  • Zurich’s Polyban opened as a water-balanced funicular in 1886. It is a convenient link between Central tram interchange and the Polytechnic-University area in the very centre of Zurich. Although no longer a serious money-making operation (the route is duplicated by two tram routes) in 1972 a society was formed to preserve the line for cultural reasons, and in 1976 the USB Bank came to the rescue and bought the line, which now bears its name.
The railway was completely rebuilt as a fully automatic cable funicular in 1996, and it is part of Zurich’s integrated public transport ticketing system.
