I still miss her. No soprano can sing better than Sutherland. That’s what I dare to say !!! Of course, I like Callas,Tebaldi, Netrepko, Bartoli,Etc.,very much, too.
This music and performance has me in tears. The tone of the finest silver is married to a supreme technique and a musical bond with the music. Joan is one of Operas Glories. Thanks for posting. Regards-John
@sutherland4l Thank you so much for uploading this! What a special -- and rare -- treat to hear a young Sutherland. And one of my favorite arias, to boot. Thank you for sharing! It is much appreciated -
Wow- her intonation is amazing and her diction so clear. This me at the same time she made her debut in Don Giovanni as Donna Anna. Is there more?? Please let there be....It is glorious!
This would have been so perfect for her to have sung at her farewell in Australia - equally fitting as "No Place Like Home" - and more musically interesting.
Yes, it is a magnificent voice. But I am surprised by the amount of portamento she uses (carrying the voice between notes). Her husband, coach, and later conductor Richard Bonynge was very much a performance historian, and I wonder if he thought of this as the authentic style for songs like this of this period?
No one, but no one, quite like Dame Joan in this utterly beautiful 200-year-old love song!
Laurel and Hard's Bohemian Girl introduced me to this masterpiece. I loved it since I was about 6, almost 65 years ago!
There are no words to describe how beautiful her voice was or how brilliantly this was sung. She was incomparable.
:)
I still miss her.

Greatest voice in the history of the world...unparalleled beauty, superb technique, excellent diction. No other voice has ever thrilled me like hers.
Joan at the beginning of her magnificent career. Pure notes and precise articulation, wonderful music
One of my favourite songs ❤
Perfect visuals for this stunning, stunning performance. Thank you so much for uploading.
A real treat, absolutely lovely thank you for uploading this early Sutherland treasure

Superb, Joan Sutherland at her very best. R.I.P. great lady.
I cry every time I hear this song.
me too
I don’t blame you.
Indeed.
Joan Sutherland is superb in the rendition I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls
I always loved this aria, dreams of a common person about a more elegant life and, of course, love.
Beautiful words cannot describe it.
Every version I have heard I have loved, this one is the best
Chef Vegán ... it pleased you most:-)
Haunting...so beautifully sung. Thanks

제일 좋아요
Thank you so much for this! This almost became her theme song, along with Songs my Mother Taught Me. It's beautiful even though a bit scratchy.

An ideal showcase for Dame Joan's artistry.

Roberta Peters's 1952 recording of this Balfe standard was the best I had heard until now.Thank-you Dame Joan.

O beautiful! O Balfe! O Dame Joan! And the thanks and the glory of all it be the LORD's.
Amen
I remember Dorothy Jean singing this song 🎉❤
I cannot remember last time I heard this on radio...shame!
R.I.P love you always
The one soprano voice that I could listen to all day ; there is no debating personal preference.
Fine.
The inimitable Joan Sutherland.
Is there more material from this recital? Recordings of Sutherland's recitals before 1960 are quite rare.
This would have been so perfect for her to have sung at her farewell in Australia - equally fitting as "No Place Like Home" - and more musically interesting.
Thanks Don Hertzfeldt
CON UNA FACILIDAD PASMODICA PARA TODAS LAS FACETAS DEL CANTO MAS EMBAUCADORAS........LA DE LA BELLEZA DE LA IMPOSTACION VOCAL COMO ENCANTO DEL CANTO
Singing styles sure have changed!

Joan before she became a hasbeen.
