I had just started working for Conrail in Port Elizabeth, NJ. Started at midnight, and at 7 am came out of the Division St bldg to a white world. Everyone helped dig out, and when I got out to rt 9 every exit was blocked by 5 ft high snowdrifts. Ended up driving to Jersey City, getting stuck at every light and having people jump in to give me a push. Made it to rt 280 ( the longest, steepest highway incline anywhere in the US ) and 4 other drivers and myself pushed each other up. Finally got home to Cedar Grove 4 hrs later. I will never forget that blizzard.
Unique and very rare footage. Thank you very much. I remember that I was in Oysterbay, Long Island, NY. On the 1st of January 1978 I wake up and began to examine through the window all the territory, that covered with snow. The room lighted with strange white shade. Howewer on 31st of December of 1977, the previous day it seemed, nothing foretold
Lisa Cabello I was 7 when it hit Wyandotte, Michigan, snow was piled up to the front door. My school was closed for a week or so. When I hired on the railroad, old timers told me that locomotives's were buried under snow in Ohio.
I remember this because I was at the AFEES station to test and take the oath for the Army. The storm had just hit while I was signing my life away. The US Army put us all up in the hotel next door for free. I felt so grown up. I was still in high school but signed up for the delayed entry program which meant more $ in my paycheck for a longer time in service.
We had way more snowfall during the 70’s and mid 80’s then we have now...the winter of 78 was bad but good if you were a young person..Ohio river froze to where you could walk across it...
I was in New England, I was 10, I remember the dining room window was completely blocked and the side of the house was covered. We could actually slide off the roof.
Was 9 in withamsville east side of Cincinnati remember walking to king kwick with my pops to get beer and milk found a big pocket knife in the snow(was my 1st) and me and pops helped people push they’re cars
Yes that brings back memories ☺️ that was a blizzard that went down in history and I always remember that day it was a nightmare for me no power and guess what no heat we had to be rescued from the house 🏡 in my hometown mansfield ohio and we had to go in a snowmobile going down lexington Ave to go to the red cross downtown and stay there it was a day I will not forget 😌.
I would have been four at the time. I'm certain I remember this if it's the time the snow was so high I could sit on the unshoveled snow (I assume) and look over into the neighbor's backyard.
According to the national weather service,A blizzard has nothing to do with the amount of snow. A snowstorm is classified a blizzard by winds greater than 35 mph visibility 1/4 mile for at least 3 hours. You can get a blizzard while only getting a few inches if snow. Winds and visibility are what matters
Awesome upload ma says she way shoveling with Bobby Vinton half way to paradise on her Salman over and over yesterday was the anniversary with all the state's hit reaching a record 30 deaths
here in Indianapolis, it got 30.6 inches from the snow, its even worse in northern indiana, northern indiana gets 3 times as much snow as indianapolis, Indianapolis gets rain and snow mixed and gets lots of ice storms.
I was 18 and my apartment doors froze shut, missed work and school. The whole city halted. I enjoyed the look back. Thanks for the memories!!
