For those that want a similar flavor but don't want to fry the ice cream, try this. In a skillet melt a stick of butter, add 1 tsp cinnamon, pinch of salt, 1 cup crushed corn flakes and 1 cup crushed Graham crackers. Put crumb mixture onto a plate. Take frozen balls of vanilla ice cream and roll them into the crumbs. Top with caramel sauce and fresh whipped cream. Serve immediately.
I had fried ice cream once in a Mexican restaurant, it was delish. I couldn’t wrap my head around “fried ice cream” it just didn’t seem logical to me. When I saw and tasted it my mouth was oh so happy. Thank you for this recipe. I’m saving it and definitely will be making it. Have a great weekend.🤗
My absolute favorite!!! I remember the first time I had it at a Mexican restaurant as a kid and I was like, “Where has this been all my life?!?” I love to add coconut to the mix!
My grandpa introduced fried ice cream to me as a kid, he used to take me to a Mexican restaurant called Tampicos and he would always order it for us for dessert. Miss you pop.
I made this in 2012 for my final exam in culinary school as part of a 3 course me n I got an A+ I love fried ice cream with different flavor coulis like blackberry peach or dragon fruit
A ca-zillion years ago, there was a restaurant chain called Chi-Chi’s. Really good Mexican food. This was their star dessert. Same recipe with corn flakes cinnamon sugar coating. The size was at least double though, about the size of a softball. Their other great dessert was sopapillas served with incredible strawberry sauce with chunks of fresh strawberries. Both were so yummy. I miss that place as they had best fajitas. I can still find their salsa in the grocery store. Thanks for the egg white tip. Makes perfect sense!
I made this (a different recipe) a few years ago and it was a mess because the ice cream melted during the prep. Thanks John for the important detail of chilling the initial balls before rolling them in the egg whites and coating. I'll give it another try. I had them many times at a Mexican restaurant during my college years and they were incredible.
God bless you over and over again. My niece and I are using your recipes and so enjoying ourselves. She loves to bake and is quite good for her age. Will be doing this one tonight
Before the ones near me went out of business I would take my family to my favorite restaurant, Chi-Chi's. I would get my two favorite things on the menu, Chimigangas and Fried ice- cream. I still remember the creamy cinnamon taste. You could either get chocolate or cinnamon flavored sauce poured on top of the ice cream 🍦. Thank you for the recipe and the wonderful memories. You always bring such joy to your tutorials . Thank you for sharing and keep on caking 💜
Made this yesterday for my mom's birthday! It's one of her favorite desserts but the restaurant we used to get it from no longer serves it. She was so surprised, and I'm happy to say it was a huge hit!
We used to make this a lot, so what we did was roll the ice cream in crumbled pound cake and then give it a dip in a batter that would fry up crispy.. A good quality store bought tempura batter mix works fine too if you can't be bothered making one from scratch..
Just would like to say thank you for always having the best recipes. You are my go to guy! I sell alot of baking because of your great taste. Thank you 🍪🥐🍰
I make my "crumb" coating with the corn flakes as a base, but, depending on how I feel, or the ice cream itself, I also add crushed vanilla wafers, crushed animal crackers ( with or without that pink icing)..Trix, Fruit loops..all kinds of stuff..
Glad he said any spice. The only reason I'm looking into how to make fried ice cream myself is because everywhere makes it with cinnamon and I'm allergic.
Mm just made some with dairy free vanilla bean ice cream! Made with coconut milk And used gluten free coco pebbles with cinnamon and brown sugar! Organic dairy free chocolate sauce to top it off! Was amazing!

OMG, I haven't seen Fried Ice Cream on a menu since 1986-1987 when I lived with friends in Little Rock. A local Mexican restaurant had it as a dessert offering. I ordered it once and was hooked.. Kept suggesting to my friends we go back regularly for dinner and would go in at times just for the fried Ice Cream. I've never seen it offered again at any restaurants I've gone to, and I've looked. I seem to remember them drizzling honey across the disk like you did the chocolate.
