Thanks for the review guys and really glad you liked it. I particularly love this little/big sword and that is why I wanted to send it out to you so you could share the love, but thanks for a balanced review. Basically any review is worthless to both consumers and makers unless it is a fair response so firstly I appreciate your opinions and secondly as I have said before I love your energy - keep it up.

The second batch of the Tod Cutler swords are truly a step above the first batch. Like Vic and Jon, I wonder if there are different makers working on these 3 models. I'm really happy with the spine now more aligned with the direction of the tang, as it's really a defining feature on most of the surviving type F1a falchions. It causes the increasingly broadening blade to almost have a slight recurve on the edge. Nicely done!
I absolutely love the other 2 models of the 2nd batch, too. The Castillon arming sword and the long degen! Excellent choices of types of sword that are not commonly served on the reproduction market!

🤘💀 keep making awesome budget (ish) swords! Gorgeous stuff so far man! I would love to see a viking sword in the line up. Type O would be really cool. Just a thought 🙃

@@sinisterswordsman25 Type O... I thought I was going insane searching for about 15 min for a type O falchion and all permutations I could think, since I never heard of that before. Then I saw you meant a viking sword... 🤣

Wonderful review guys! It must be Falchion friday =) Glad to hear so many good things about this piece from Tod, and very generous for him to send you the extra bit of kit.
This is decidedly a step up from many of the other examples out there, including from some custom makers. I have a commissioned f1A I am playing with that does not have ANYTHING like the distal taper it should right now.
Looks like with a good edge it is doing some mean work. Also glad to see some experimenting with the thrusts. Great stuff all around lads.

Re: Your question about Krieger historical shipping to USA. Almost two years ago I ordered a Rauber Messer from them, with a 10% discount for Black Week. Payment was via international bank transfer. Shipping to USA (Ohio) was 100 Euro (perhaps a little high because I requested to pay in full in a single payment rather than their usual two, one up front and the other when finished, so shipping had to be estimated for a date in the future). I received the messer six months later (original estimate had been five months). It is delightful, handles like a dream in flow drills, well worth the wait and a fantastic value for the money. Scabbard is good too, with just a slight rattle when shaken vigorously, but retains the messer when held upside down. Paula at Krieger Historical was quite responsive to emails, so excellent communication as well. I will do business with them again.

Todd’s products are so solid and accurately made. I think while it’s a higher price, you get AN ACCURATE PERIOD SCABBARD!!! That’s unheard of. I’ve been an arms and armore geek since the 1970’s drew swords for Museum Replicas and for Marto in Spain. Begged them to make functional practical swords with full tangs and distal tappers. Bought Del Tin in the 80’s and 90’s and those were 300-400 dollars, with nothing but cardboard on the blade. So all in all, expensive, but as you said, worth it. Great review. Great sword. My son and I just made a scabbard for his Windlass Thorpe clip point Falchion. Wood core, hand stitched and laced with Elk hide belt.

That's awesome. We really are in a good time for collecting high quality functional replicas.
I love that Tod does period accurate scabbards and hilt furniture. It really makes his sword feel more "real" to me somehow.
Solid job parenting, and we'd love to.see the scabbard!

I fight ancient-medieval duels and have blades from all the best smiths. Once sharpened most swords only survive for a very limited period during training/fighting, but Todd's rarely break (and it makes a huge difference to me having confidence in your weapons during a fight).

For some strange reasons, some videos end up feeling better than others. This is one of those times. Great video!
I think you guys represent the people that these swords are made for. These are historically accurate or historically plausible swords that are fun to use as backyard cutters. So of course you guys need to be the ones to have the most experience playing with them. 😉
I agree with everything you said, and while I would prefer more the clip tip falchions, this is the iconic shape that I know (and would draw as a kid) for a falchion. Glad to see it got a deserving spotlight.
And unfortunately, you are also right about the price. It's the reality of our times. It's not Tod's fault, it's not the customer's fault, but this is something that needs to be said so that makers take notice and keep the growth of the market sustainable.
Last, Jon's story about having a sword in a bar. Replace the location from US to UK and count the minutes until cops show up to book you for a serious offence. 😅
P.S. Was Jon drinking water? He must have been ill. I hope he feels better soon. 😄

Thanks! Sometimes all the aspects of a video come together nicely. We both agree that this video, for whatever reason, really represents some of our strongest work. So we're glad it's landing with our audience.
I think you're correct with all of your points. And that anyone who's interested and can afford this sword would have a lot of fun with it.
Jon was drinking a cider that happened to be clear. We can't summon the courage to talk sword nonsense on the Internet with water 😂😂😂

    Regarding Krieger Historical -
I ordered a Rauber Messer in October of '22 and received in in April '23. Emailing was super pleasant and when they emailed me to let me know that my sword was ready, I got a beautiful picture of it to whet my appetite. Even with an 85€ shipping charge, it was totally worth it. That said, I wish they had different payment options aside from bank transfer, both for the security and hassle.
I happen to live near Matt Jensen, so his review of it features my sword. I'd be totally happy to order from Krieger again.

700$usd is alot of money. But everything is relative right? For this sword, it would probably be around 1000$cad for me to buy. That's a lot for me right now. However, if I bought one I would have it for the rest of my life! That's what's awesome about swords! Unless you basically deliberately destroy the thing it will last literally forever.
At least that's what I tell my fiancée 😂
I wish I had more money I would buy this thing for my little brother.
He's always wanted this kinda falchion.

Have been a huge fan of Tods wares for years and was So pleased when he made a "Tod, Cutler" version of this, my favourite blade shape (...to my mind, a high end "knightly" answer to the question, "sure, but what happens if you become dismounted and 30 peasant levies try to mob you?"...) rather than just a completely custom creation, from "Tods Workshop".
And yes, I got one the week it came out.
The Mrs was Less than pleased... but if 30 peasants try to break in? I'll have the last laugh. 😅

Looking at fit and finish is fair enough because potential buyers want to know. But to paraphrase what Tod says, do you want factory produced level fit and finish, or historical accuracy?

    • @UnsheathedSwordReviews
      @UnsheathedSwordReviews  2 месяца назад +2

I think that really depends on the individual. Some people prefer the machined perfection look. While others want something closer to what was seen in period.
We take into consideration what the maker is intending with their pieces. And we try to distinguish between what they are going for and what might be poor execution.
We also try to show plenty of photos and videos so viewers can make their determinations without having to listen to or agree with our opinions.
Jon and I tend to have different tastes in regards to fit and finish. So hopefully we can give opinions from both sides.
      Thanks for watching!

Interestng question... [6:25-6:34] Numerous shortcomings of the fuller and the blade as a whole are clearly visible. Considering the price listed, I personally would prefer the "machined perfection look." That's why I'm not putting this blade on my wish list.

    So it's a "A" Range mugging weapon?
And pricewise, that scabbard is worth $200 alone yes?

    • @UnsheathedSwordReviews
      @UnsheathedSwordReviews  2 месяца назад +1

It's a very nice scabbard. For me. (Jon), a scabbard doesn't add much value to the piece as I display my swords bare bladed. About the only real use I get out of them is taking the sword somewhere to cut, or for a costume or something.
In most cases, I'd rather have an option to pay less for the sword and have it come without a scabbard. But some people feel exactly the opposite, and that's cool too.
      Thanks for watching.

They are both stabbing weapons for sure. Poignards tend to be less robust than rondels though, and usually have a cruciform guard, rather than the rondel's typical round guard as you see in the piece Tod sent us.
