You backwash and rinse your filter first, then drain further using the waste position. When you're all done you should leave the handle between positions up on one of the ledges.
Yes you use the backwash function to drain the pool below the skimmer. Turn your pump off as as soon as the water is below the skimmer right after all the water in the pump is drained you don’t want to run the pump without water in it

I get all you are doing, but do I backwash and rinse before the water level goes below the skimmer, or after?

The winterizing of the filter is the same. Ingrounds need to have the lines blown out though.

Why doesnt he mention antifreeze in the main lines so your underground pipes dont freeze.
These instructions are how to close aboveground pools which do nota have underground lines and therefore do not need antifreeze.
