    An example of why DRS SUCKS. Both cars came at the corner/chicane at the same speed and they rely on their bracking and cornering habilities to gain or defend a posittion, now it's all about to press a damn button and pass the other car on a straight line

    The old Hockenheim circuit was unique, for sure; that's what made it great. It probably wasn't much of a challenge to drive (except for the stadium section, that must have been fun with the low downforce settings), but it often produced good races, because one could pass almost anywhere on the track. It was definitely more a spectator's track than a driver's track- and other than maybe Monza there wasn't any other track like that on the F1 calendar. I really do miss the old layout; I think if it was to be restored with better spectator facilities than it had in 2001 (particularly in the forest straights, apparently there were no restrooms for spectators out there), F1 today could race there.

    • @singleturbosupra7951

      +hmdwgf Some modifications to track layout would probably be okay, as long as the ostkurve was still there. And as long as the old layout was still possible to be used for trackdays. And the forest not cut down too much. Imo the forest added to the characteristics of this track as well

    People bitch about the new DRS and KERS being needed, and that they make being a driver easy. The car's nowadays don't have 950hp, and the teams engines are much closer in power output than they were during the V10 era. The V10's had varying levels of power, and today's engines are for the most part all roughly the same power. In addition, all the little winglets and aero appendages that these cars have are banned, and forcing teams to regain the downforce by making the wing's angle more aggressive. Simply put, if you think it's boring watching modern F1, try to imagine it without KERS or DRS, and with nothing in their place. I'm sorry, but there's not enough passing as it is.

      @TheColinChapman 6 лет назад +9

      karelpipa no. regarding fuel consumption, the old Hockenheim circuit had been similar to Monza (engines are running under full load for 73 to 75 percent of the lap time). Most teams do not use the entire fuel tank capacity of 100 litres, most teams only use 96 to 98 litres of it. The reason is that most of the time the cars are using the longest gear, which is good regarding fuel consumption. the tracks that are critical regarding fuel consumption are circuits like Montreal - a lot of full-load-accelerating out of medium-speed-corners. Modern F1 cars would not have to lift-and-coast on the old Hockenheim layout (if it still existed).

    After quite a bit of reading I can't seem to find out why the track owners decided to dismantle the old layout after introducing the new one... surely that takes time and effort? Wouldn't simply blocking it off have been simpler and less expensive? Not to mention it would have left open the option of perhaps re-using it in the future. Now it's pretty much gone forever. Very sad.

      ***** That wasn't the main reason. That was a contributing factor, but the main reason was that the track was not good for spectators and it's facilities were lacking to others. There were hardly any access roads, and over at the OstKurve, there were no bathrooms for spectators, and security was often an issue- some crazy ex-Mercedes employee got onto the track during the 2000 race thanks to him nagivating his way through the forest there, which didn't have any good security measures from stopping people from getting onto the track.

    der alte Ring war der Hammer! die geilste F1 high speed Strecke..selbst zwar erst 93 geboren, - aber auch dieser Kurs - unvergessen :) ..etliche Runden dort auf Playstation1+ Formula1 96/97 gedreht >:D

    I just watched the sundays race and after I started to look for videos with old track and with monopost with some sound. It was really good race on sunday, but this sounds so much better and the old track is just great!

    This is what F1 really look like.. There's no need for DRS. It just the engine. More fair.

    Way too many things missing here...The old Hockenheimring, the sound of those brilliant sounding engines, events with many people.

    I love it when people say "This is what F1 used to be"... lol... they were concentrating on a battle for 9th place people.... during a time when Ferrari would dominate, they won 15 out of 19 races that year... You see the same battles today, F1 isn't any worse than it's ever been, the racing is actually good and the qualifying times from 3rd to last place are crazy close during a normal weekend...

      Yeah, you see the same battles today... except with garbage like DRS, ugly cars and engines that sound like a vacuum cleaner.
