Call customer service, ask them about this issue, quote the model number/serial number. The gent who repaired ours was able to get GE to cough up for the parts (preapproved before work started), however we were still responsible for the labor, nearly $200.
U R Correct We have had the machine repaired. At fault was the on-board controller that controls the engaging of the agitator "clutch". If it fails, the unit remains locked in place, so when in wash cycle the entire drum spins to and fro, instead of only the agitator spindle. Apparently a known issue with this model, required replacement of entire motor assembly and spindle drive shaft, parts were covered under warranty.

Glad to hear you got it repaired and covered under warantee too. Most people would just drag it to the curb and buy another machine.
The wash basket should not move back and forth during agitation. Only the agitator should. I suspect that the tub brake is disengaged or broken.
But my warranty expired a year ago dam.I have same problem with my ge washer.
