When at night I go to sleep Fourteen angels watch do keep Two my head are guarding Two my feet are guiding Two are on my right hand Two are on my left hand Two who warmly cover Two who o’er me hover Two to whom ’tis given To guide my steps to heaven When at morn I wake each day Golden sunbeams ‘round me play The flowers nod to greet me And birds fly down to meet me Soft warm breezes kiss me And whisper that they miss me. O’er this there sail most lightly White clouds come for a party And to be their children Forever Forever Oh, Lord Bring me to Heaven Sleeping sofly, then it seems Heaven enters in my dreams; Angels hover round me, Whisp'ring they have found me; Two are sweetly singing, Two are garlands bringing, Strewing me with roses As my soul reposes. God will not forsake me When dawn at last will wake me.
The original is in German and the first verse is quite a good translation of it. I was searching around the internet for a while, but couldn't find verse 2 and 3 in German. Maybe those were added by an English/American composer or by the movie itself. Do you happen to know something about it?
Never heard of this movie until recently while googling Evening prayer from Hansel and Gretel and this came up among the videos with the song. Sounds like I’d like this movie, its “mold” or style is very similar to that of “Going My Way” and “The Bells of St. Mary’s” which were also released during the 1940s of course, the former in 1944 and the latter(the sequel) in 1945. What a fabulous job these children did singing. Just think, if any of them are still living to this day they’d have to be in at least their eighties. I just remembered: I recently did online research on this movie and I believe one of the Bells of ST Mary’s cast members was in this-Martha Sleeper(she played Patsy Gallagher’s mother in The Bells of St. Mary’s.)
Beautiful rendition! Because I didn't live back then, I connect 1941 with Operation Barbarossa. The violence and tragedy of WW2 seem to emphasize the serene stillness and peace of this song. Imagine if the Wehrmact focused solely on annihilating Britain and kept it's pact with Russia!
And imagine: This song was written in Germany in the 1890-ies, just 50 years before the war and this movie. We had a lot of wars around there in Germany: 1871 (French-German), 1914 (WW 1) and 1939 (WW 2). And in the middle of all this, the romantic opera Hänsel and Gretel by Humperdinck and this movie. What a crazy world!
Something I've noticed about these old movies. Whenever there's an operatic song like this and they pan to the audience there are always people disapproving looks on their faces like 1:50
Hi! I posted this. I've never thought of the time stamp of the less than apprreciative looks in these films. You're right though! In this instance, the looks came from a number of church choir members who sounded like an orchestera of scalded cats while singing. I think someone's posted the entire film here on YT. It's old, and a little cheesy but still charming! Thanks for writing! varadero
@@varadero1839 well that's what I've noticed for the movies I've seen. I can't speak for all. Movies are written by formula and I guess it was a standard plot in those days that have someone at odds with the song/singer.

Hi! I'm the poster, and I apologize for the lack of info here. This is from "One Foot in Heaven," a lovely film from 1941. Thank you for your question, and I hope you enjoyed it!
So lovely. Still in 2023
Beautifull angel voices.
Gives me a tear.
How beautiful and full of hope are the sweet and innocent children singing in prayer to Our Father in Heaven.🌠🌌🌹⚜️
I can listen to this everday

Two my head are guarding
Two my feet are guiding
Two are on my right hand

@Tamela Archer-Yes, I noticed that myself; the look on the one woman’s face in the congregation @ 1:50, as if she’s frowning.
We don't know the whole movie. Maybe there was a plot going on, where the womon disagreed in some manner with the conductor or with the whole choir.
Someone please post the lyrics!!!
