- democracynow.org - Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing new criticism after she struggled in a recent “60 Minutes” interview to explain why schools in her home state of Michigan are faring poorly under the policies she has championed. DeVos is a billionaire Republican activist and the sister of Blackwater founder Erik Prince. She once served as chair of the American Federation for Children in Michigan, where she promoted school choice and worked to expand the state’s use of private charter schools. Many educators say the results of DeVos’s policies in Michigan have been disastrous. For more, we speak with Allie Gross, a reporter with the Detroit Free Press. She covered education in Michigan as a freelance reporter and was a Teach for America teacher in a Detroit charter school.

Easy, when you're rich and those who are not are not people to you, it's very easy. She is not the first, nor will she be the last. Sickening. And teachers with guns instead of just passing laws to make sure that crazies can't buy them? Shocking that people are even considering this. Why is this not the breaking point where most people say, it is time that WE stopped this and do something about it? Where are the parents who have children who go to these schools? Where is their outrage?

She is working on privatizing education. If you want to know it affects children, look to African & South America systems. The cost is prohibitive. Also, there have been many charter school who have gone belly up mid year. They aren't managed properly.
For-profit colleges didn't pan out very well, why does she think it'll be any better with For-profit high schools and elementary schools?

I know exactly why Betsy Devos is saying that we need to put focus on the students. Because her plan to privatizing public schools Does exactly that. Charter schools get a dollar amount for every kid that they can prove shows up to their school and it doesn’t matter if the kid learns anything or if the kid cuts class an hour after attendance or if the kid doesn’t show up on days where attendance is not counted towards funding, as long is the charter schools can get that dollar amount for that student they are happy their job is done and they’ll cut any cost they can just like so that they can keep the majority of that money and not invest it into schools or students.

Funding schools needs to go to distributing taxes evenly throughout school systems instead of allowing rich neighborhoods to have “good” schools while poorer neighborhoods have poorly funded schools. This system is despicable and the DeVos Oligarchical system makes it even worse.

story is the daily challenge of so many teachers. Too often superintendents last a few years then take hundreds of thousands of dollars in separation agreements. And it sounds so trivial to complain about a lack of supplies but it impacts and frustrates students and teachers to not be supported in their important job. Sadly the education system lost you... it happens to so many. But I’ll watch for your voice to champion the educators who stay in such a compromised system.
We must provide a comprehensive education for every child starting with preschool. While charter and religious schools have their place we are obligated to meet the challenges to educate ALL people to strengthen our whole society.
We saw this past weekend, Jan. 2022 , in the now deleted posting on the Michigan Democrat party website how out of touch and delusional the Democrat party has become in regards to the tax payer funded public school system. If defunding the Police is a viable action for society how much more viable is defunding the public school becoming as a tool to affect an outcome that parents and taxpayers demand? If parents and taxpayers are going to be treated like this by Democrats and by the teachers unions that control them, then its time for student to progress beyond the public school system and parents given the right to place their children in a parochial or private school of their choice and have all the tax funds follow the student.
We should privatize all education in the US, let parents decide where to send their kids to school.
