    J1Q, DK: The observation was made on X that not only is the Penguins' defense shambolic, but that even the most veteran members of the team seem strangely lost within a system they've been executing for years. I struggle to reduce that to an issue of personnel. I don't feel like Sullivan has lost anyone's respect or that he's being rejected, but I am increasingly persuaded that his time of leading, inspiring, amd motivating this team is past, and actually that the wise and appropriate moment to hire a new coach would have been prior to the start of this season. What's your take?

    I think it’s finally gotten to the time where maybe a coaching change is the drastic thing that is needed to try to turn things around.

      I agree. I don't know what else they can do that's significant. Jarry surely isn't on any GM's radar. I just wonder how badly Dubas' hands are tied with ownership in regards to their love of Coach.

      @@dw1784 Or maybe change out players that don't fit in and turn the puck over and over and over. This Pittsburgh idea that a Stanley Cup Champion coach forgot how to coach is ridiculous. Has the revolving door worked for Montreal in the last 40 years? Has it worked for our own Pittsburgh Pirates?
      You have two givens. Crosby and Sullivan. Your minds are clouded by popular opinion and not logical sense. You get rid of the guys who make shitty pass after shitty pass and defensemen who cannot play defense.

      @@paladin1726it’s clear you have a misguided view of coaching in the NHL. Good coaches expire in a certain room all the time. The shelf life of an NHL coaching tenure is pretty short and it’s super common for underperforming teams that get a new coach to go all the way.
      Sully was awesome for this team when he first arrived because he didn’t give a crap that he was coaching Crosby, Geno, letang, etc, he kept them in line. I remember him screaming at them to shut up and just play. Not now. They’re all a bunch of buddies. No one holds each other accountable. It’s time to move on.

    • @dw1784
      @dw1784 4 дня назад +2

      @paladin1726 I never said Sullivan forgot how to coach. He has a specific coaching style. 6-8 years ago, Pittsburgh had a roster that could win with that style. It's proving very hard for the team to fill roles to fit that style again. Go ahead, attempt to replace 12-15 of the players like you want. It's nearly impossible. I'm not just some fan boy. I'm a former university hockey coach who understands that sometimes it is the coach who needs to adapt to the roster, or risk being the one to go.

    Advanced analytics for the most part is useless. One 2-on-1 counter-attack chance is better than minutes of zone time with countless shots from the perimeter, but CORSI will tell you the latter is way better. One screened point shot from 40 feet is better than 5 unscreened shots from 20 feet, but every advanced analytics will tell you the latter is way better. And one shot from the slot from ... say Nikita Kucherov ... is way more dangerous that 10 shots from ... say Dominic Simon. But advanced analytics will tell you that you want those volume shots from Simon, instead of the shot from Kucherov.

  • @mrchady
    @mrchady 4 дня назад

    Screening the goalie is a concern but it's certainly not in the realm of this teams defense and that's a knock on every player on the team. The amount of high danger chances they allow is abysmal. They are just too slow in every which way. It is what it is.

    On playoff roster he’s a 2/3rd liner/. On this team he’s a top 6 who has to produce. This is not a great roster. He can play better and I expect he will but he cannot be counted one. There is a reason Carolina dumped him after just signing him. I think we see the potential downside.

    The Erik Karlsson trade was so poorly thought out, and yet morons will still defend to the death how great of a trade it was. You dont generally win a trade if you wind up with the asset that is least movable in said trade.

    • @PensFan96
      @PensFan96 4 дня назад +1

      To be fair, alot of the those players are still on the Sharks and aren't great either.
      So if you wanna really boil things down, Karlsson still is better than all those guys we traded out.
      It was bad contracts with low teir players traded for a single bad contract with a decent player attached.
      Remember Mikael Granlund?
      Yeah me neither
      It's not always about winning a battle of assets, sometimes you just want better players, and regardless of how you feel Karlsson has performed to date, he was negative +/- when we got him.
      He's doing what was advertised.

      @@PensFan96 I've watched Erik Karlsson for years and I've always thought he was overrated. Even when he made a run in Ottawa it was a gimmick that required structuring the whole play style around him.
      The Penguins traded multiple smaller contracts, one of which was moved after the trade, for a player who doesn't fit their system and who has a contract so high combined with a no movement clause that it appears to be a situation that is nearly impossible to get themselves out from.

      Kind like a Llamar Jackson type thing.
      However, I don't think the trade is the issue at face. I think they need to adjust their system to accommodate said trade.
      Like, what was the front office supposed to do tho with what we had, for real? We had no assets to cap dump any of those contracts and there was no room to adjust anything AND we were up against the AHL veteran cap.
