finale. Charlie Carolli was on every year who along with Norman made us all laugh. The experience of watching the appearance of the Wurlitzer in the Ballroom is, to me, a wonder of the world. Yes, I've seen Reg Dixon, yes, I know how lucky I've been to see some of the best years of The Tower and Blackpool during the hey days of the summer seasons era. Thank you once again for this tribute.

Such an informative video, Colin! My heart went out to those brave workmen who built the Tower. I wonder how many lost their lives or were injured? I used to live in Blackpool. It really is an impressive Victorian achievement! Thanks for the post 👌

Hi Chasidah only one man died in the Construction. They must have been careful back then. Bit like the tyne Bridge only one man died on that too. Its a wonderful construction. Hope you are doing well

@@colinthegeordiehistorian10 - only one fatality? Although a terrible tradgey for the man & his family, that is incredible! All well with me, Colin. Hope you and Carol are doing well.

The photographs @ 2.27 to 2.50 are more likely to be workers undertaking the ongoing maintenance of the tower as seen later in the video rather than construction workers.

A wonderfully insightful posting, lots of historical facts and photographic memorabilia! Thoroughly enjoyed! I was there for a nostalgia visit from Canada in 2018 and 2021. My previous visits were over 53 years ago, but it was as familiar as ever.👍

They decided to dismantle the New Brighton tower over similar concerns about corrosion. That tower was made of low carbon steel I wonder if replacing the steel and a painting regime could have saved that tower. Between 1900 and 1920 they would have been visible to reach other.
