WHIRLY BIRD - COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA / SONNY PAYNE DRUM COVER

- Here is something tangential to Bonzo. This is 'Whirly Bird', from Count Basie's opening set before Frank Sinatra's famous 'Live at The Sands' show. Recorded in early 1966 at the Copa Room in the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. This version is taken at a bright clip, and features the great Sonny Payne, burnin' on drums! He plays a smokin' hot solo after the song, but I opted out! 😂 The song was written by Neal Hefti, (composer and arranger who is probably best known for writing the 1966 "Batman" TV show theme song).
I often thought that Bonzo may have been influenced somewhat by Sonny's drumming...based on the sound, especially of the bass drum, the phrasing and the sense of timing, when setting up fills and accents. I later found out that Bonzo was actually a fan! Bonzo's brother Mick says in his book 'Bonham on Bonham' , that their dad Jacko took them to see Harry James Big Band in the mid 60's and Bonzo was floored by Sonny's drumming, apparently it left a big impression. Also, Jimmy Page states in an interview that Bonzo was impressed with Sonny Payne! Yet another jazz great who had an influence, along with Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, etal. I will do more videos, examining the influences among these greats, and giving examples of similarities.
This isn't meant to be a note for note transcription of what Sonny played, but I do play a lot of what he played. Hope you enjoy it, and it encourages you to seek out more of Sonny's drumming! He was one of the absolute greats. Check out his drum solo videos here on YT.

bonzo was ABSOLUTELY a jazzer, and if he was still alive today, I am sure he would have done his fair share of work with the buddy rich orchestra
LOVE that you are showing your jazz chops on this channel. NO doubt that Bonzo was listening to jazzers as a youth.
Damn that was amazingly wonderful! Payne was a relaxed extraordinary drummer! Smiled the whole time he played.
HELL YEAH!!!
INCREDIBLE!! FAST PERFECT SWING MR FLUDASS!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!
Man, that was terrific...it's so inspiring to hear a musical performance that so transcends the instrument played. Your musicality is off the scale!
Thanks ! 🙏🏼
Beautiful. Love your austinato.
Absolutely fantastic - as much as I love your homage to Bonham its this stuff that demonstrates the professionalism and technical ability that you have. Im a big fan of your work and have listened to a lot of your work,
Thanks very much
This is grown man drumming right here George, stunning playing of Sonny Payne! Yes, would love to see more videos of all of Bonzo's drumming influences, with the jazz guys like Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Papa Jo Jones, Elvin, etc. There's also the early rock 'n' roll influences like Charles Connor, & Earl Palmer, the soul drummers of Motown, plus Bernard Purdie, and Clyde Stubblefield, etc. He took all of these influences and made them his. Great stuff! ✌❤🥁
Yes, all the above Dave! Thanks!
Jazz drummers are so impressive.
King George!!! If you ever come to California to play let me know please. That was awesome man.
👍🏼
Man 'O Man that is some STUFF!

Really great tribute thanks!
Your dynamics along with that tempo are just next level! Then you're in the pocket with the walking bass...damn! Great work as usual George, thanks for posting.
Maestro !
Awesome. As always
Nice work George.

Bravo Encore
Fantastic feel, technique, sound and all around master class drumming. Love it!
Thanks Jon!
Wow ! So fast on that ride; and yet such impeccable timing!
Nice hat work King George. You are a real swinging Cat.
Thanks Steven!
Bonham should have seen this, wow you are incredible, it fits like a gun shot
Thank you so much, Mr. Fludas! My fave Basie standard - especially live in '74 with Butch Miles (very underrated drummer). As always, incredible playing.
I agree, Butch was so great with Basie.
I was going to suggest listening to that version too!
That was really great! I enjoy Sonny Payne, he was amazing. You are amazing as well. A true professional. Thanks for tossing some jazz on the channel.
Phenomenal. Your power at this tempo is amazing.
I can think of a fair few classic rock drummers (Baker, Watts, Paicey) who were also influenced by the jazz greats like Sonny Payne, Krupa etc.
Thanks again George.
Hope all is well with you and your family.
Thanks Iori, most definitely. Cheers!

Go George!!!
Sweeeet
Just when I dont think you can impresa me any more, you do a video like this. Just incredible George ! I love your Bonham video’s but I do like when you deviate from time to time. Wouldnt mind seeing a few more different drummer tributes.
On another note regarding jazz grooves like this, I was always fuzzy as to kick drum patterns with jazz grooves?
Thank you
Never heard this bootleg. Page and Plant were slamming those horn charts. 😉
Cheers.🍻
🤣👍🏼😊
😎
Snare tuning is amazing - did you tune all drums up a little from normal Bonham videos ? Sounded great - really enjoyed this
Oh thank you, yes I did two of them up just a bit, the Batter sides only
Can’t understand much but, as a drummer, it was thrilling to hear
I heard an interview with Mel Lewis and he didn’t think Sonny Payne was all that great with Basie was he believed Gus Johnson had better grasp on Basie’s arrangements. I think Lewis said something like Sonny Payne was a management decision because they wanted more flash/fireworks behind the kit.
Kind of cymbals ? Great
All vintage Paiste giant beats
@@BONHAMOLOGY nice sound I like 602s alot . mostly zildjian tho
man that ride sounds so sweet what size is it
It’s a 24 vintage Giant Beat
@@BONHAMOLOGY Thank you
What cymbals are you using?
Bravo George come sempre!!! Ho visto un bel video dove suoni con il grande Ray Brawn è molto bello, dove dimostri le tue capacità da Jazz Drummer. Puoi parlarci della tua esperienza con lui? Grazie!!!!
Thank you! Playing with Ray was one of the greatest, most formative experiences of my career. Really learned a lot about dynamics, drama, and how swing always needs to be the priority. He had such a powerful huge beat and drive.
@@sergio759 Millie grazie Sergio!

My god…. Have you ever actually caught fire while playing 😮
Zildjian?
No, these are all vintage Paiste Giant beats.
