This is one of the most practical comparison between 8g vs 16g ram for Mac mini. 1080p with several tracks, commonly used in daily basis. Big and clear numbers on screen! Thanks for making it so simple!
Thanks. I'm about to buy the 16GB Mini and this clarifies that I wont gain much editing 1080p footage but will mainly appreciate the multitasking performance. Most other comparisons seem to be based on 4 and 8K footage, which is fair enough, but doesn't reflect what I will use most of the time editing video.
Very clear and relatable. Well, I've bought the M2 version two days before and wait for delivery. I don't think to make a mistake, but the difference is soooo small... but it's ok for me. I'm on Windows since the 90th - this will be my first Apple..... 😵💫
Thanks. Super useful. But about "future proofing," I've got burned doing that building my Windows PCs. You have to think of the whole system. In 3 years there will probably be an M4 that runs 400% faster than the M1. So you'll sell your 8GB M1 and buy a whatever-GB M4. My worry is about having too many tabs open in Safari. When I get my 8GB Mini in a couple of days, that's the first thing I'm going to try. If I can't have 25 tabs open, I'll take it back and get the 16.
Thanks for the comparison test. It made it obvious that a doofus like me that just watches RUclips videos and needs a computer for word processing and email can save $200 by sticking with the base model.

Take the 8 hands down. The 16 would only be beneficial for editing videos, especially for rendering 4 to 8k. Those two programs you have shouldn't be too extensive on a Mac Mini. There are built very good to a point where you can handle work with ease
Look it up, it’s probably your backups through time machine. It always backs up your data so it’s faster to backup your computer and protect your data. But if you never back it up, it just stacks up in the background until you do. I don’t know about the new operating systems, but on the old ones there are ways to delete it.
@@WizzRacing Yes I figured as much, it’s an old issue that could be a problem if it gets you unexpectedly. I still use it. There are terminal commands to delete all the old backups regularly and it’s perfect as long as you know the issue exists. You just have to remember to type in a few commands to clean out any older backups and you are good. But definitely there are other solutions that are much simpler and some are even better with drive cloning. But Time Machine is one of the best for backing up individual files, I would say Carbon Copy Cloner for clones, and Backblaze or something for a remote backup. What did you decide on in the end?
@@ghost-user559 I still used the Terminal to delete them..As I found Acronis was not cutting it on Macs. It works fine on Windows OS... So I just made a bash file Desk Top program to speed it up...
@@WizzRacing Nice, I have made a couple cool scripts for things like manually disconnecting my Ethernet without unplugging it and a few other tasks (airplane mode). Time machine is pretty amazing and powerful once you get past all the ways it can suck if left unattended. I would also recommend a full drive clone like once a year, and if possible a clean install of the OS from one of your backups. You would be surprised how fast your machine will be after a year or so of backroad caches and processes build up.

but at least on Windows, 8gb is a joke.
@@ShFred Dont tell ma about windows 😂 It totally Fuped my new clean installation of Windows 3 times this mont and I have original copy on a DVD... I have a Mini with M1z it’s crazy fast!
@@Numernabis Believe me, I hate every second I spend on Windows.
I've been trying to escape it as a whole, but my workflow has trapped me in this bugged-up, annoying, inefficient fuckin ecosystem.
@@ShFred I’ve been using this cause of playing games but when I’ve switched entirely to Xbox Series X I’m not using my PC almost at all. The best choice I’ve ever made buying that Mini.
Thanks I thought I needed 16gb ram
Hi Serge, if i use only photoshop and illustrator and digital drawing 2d, not video editing, should i take 16 or 8 will be enought?
Thank you!
Take the 8 hands down. The 16 would only be beneficial for editing videos, especially for rendering 4 to 8k. Those two programs you have shouldn't be too extensive on a Mac Mini. There are built very good to a point where you can handle work with ease
I just can’t upgrade but I can return or always pay to buy another $700 - 900 Mac mini.
M1 Mac Mini or the M1 Imac? Wich one is better? Anyone. Thnx for this fine video.
Beautiful! And the Mac is pretty too 😝
Perfect
I just got my first Mac...I'm still stumped as to why "Other" is grayed out and is 100gb in size...I don't have close to 100gb of anything on it.
Look it up, it’s probably your backups through time machine. It always backs up your data so it’s faster to backup your computer and protect your data. But if you never back it up, it just stacks up in the background until you do. I don’t know about the new operating systems, but on the old ones there are ways to delete it.
@@ghost-user559 It was Time Machine..It keeps so many backups. And only dumps them. When memory gets low..Why I use a different Backup software now..
I think the difference is the amount of cores. 16 vs 8. Double the cores. So the 16 gb will multitask much smoother and less lifting.
Great video.
As a budding documentary filmmaker, considering the affordability, I am just curious if I can make a feature 4k documentary (90 min) on this mac?
Please share your thoughts.
PS: I am considering to edit in 10-15 min segments and stitch them all together at the end.
TIA.
Yes you can
Doubt it.
I am currently editing a feature film documentary shot in 4K on the base model MacBook Air M1. Just make sure to use fast SSD's via USB C and you should be good.
