    Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series on the history of Rome continues with an episode of the post-Caesar Civil Wars, as we look at what happened after the initial shock of Caesar's assassination. Previously we talked about the battle of Mutina and its aftermath ( • Post-Caesar Civil Wars... ) as Octavian, Antony, and Lepidus created a triumvirate, taking over Rome, which signaled to Brutus and Cassius, that there will be another civil war ( • Octavian and Antony: t... ). The latter collected their legions and started building their base of operations, leading to the battles of Xanthos and Rhodes ( • Battles of Xanthos and... ), and that, in turn lead to the battle of Philippi that would decide the fate of the war between the Caesareans and Pompeians ( • Battle of Philippi - P... ). After Philippi, Octavian and Antony basically divided Rome between them. In this episode we will see what was happening in the western part in 41-40 BC as Octavian had to deal with a number of enemies and crises, which culminated at the Perusian War where Caesar's heir was forced to fight Antony's wife Fulvia and his brother Lucius ( • Perusine War - Octavia... ). On the other side of the Roman realm, Parthian-Pompeian alliance led by prince Pacorus and Quintus Labienus invaded and forced Antony and his lieutenant Publius Ventidius Bassus to defend in West Asia in 40 BC ( • Pompeian-Parthian inva... ). Back west Octavian finally decided to attack Sextus Pompey in order to take over Sicily leading to a number of battles, most notable among them at Mylae in 36 BC.

      @@rotciv1492 you forget Octavian saved Agrippa’s brother from punishment during Julius Caesar’s civil war, so yeah Agrippa did do quite a bit, but his loyalty was earned by Octavian early on and he stuck by his side and eventually was made just as powerful as Octavian (Augustus) himself later in life

      @@rotciv1492 Octavian, you should note, was NO warrior. The dude was an outstanding administrator, but a general he absolutely was NOT. Most important of all, he was well aware of his shortcomings in the war department, that’s why he relied on Agrippa for everything military because he knew of his friends competence in that area.
      In fact, Augustus had a gift for recognizing peoples inborn talents and placing them in areas they’d excel and flourish which, some would say, is more useful in a leader than just martial ability.

    • @varana
      @varana Год назад +35

      There's much, much more to being a successful emperor than personally winning battles. And after some early blunders, Augustus excelled in that department as a politician.
      Not only recognising his own shortcomings and Agrippa's talent, but also his loyalty, and managing to keep him loyal through all these years, was just as important. If you have good and loyal generals, you don't need to do the winning yourself. And keeping it that way, in an age when successful generals usually developed ambitions of their own, required serious political skill.

      Invictus did an Arabia video. Pretty easy answer, they couldn't find a guide who wouldn't betray them so they figured poking around blind in the desert was suicide. As they consolidated the East the Arabian tribes were treated as a buffer between Rome and Persia. The inability of either to subjugate them longterm is part of why they were able to unify so fast under Islam.

      Byzantium during the 8th century, this is such an interesting part of Roman history when the Eastern Roman Empire was still reeling from losing about half of their territory while still having to contend with the same unified Caliphate army (unlike the already splintered muslim factions during the time of the 1st crusade) that so easily conquered their long time Persian rivals while also constantly beating the Byzantium army in open pitched land battle for more than a century (resulting in the ERE developing the thematic system in Anatolia during the 7th century which focuses on ambushing the Caliph raiding parties as they realize they could no longer risk taking the Caliph army head on, even in their own territory).
      Bzantium annual revenue went from around 6000-11000+k solidi during Justinian times to just around 1800-2000K during the 770s, this was like a dark age for the Romans, its a shame there are barely any videos covering this era.

However, I have been disappointed that many of these respected channels have been advertising shady products like MasterWorks, which to me sounds like another form of NFTs, preying on human ignorance. There is another product, and I apologize in advance if it wasn't on this channel, where you can buy a paper which (supposedly) makes you an earl in Scotland
    I know the research and production of these videos aren't cheap and you have to find ways to keep the lights on. But I hope that in the future, you can find advertisers that live up to the standards I have come to expect from Kings and Generals

    Really looking forward to more of this series of the progression Octavian reaches to become sole emperor of what will become the Roman Empire but let's not forget he had to earn it but with the help of the brilliant Marcus Agrippa 11:27

      Absolutely agree with you there Marius.
      Also your military career is one that I studied quite often and learned much.

      @@MarcusAgrippa390 I second this. I too studied his and your own military campaigns in preparation for my own, the manner by which you defeated Sextus Pompeius was awe-inspiring.

    That naval battle of Cumae took place between the island of Procida and Monte Di Procida. The reason why I know that is because I’m from the area.

    Just saying but I can’t wait to see you cover mark Antony’s Parthian War and his campaign against Armenia and I can’t wait to see you cover Antony’s Parthian War because fighting on the side of Antony was king polemon the first of Pontus but also fighting on Antony’s side would be his opponent in his campaign against Armenia and his opponent in his campaign against Armenia would be Armenian king Artavasdes the second of Armenia who was the son and successor of King Tigranes the great and he was also the maternal grandson of king Mithridates VI Eupator aka Mithridates the great.
