Voguing is a highly stylized form of dance that originated in the African-American gay-trans community around Harlem from the 60s, 70s and 80s. There is a 1990 documentary movie called "Paris Is Burning" which features voguing. In that same year, this video and song came out, thereby making "voguing" more mainstream, although it didn't really catch on very widely as a "dance" trend, as far as I know. By the 90s, I wasn't going out to dance clubs anymore; perhaps younger folks who were going to dance clubs in the 90s could tell you if it caught on, generally.

My favorite Madonna song was one of her very firsts - "BORDERLINE". It was the first song to make the top 10 list and the song that charted the longest of any of her songs to date - 30 weeks. When I hear it now I can't resist moving to the beat and singing along; it reminds me of being a care-free 20 year gal "partying" with my girlfriends on the weekends 🤨😁.

Madonna was introduced to Vogueing when her longtime friend Debi Mazar who Madonna met in 82 at the Danceteria night club took her to the Sound Factory night club to see Jose Gutierrez and Luis Camacho of the House of Xtravaganza. Madonna was so impressed by their dancing that she asked them to audition for her upcoming Blond Ambition Tour and they're in this music video. They also appeared in her behind the scenes of the Blond Ambition Tour documentary called Truth or Dare.
And all of the male backup dancers are in the documentary called Strike A Pose which is their lives 25 years after the Blond Ambition Tour and Truth or Dare how their lives changed and how the tour affected their lives and how they became role models and how they affected the lives of their fans.

this is the best madonna's project. summarizing her career. perfect pop beat, perfect quotations, the glamour, the nice people around. It makes no difference if you are black or white, if you are a boy or a girl. there's nothing to it. you're a superstar. get to the dance floor. that's the key. she wasn't the best singer or the nicer girl. and you can feel like you are a superstar if you believe (or pretend) you can be. like marylin and greta garbo. like she did. it's perfect. believe it or not. hands up. her best project.

I had a friend who was a huge Madonna fan back when we were in college in the 90s. She had like 6 big CD folders full of Madonna, everything she could get her hands on, imports, bootlegs.
About 2010 I saw her for the first time in awhile, and I mentioned how I'd heard Like A Prayer on the radio on my way there. She pleaded ignorance of ever being a Madonna fan. She's a bit of a hipster....I guess it just isn't cool or something.

No one can deny her place as a legend in music, like her or not. This song was a club favorite. No one sat when this came on. Lots of people doing that dance too. I could never go there, but I think this is my favorite Madonna song. She's got a lot of bops. I cannot begin to describe how much she saturated the 80s and 90s. No women Wednesday would be complete without her and that's coming from a non fan. (I appreciate her for what she has contributed, but she's never been a favorite artist for me).
