    i feel like these little updates throughout the year are gonna be so motivating! I also want to read from my tbr this year but luckily I only have around 40 books physically so not too bad! (its the 200+ books on my goodreads tbr that overwhelm me 😅)

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  5 месяцев назад

      OMG 40 is AMAZING!!!!!!! I was closer to that number last year and I don't know how I ended up hear (actually I do, its those darn library book sales that get me 😅)
      OH MY goodness I know what you mean about the goodreads TBR! Mine overwhelms me too!

    I'm close to choking at you getting rid of that lovely hardcover of Spinning Silver 😅 but I get it - I've unhauled so many books in the past few weeks and it genuinely feels so good to see my shelves not looking so cluttered anymore. You're under 100 - that's so great! 😊

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  5 месяцев назад

      HAHHA I KNOW I had to really be hard on myself for getting rid of that one, I keep thinking well I may want to read it eventually! I'm giving myself this benchmark of a year, like if I dont see myself reading it in the next year then its gotta go! You are SO right I feel the same way that it just feels so good to look at your shelves once they have less clutter like I am LOVING looking at my shelves so much right now!

    Your shelves look great. I don't mind mass market paperbacks. I probably wouldn't use them for decor, unless they had a similar look, theme, and size. I particularly like my small but growing collection of paperbacks from Hard Case Crime. Plus, the tawdry paintings from artists like Robert McGinnis or Boris V used for those classic paperback covers to crime and fantasy could be featured in museums. Jim at Mystery and Mayhem, along with Criminolly and Michael K Vaughn, show off some wonderful classic mass market paperbacks that throw me back into another time.

      Thank you for sharing, I LOVED to hear your perspective on mass market paperbacks!!!!!! I actually love looking at some of the more vintage mass market ones like the "paperbacks from hell" that I know Grady Hendrix wrote about! They just have the most inventive and special covers!

    I just started buying physical books again this year (well I bought a few last year but took it seriously this year with a channel now and all). Well. Ok. Most of what I have now is free little library books and swaps, and thankfully most of what I bought is used lol but loooord I've got so much now in just almost two months. I'm trying to finish the library books I have and then not check out anymore (although I have some on hold but I wont' put anymore on hold right now) and then go through my Kindle Unlimited books before membership expires. And then at least go through half my TBR on my shelves before I go back to the library route. I know a lot of what I got I won't keep so those'll prob be the ones that I get through first and then I'll LFL those.

      GOSH I had the SAME experience too where when I started on booktube I somehow started collecting so many more physical books! I still will read majority from my library but sometimes I go to library book sales and just go a bit crazy lol!! I love that you utilize Little free Libraries!!!! I LOVE going to LFL and have actually found some gems! I also love donating the ones I unhaul to them too!!!

    Agreed I DNF so fast if a book isn’t pulling me in, there is way to many books in the world!
    This is my first year of really keeping a count of my purchases and man it is looking real bad right now haha I need to slow down.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  5 месяцев назад +1

      YESSS Thats EXACTLY how I feel too!!!! like with hundreds of books on my tbr I always have one lined up next if the current read isnt doing it for me!
      Ohhh I think it is fantastic you are now keeping track of your purchases and I KNOW it is like a wake up call when you start looking at the numbers! Thats how I felt when I actually counted the unread books on my shelves...I was like when did this happen?! Now that we are aware of it we will be so much more conscious when we choose what books to buy in the future!! 💯🙌💗

    I'm always impressed when people can easily DNF. I struggle. Dnf for the 1st time year and I am at my 2nd DNF now. But it hurts me to not finish....

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  5 месяцев назад

      YES ohhh Vicky I REALLY understand the struggle to Dnf, TRULY! I actually my whole life could NOT dnf a book, I was a total completionist! And then last summer I did a 180 and started getting more confident in putting down the books I wasnt loving, which helped push me out of a reading slump at the time. But I at the same time know it is hard to not finish a book you start because you always have hope that the end could be amazing!!

    I love your nails in this video! Labryinth also has a special place in my heart, but I had no idea about the graphic novel prequels. This is such a fun project to watch. I'm trying to reduce my physical TBR, but I don't think I'll get it down to zero this year.

    6:19 - Listen to you! 😂 Last year, DNFing was difficult, but this year? Nope!
    I feel the same about mass-market paperbacks. When they're smaller than my hand, they're awkward to read.
    Excited for your progress!

    Dedicating your shelves to only the best of the best is such a good idea. I've moved to that too, but a bit more extreme lol. I borrow from the library first, and I am VERY LUCKY to have a super up to date and progressive library so most new releases are there within a couple weeks. So if the book isn't a 5 star OR one I want to be able to share (more for non fiction), then I don't buy anymore. I love that you're about DNFing too! Too many good books to get stuck on the bad ones or dull ones.

      P.S., the audiobook for A Head Full of Ghosts was lovely!!!

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  5 месяцев назад

      YESSS okay I am seriously with you on that as well!!! The one thing that I know I want to be more disciplined on is going to library book sales, because I will walk out with a bag full of books for such a good deal, but then I FLOOD my shelves with unread books that I dont know if I will like or not which I hate!!! But already this challenge is making me change my mindset so much and be more conscious, I have skipped the last two booksales my library had and may skip the next one as well until I can make more of a dent 😅🙏💯📚
      Ans I agree 10000% on DNFing!!!!! I feel like it has changed my life as a reader, like I havnt had a real reading slump now for almost a year for this reason!! 🙌📚💯
      OHHH Thank you for recommending A Head Full of Ghosts audiobook, I am definitely going to be listening to the audio hopefully this year! I really want to read it asap!!

    Great video! And keep rocking your goal! Go girl, go! Question: Do you count your DNFs on your list of read books? I'm having a bit of a dilemma right now. I'm in two book clubs and one of the books I have to read - I really don't like it. So, my dilemma is do I read it so I can intelligently contribute to the book club discussion, or do I ditch it and focus on stuff I DO like? Ugh.

    • @mikalareads
      @mikalareads  5 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you so much my friend WHOO!!! Okay that is definitely a great question and I totally see your dilemma! So for me, I do not count the books I DNF on my list of read books, but I do have a separate list I add them to so I can still track what books I dnf'd!
      For the book club book you are not enjoying, I think for me I may lean towards wanting to just DNF that one and move on to other things you are enjoying. But I may still write a few notes down for the book and report back to the book club why I disliked it and ended up DNF'ing it. I just feel like everytime I push myself to finish a book I am really disliking it ends up putting me in a bit of a reading slump! 😅
