Hey, nice unboxing! YOU, will. Got me back into the model trains! I recently bought a hornby starterset, wich is coming in tommorow. Thanks for getting me back in again!
Further to your comment about Class 128 units pulling a tail load, during fairly recent work on Barmouth Bridge a similar unit was used to pull freight wagons. This was because other 'proper' locomotives have too heavy an axle loading.
Everard Junction has got footage of his class 128 running in one of his most recent layout updates. I think it's the December 2014 or January 2015 Layout Update. Hope that helps :)
Just recently bought a BR green one. Superb model! Remember seeing the blue ones as a kid in the late 70s and early 80s quite regular on the Manchester to Buxton line!
I just had to watch this video on the class 128 again, it is just stunning. The model just cries for sound and little diesel smoke coming out of the twin exhaust pipes, which would not be easy to do but..... Just imagine how beautiful that would be, sigh.
Hi it looks like it had bus engines, my father was an engineer for Glasgow Corporation Buses and they used to get calls from the then British Rail to see if they had a spare engine for use in a DMU and they would do the same if they were short of an engine.
My son got me one for Christmas ,yes they are heavy hope Santa didn’t have to many in his sack 😊,superb model will, all the best and happy new year 2019
I just read an article on the Class 128. Not only did they have two Diesel engines but they were not diesel electric, they had mechanical transmissions.
I just wish we had something like this today (perhaps based on the class 172?) instead of Royal Mail using 7,5 ton lorries, and used them to deliver mail on non-electrified routes, with passenger trains still having a compartment to put post and bikes, and then having small vans to link up post offices to railway stations. All main stations should also have platforms dedicated to postal trains.
It is an interesting model. I have checked t'internet and they had 2 engines each with 230 bhp so a more respectable 460bhp total. They were actually 15 litres in capacity so little power for so much volume. Buckets of torque I think though.
"Only 10 class 128s were built." Here in the United States, there used to be an electric locomotive (HHP-8) operated on the Northeast Corridor, and 21 were built. 15 for Amtrak, and the other 6 for MARC's Penn Line. (MARC is a commuter rail system in Maryland, and only the Penn Line is electrified.) They weren't very reliable, and, at least Amtrak's units, needed unscheduled maintenance every 12.5 days on average. Because of this, Amtrak's units were in service from 1999 until November 7th, 2014. MARC's units are currently being replaced with diesel locomotives.
When the Class 128 was on the front of a passenger train, was there also a locomotive pushing from behind, in push-pull configuration, because I heard you say that this unit had very low power. Was it so low that it only had just enough to move itself?
Your obviously too young to either realise BR DMU/Parcel Cars history and correct use of an apostrophe. 1950's is correct :-) Please take less time talking about the boxes and reading out all the instructions. BTW the diagram isn't "an exploding diagram"!
These units used to hang out at stockport in the late 70's and early 80's as I remember them there. Top review!
What a superb model.... Quiet, smooth and beautifully detailed....just fantastic.
An excellent model, with an incredible amount of detail, even on areas that are not normally visible. Well done Heljan.
I love all of your videos Will because you do not miss a single detail

Great video. The loco looks really nice.
I have legitimately spent 3 and a half hours watching your videos
Hey Will, these locos were fitted with 2 Leyland 230hp engines, one for each bogie as you can see underneath. Excellent video as always!
My absolute favourite Heljan model

Hi Will please do a detailed look at the Royal Scot train set please!!

I may get one. Looks like a good unit they are not much from gaugemaster.
How about a short Crewe Works video fitting the DCC chip? I heard that these Heljans are difficult to get into.
My Dad loved these so much he has two Royal Mail ones and a BR one
Excellent review well done.
Well done for stopping yourself from swearing will :-D
I've got the Class 128 and I love it....great review too 😀

I will have to get one now that I have seen this video, maybe the BR green one. There is also some old footage of these on YT in the 90's

will do you know what would look cool is if you got one in royal mail livery
I've never seen anything like this before!... but I think I want one
Quite the locomotive! You should maybe purchase an American N scale locomotive to complement your HO ones
You should do a compilation of golden review boards and the trains that got them.
Great review, such a strange design never seen anything quite like that, did you know heljan make a garratt?
If you look at the class 128 from 1980 MrDelitc trains at Peterborough you will see it

Hi, just ordered the red one of these, totally outside my normal era but was taken by it, have you had to service it yet? Cheers have subbed
I am going to get one of these
It would be interesting to see this loco pulling a set of blue Mk. II coaches.
Not a loco, a self propelled parcel car
