Exactly, e.g. an obvious question to ask is "WHO gave assurances?" But no BBC stenographer is ever going to challenge them. Great piece Novara, as usual, but ultimately this refusal of accountability and its acceptance by so-called bbc journalists (or legacy media in that great phrase of yours) is no joke - this is our 'freedom' sliding out of view in front of our eyes.

The similarities to the French Revolution as well as Hitler's grasp for power, or China's experience are obvious.

Using the passive voice is the oldest trick in the book. The interviewer's next question in these cases should be 'who did the assuring?'.
Ahh the ol’ 1-year custom of forgiveness. The same reason we don’t look into crimes committed more than 1 year ago, or sentence people to more than a year in prison.

I disagree that the fact that it happened a year ago gives it less punch. I'm seeing lots of stories from people whose relatives passed away during the year and they were denied the chance to see them, perhaps for one last time, over Christmas. They made that sacrifice for public health but the government just stomps all over it.

Wow, I'm not British so this may not be my place (Lord knows I have low regard for my own country's politicians) but Jesus, the farcical nature of these guys is astounding.
