All were very good but number 3 Spruce/Brazilian Double-Top was my favorite. Love the comparison and the compositions as well. Scarfullery was new to me. Kudos to Mr. Palmer for his musicianship.
What this video really shows is that the talent of the player and the craftsmanship of the luthier transcend things like selection of tonewood species. Small nuances aside, the basic sound is remarkably consistent from one instrument to the next.
All of the guitars sounds great, but guitar #2 it has and amazing sound, deep bases and clear trembles and a very warm and sweet sound.

You sounded great man. I like the cedar ziricote myself.
king
I can't put my guitar down even now with my crappie instrument and lousy technique. If I had your skills and one of those instruments I would never sleep. By the way: what stings were used? Thank you for the wonderful playing and sharing these magnificent guitars.
Okay, I was sure it was #1 for me. Well, then 5. Okay, it's 2. No 4. In other words they sound great, and with Mr. Palmer playing yeah, they sound great.
Beautiful playing. Guitar #4 is my favorite.
I haven't heard cypress before but just absolutely haunting.
Number 3 for me, though each is beautiful. This one has a beautiful clear and open ring. Stands out to me among the others. Probably the Brazilian and spruce pair without the turnavoz. Liked the comment about the wine comparison. Definitely agree.
The sound is similar on most of these but #3 stood out as my favorite for having sweetness but not too much over the top color or tinny sound
O n° 1 e o n° 3, são excelentes, mas o n° 1 têm as notas graves mais acentuadas, eu prefiro.
Amazing. Guitar #4 La Leona is my favorite as well.
I liked guitar number 2 the best. Not that you can go wrong with any of them. Next time I should do the comparison video for you. I can play some mean good night ladies. Hahha
I'm more impressed by the player than the guitars. Seriously doubt these guitars sound so awesome in the hands of an average player.
Interesting to hear the historic instruments but I would take the Delarue.
Hi Matt
To me you sound good on any one of Michael’s 5 guitars but sound the best on the Cedartop. Having said that, my preference in this video is the La Leona which has clarity and a sweeter, refined sound especially for recording and number 5 the Doubletop with Ziricote for sure will project well in a large hall.
Thanks for posting...just love your fine playing and technique.
While the Spruce is beautiful, #1 and #3 are my favorites, I will always be a lover of the cedar top. They’re just so mellow and a calm delight to listen to. #2 for the win!
Gorgeous instruments and superb playing. If I had to choose, I suppose I would go for number one. Can you please tell me the name and where I can find the Scarfullery piece? It is lovely and I would like to learn it.
Ed Anderson thanks! That is from Sonata Sentimental by Rafael Scarfullery. rafaelscarfullery.com/compositions.html
My recording is here if you’d like: www.mattpalmerguitar.com/music
Thank you.
There’s a certain sweetness to guitar 1 that surpasses the others.
Whas is the tittle of Rudnev's composition?
All of them great guitars, for me I would choose #1 or #4. #1 is very warm a balanced, has pleasing overall sound, but #4 has something very full and pure in the trebles, as well as a soft glow. highly evocative potential buy also seems also to have a bit of a slower response.
Both 1&4 have the transparency and clear separation of voices of traditionally braced spruce tops, a feature I also like. To me #1 had a better bass response than the La Leona model.
The cedar was as you expect, very warm.
The double tops had a tonal thickness I associate with the new schools of guitar building, the lattice and double tops. Although they're initially very pleasing, I find my ear tires of their sound rather quickly.
- My 2 cents, (42 years playing, University guitar major)
I listened to this while doing someting else and every time you played on the guitar #4 I came over to see wich one it was because it sounded so much better than everything else!
Interesting you picked out that guitar without taking notice of its construction. I wonder if you like flamenco and lute music. Flamenco guitars are traditionally made of these materials. As far as I know, its not the natural choice for classical guitars. But I think its a matter of taste and what you want to convey in a pieces. Hence, a man needs all these guitars. I prefer the modern Andalusian Guitars for flamenco. They have amazing technology and cater for the warm sounds and clearer sound you prefer in what we call the Blanco. Of course the guitar sprang from the lute like instruments and I too like the lute like expression you can get from a blanco.
Bravíssimo
Number 3 and 4, bight but warm. What is the title of Sergei Rudnov’s? I love the tone, beautiful.
Number 3 for me, Spruce but not too bright. What is the title of Sergei Rudnov’s? Beautiful tone!
#1, it has the best tone for my ears.
Now I know why I suck when playing such pieces...I have no fingernails..!!
All 5 sound great. Well, I have a Michael Thames guitar, Spruce top and Brazilian rosewood b/s. Mine never sounds as good under me, but I believe it will be as good as any of these 5 guitars under Matt.
It's very tempting to see 5 Michael Thames Guitars played in a row. Matt Palmer performs exceptionally. And comparison is the mission. Not an easy one. Because, regardless of who is playing, the action of each guitar varies slightly in every different sample. Nevertheless, La Leona notably stands out most of the time particularly to whom brass tornavoz might be interesting. The trebles and deep timbers on average strokes are what make the difference in general. Having said that I would like to extend my modestly ranking:
#1.Guitar 2
#2.Guitar4
#3.Guitar5
#4. Guitar3
#5.Guitar1
Without a doubt for me the winner is the Number #2 guitar. Thanks for you video!
I prefer the first one...
A mi parecer las con mejor timbre la numero 5y 4 mi opinión una muy profunda y clara, la otra brillante y Clara
Beautiful instruments & playing - may I ask what strings and recording equipment were used?
Wondering how Michael Thames hasn't been on my radar more in the past. These are all inceredible. Rare to find someone who can do both traditional and double top so well. - Beautifully played too!
The last one was my favorite but La Leona really packed a punch, Clear contrast between them all
They are all wonderful guitars but to me it´s the number two that has the sound that appeals to me.
Amazing - like five bottles of fine wine, each will appeal to different palates but all are individually superb. 🍷
great demo, well done, and beautiful guitars, love to have one!
Nicely done. Bravo!
For the uber prestige, sometimes inaccessible, concert guitar artists. For all of us not in that realm, “Fine” arts might seem arcane, but just focus on how it makes you feel. Art isn’t a noun, it’s a verb. Do art.
lovely play and lovely sounds. I like most the #2
Your playing is fantastic as always....I love #4
Gosh! These guitars all sound great!
What are the titles of each composition? It'd be nice to give "credit" in the .... um, credits?
Daniel Delgado titles in opening credits.
i bet i can make that guitar#2 sound good
#2 bases, treble lovely
Great video Matt!
What song he played in first session
Definitivamente la que suena mejor es la 5
"This song (4:37) is a plagiarism of Brazilian music "nesta rua" by H. Villa lobos
É um arranjo da peça tradicional "Nesta Rua", como existem outros.
For me 2 5 3 1 4
Can we know who made these lovely things.
All guitars here were made by Michael Thames 👍🏻
All oft Thema☺
Muito lindo o som
No.3
No 1. Those heavy basses of the double tops are a huge turn off for me. Don't like that at all.
However unfortunately they all have "scratchy" trebles. That may be the player's nails or they're using trebles that are not polished.
