      I get that recommended a lot actually and it's going to happen. Maybe not per console, but where I can pick several across various systems, with a good representation of each and talk about them in the same way. I have been thinking of doing that for a long while now. Good games that are also great for anyone to pick up and play.

    I'm the oddball, at the time I only had a Playstation and I had a blast playing Gradius Gaiden, Einhander, Raystorm, Raycrisis, Darius Gaiden, Gokujou/Sexy Parodius and many others. Yes, nowadays I'm having good surprises playing/discovering the Saturn library, but I fee like while there were great exclusive shmups to the Saturn, we still had enough on the Playstation in case you could have only one console back then (which was very common and normal). Great video, as usual!

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +4

      Yep you're totally right. I pretty much used my Saturn for only import shmups as I wasn't too into fighters, but the Playstation was chock full of awesome games that no way I would have wanted to miss. You didn't make the wrong choice as the PS1 was superior all around, the game library was so much more varied and you could enjoy tons of genres. I played the heck out of my PS1, every genre imaginable while the Saturn was mainly the shmup machine.

    The alpha beam counter in G-Darius might be the coolest thing i've ever seen in an STG. The beams going back and forth like DBZ was just too cool. That was an amazing recovery with the capture ball too, btw. Great vid, Bro.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +3

      How could anyone see that and not think DBZ. Clearly the devs were going for that and it’s a cool idea. It was harder in the arcade as without auto fire you are pounding away at the button and it’s a struggle. On console you just hold down the button and win. But this game is hard enough even without that extra level. I gotta day G Darius is insane with recovery. Some later stages you die in the wrong spot and lose your power ups may as well start over. The amount of bullets becomes impossible. Trust me k got reeeal lucky on that one part lol. But it made for fun footage.

    One thing I realized watching your videos is how fast you manage to master a new game. You must be incredibly efficient with your time if, in two weeks, you can master all these games, play some more (so you can find out if they're difficult or not), produce this video, and go on with your life! Hats off to you! And, by the way, I loved this video, made me interested in a console I never looked at for STGs.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +8

      Well I would say it's 50/50. It's true I am good at figuring out a game quickly for survival, as I used to do it a lot renting games for a weekend as a kid. So I didn't have much time to beat them. But the other part is I don't think I am truly mastering them that fast, it would be impossible (at least for me). I understand them quickly and how I need to play to do well and survive, but I don't get good enough to 1CC the game. Many times I used save states at the beginning of each level to practice over and over again and figure it out. So yes I am being efficient but also using lots of convenience features to learn it faster. Normally I wouldn't play it that way. But to make a video, I need to record certain things many times to show something, or play the level a certain way and experiment. I think if I had to play each of them fair, no saves, and start over every time, it would take much longer. Also, many of the games I know and have played before and finished, so that makes a big difference. Starting from scratch is tough. I think the editing and video takes the longest amount of time, but it's fun so I don't mind doing it.

  • @DrPepperone

      I have no writing background but just try to make something entertaining and have fun with it. I spend a good bit of time editing too the timing is important. But that's part of the fun, making something that also makes you laugh and look forward to others seeing it. I appreciate the feedback and feel like I am slowly improving. My big weakness is my voice, as it gets tired/hoarse quick so I start to sound strained. Maybe I need to hire a voice coach 😅

    Bravo! This one gave me nostalgia overload as PS1 was the system I really cut my teeth on. I distinctly remember renting Raiden II and In the Hunt when I was a kid only to be destroyed in minutes!! But those memories stuck with me all these years later and kept me coming back for more. Also props for catching one of the coolest moments in the whole Darius series at 22:05 with Great Thing illuminated in the storm...it's just perfect.
    I also want to say thanks for spotlighting Raystorm, everyone knows about it but no one seems to actually play it which is a shame. It's basically treated as a footnote to the likes of other 3D STGs like Einhander. While it may not be the spectacle of games like that, other than a couple questionable sections you can tell it's crafted by a team of hardcore shmup veterans and definitely deserves a place among the best, at least in my opinion. Of course that may just be the PTSD from clearing it talking LOL.

      I love that bit of foreshadowing in G Darius, including that level, where you catch glimpses of the boss you will face later. And dude is a beast too ugh. Most of the finals are. It's just a really hard game in every way. I'm with you on Raystorm. I always liked it and when you did your 1CC I knew I wanted to include it. I may have missed it otherwise as I just credit fed it myself when I was younger and figured it was no sweat that way. As it should be with 5-6 continues lol. At least this time I could manage with just one and I can live with that. I'm glad the timing worked out perfect with your 1CC to use it, and I learned some things I didn't know about it.

      Man if Super gives you flashbacks then this arcade port will give you full ptsd 😅 Although I have been wanting to try that new Super RType SA1 hack. I would imagine that's going to crank things up to a different level, and not in a good way, although I'll be glad to see it without slowdown

    • @TornadoADV
      @TornadoADV 3 года назад

      @@ShmupJunkie Yeah, I think a large portion of what Super R-Type suffers is from Irem's at the time, "unfamiliarity" with the console causing that terrible stutter lag that can stiff arm you on the frame delay from a sloppy dodge that combos with utter lack of stage checkpoints. At least they learned from this because I still think that R-Type III is the best of the series.

    • @noop9k
      @noop9k 3 года назад

      @@TornadoADV Slowdowns are norm for many games on the SNES unfortunately. Not only its rather low end CPU uses 8-bit bus, but also most games ran at lower speed (2.68 instead of 3.58) because this makes cartridges cheaper.

    Once you know that Nazca was made of former Irem staff, it's easy to see the link between Metal Slug and previous Irem games like GunForce II and In the Hunt. But if you look closely you can see how earlier games like R-Type II and Cosmic Cop had already elements of that signature grungy art style.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +2

      That's a good point, I never thought about RType at all and any similarities. I can see it a bit in RType II and the way it's detailed for sure. I don't know how much of that original staff went to Nazca, but it seems there was a turning point where they already had this great art style worked out with In the Hunt, as it literally looks identical to a Metal Slug game.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад

      Rayforce was always my favorite and a beautiful game. I'm a sucker for the 2D sprites and it had great music. When you play Raystorm you'll see what I mean. You won't find it super hard compared to what you play, but because it's so stingy with any extends and finds one way or another to cheap death you here and there, it's hard to get through without a continue. The US version is harder, but you get 5 lives. Japan is easier but you only get 3. So it's kind of pick your poison haha. As it's not one of those games you can play really well and collect a bunch of extra lives. Each time you get nailed just being at the wrong place at the wrong time it stings, and the randomness of some enemy spawns and boss patterns doesn't help.

I mean it looked identical to the arcade, but something was off. Dont know if you ever noticed, but the arcade was timed with the music.as some events happened, there would be a Corresponding change in the Tune. The way the music was almost part of the gameplay was amazing. The playstation version however didnt have this.. the music just played like a cd in the background & did not blend with the action. As a result, it felt detached for me.

I started my channel just to make some good pc engine mini videos as I wasn’t happy with what was out there and it kind of took off from there so I kept with it. But if spending 40hrs to make a video that nets less than half a day working fast food then I guess that makes me a RUclipsr 😅. In all seriousness thx for the great feedback and comment and I hope you enjoy more of my stuff. I’m having a ball making them and stoked so many are enjoying it and the channel is growing fast. To be fair most arcade shmups may have done similar. They’re nearly all super hard. What a beautiful game it was though it kept me coming back whenever I did see it. But yeah it’s much easier to jump on metal slug and credit feed it like many did versus In the Hunt.

    I found the best strategy on the missile section is to get above one shoot your bombs down and shoot forward. While you slow the one below you with your bombs the next missile can be sped up with your forward shot giving you the clearance to pass.

    Raiden having slow fighter speed is part of the core game. It all about memory position of where the enemy will spawn. Raiden doesn't ask you for forgiveness because it expects you to expect the unpredictable with no warnings. Enemy shooting pattern is also a memory game and once you have all of that figure out, the slow speed of your fighter no longer becomes an issue. It all about remembering where off screen enemies will spawn, where the position of your fighter is, and remembering firing spread of each enemy type.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад +1

      Absolutely it’s the classic Toaplan formula of many of their early games that Raiden borrowed so heavily from. It’s just something that always drove me nuts in vertical shooters and why I preferred games like Tatsujin and Slap Fight. But I totally get it and you’re 100% correct. What’s funny is I didn’t mind it as much for horizontal shooters like Pulstar, because it seemed to match the pace of the game and slower bullets. But yeah Raiden was always and still is a tough one for me as it plays against my sensibilities as a player.

    • @WatcherMovie008

      @@ShmupJunkie Raiden was my childhood game growing up in the 90s. I had a bootleg copy of it on my PS1 and I played it for days on end. Even now, I still play it on a hack psp that has PS1 games installed in it. I also grew up playing Gradius Gaiden and while I know Raiden and Gradius are two different types of shmups and play differently, I love them both because they're iconic and classics of their day. I didn't like playing View Point though even though I know it an arcade and PS1 classic, the 3d isometric view always fucked me over when trying to pass through opening walls. It’s also crazy hard more so than the PS1, but I can’t say for sure as I played the ps1 version much less not liking how they butchered the great music from the original. But you’re right viewpoint is rough no matter how you play it.

    Up to Raiden DX is all fun because it ends being a match of dodgeball when it hits max rank. Is great to have that scenario happening in Raiden 2 where you can get randomly sniped by a tank because yoloswag 360 hardscope. Also, there's a mod for Super R-Type on both original release and other... slightly illegal ways, that strips entirely the slowdowns on the game even on original hardware. Who's up to do a 1CC 2-All with the mod?

Or maybe I will do an RType video and can include that in there. I have been wanting to play the hack and see how I can do. I never played it much before because of the slowdown

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 года назад +1

      Really glad you found me! Yes, the PS2 has some good exclusive shmups though not a ton compared to some other consoles. Gradius V is the obvious one though it's quite difficult, it's also one of the best and made by Treasure. If you're looking for more bullet hell, Cave had some good releases on it like the original Mushihimesama (thought it's overpriced to buy the physical now and you can get it on Steam for much less). The original R-Type Final is also on PS2 if you like the series, though I always found Delta on PS1 to be a much better game and one of my favs. There's a ton of content I've made that'll definitely help you with some suggestions for various consoles. The most brutal shmups on a console aren't always the best place to start haha. So I made some good Beginner Shmups videos as well that have some useful suggestions for fun games that won't make you feel like a scrub.

    As crazy as Raiden DX is for survival , check out the medal scoring system. For max score play you need to collect them at one exact moment, dodging all the stuff while maneuvering yourself into the exact place at the exact time to collect. Absolute insanity for score players.

    • @ShmupJunkie

      Man I would have no chance. It's hard enough just to survive past stage 3 let alone worry about medals. I gotta stay away from the screen edges just to keep from getting popped. I don't think that's ever a game I will get a 1cc or near it. Just recording footage for the video was painful enough, as much as the game is cool. It's crazy there are those out there that can do it.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +1

      It was a time when consoles became powerful enough to produce the most gorgeous 2D graphics but still in their infancy in terms of polygonal gaming. And G Darius was by far one of the better ones out there. I went into that gen kicking and screaming. The gameplay 3D opened up in other genres was awesome but it was forced onto every developer even for games that didn’t need it. Either that or making a 2D game was often a sentence to obscurity. That being said it looks really nice now upscaled to HD! But nothing can replace that beautiful 2D art.

    For In The Hunt's infamous missile section one of the tricks is using your burst missiles (the green weapon pick-up) to shoot the missiles as they're coming up from the ground to create a bigger gap since they're pushed down/stalled when you hit them; I learned this from watching IcarusFW's 1cc on his channel. That and being patient and waiting for the right alignment between the gaps, of course. It's still really annoying though!

    Also, a funny story that happened years ago when I rented "In the Hunt". I enjoyed the game, but thought it was hard, and could only beat it by continuing several times. Then when I returned the game, the clerk at the rental place was talking down on the game, going on about how the game looks beautiful, but was too easy. I was like WTH? I asked to elaborate more and the guy said "all you need is to just keep continuing once you get a Game Over", to which I replied "sure, but the whole point is to beat it with a SINGLE credit, no continues". The guy was like "man, that's impossible, nobody can do that", and I was like "yeah, like you would pump quarters at the arcade to beat a game? No, so there you go". Some other people in the store started to make jokes at the guy, who was a bit pissed off by that moment.

    Best trick it to stay low on the screen and move gradually side to side, just firing and ignoring what you're firing at.
