It's not safe to jump in the river especially when you are alone I'm glad you made the right decision
Currents are always stronger than they seem. Smart choice.
It appears you’ve adapted well to “bus life”. Smart not jumping into that river. It looked swift and no telling how far down it could have taken you! Good to see that you’re brave, better to see you’re cautious when it matters😀
Yeah, she scared me when she started talking like that.
Came for the build, staying for the adventures. It was always about the promise of hitting the road and living life with more intention, wasn't it? Now that you're doing it, I enjoy your videos even more. You're doing great. You are amazing.
Emma, back in the olden days, a well known American author, John Steinbeck did exactly what you're doing and wrote a book: my Travels with Charley (his dog). He named his camper Rocinate, after Don Quixotes horse. He went off in search of America, the place he wrote so much about.
I want to call attention to his Washing Machine: A five gallon bucket with tight fitting lid, solidly mounted on your vehicle. Add clothes, detergent, and water and just drive on to your next destination. The road will agitate the Laundry all the while you drive. Cleaner than you can get with quarters. Thought you might like to know.
Thank you for being cautious around rivers Emma, they can be deceptively dangerous and deserve our respect. I wonder if a short rope anchored to a tree (or other solid thing) would allow you to dunk in rivers when you're alone with a little more abandon. Mice will only live where there is access to food. Check your food stores for holes in bags or boxes of rice and other grains. Look for little tiny black poops near those things too, that's a sure sign. Thanks for the video . . . You're making it look like a dream.
I’ve watched you since the beginning bus build and I’d have to say you’ve got the perfect personality for this …. Basically I’m saying love the videos
I smile for every one of your videos Emma. It warms my heart to see how far you've come from the young lady faced with the massive task of fitting out an old school bus and making it into a home for yourself. I am so happy for you.
I love how everything is ‘tiny’… tiny dog, tiny oven, tiny stove 🤣 And really, none of those things are that small! Loving your adventures so far, it’s getting me super excited for my van adventures (which will begin in March 2023 all being well!)
As others have said, good choice to not swim in the current. That current looks too strong to even paddle board on. If you do find a slower river to paddle on, start going up stream (against the current) so you don’t end up going to far to be able to get back.
Keep riding that bike off road, nothing better then getting that experience. Slowly those moments when you lose traction will feel less scary and more thrilling and you’ll know when to put a foot down to straighten things out. Loving the motorcycle stuff
Great video! Beautiful scenery! Thank you for taking us with you on your adventures!
Emma, I'm always so happy watching your videos! Your channel is a big inspiration for me, I'm going to look at a bus this weekend, fingers crossed I'll take it home!
good luck!!
@@EmmaBuildsBirbie thanks! Any advice for driving a bus/questions to ask?
Great video of a beautiful area. The first time I rode over a metal draw bridge was unnerving but I finally figured out that the cycle will keep itself up if you almost turn loose of the handle bar, just let your hand rest on them and let it jerk around a bit, same with lose gravel. When I was a teen, I waded out in a strong current, and once I got above my knees it started dragging me down the river standing up and cut my foot so I dropped into the water until I could get to the bank and grab a small tree and pull myself out. Good lesson learned early. With rocks like that, and water that gets deep quickly like that, stay where there is little current as it will take you down river and you risk hitting your head. A river like that needs a kayak, a bicycle type helmet and lifejacket. You will never paddle up river in water like that, you need a place down river to take out, and never do it alone! Lakes were made for paddle boarding...
16:31 that view is what it's all about. wow! We can't wait to be on the road, enjoy and be safe!
River swimming 101 Check downstream for an exit. Don't try to swim upstream against the current. Unless it's clear enough to see, keep your feet up to avoid a rock wedge grabbing a leg and the current folding you over and drowning you. If swept away to the other side, walk upstream then swim diagonally across the current back to where you want to get out. Quite often if it looks fast on the surface, 12-18 inches below is twice as fast. And lastly, discretion is the better part of valor. Love your bus build. I'd name the mouse Houdini.
An old trick my Pap had taught me with streams, cricks, and rivers is to toss a leaf, stick, or anything that floats and Based on your knowledge of how water moves through a stream, choose two small sections (called “reaches”) of the stream equal in length (3 to 10 meters long). One of these should be a stretch that you think will have a lower (slower) flow speed, and one should be a section you believe will have a higher (faster) flow speed. The speed is determined by timing how long it takes for an object to float from one point to another, along a measured stretch of stream; and then dividing the time it took by the distance the object traveled, to get a rate in meters per second (meters/second). I hope this helps with future morning dunks at a stream, crick, or river!
so awesome to see you enjoyin yourself. I am almost done with my short bus and plan to head out monday from se ky to where you are now and more. I also have a honda monkey so this is so cool to see your with yours. If you see a wood grained chevy short bus, give a wave! Keep makin memories and stay safe.
You are definitely having great experiences. Thank you for sharing your awesome adventure with us today from Henrico County Virginia, stay safe and healthy
I so love all the dunk places you have found. Such a beautiful place. You are adjusting to bus life quite well. Look forward to more monkey adventures.
When riding down a rocky road...go slowly and use only your rear brake to slow down and stop or ride in the grass and go slow and use rear brake to slow down.
It’s soooo cool you have a Monkey Bike, I bought one in 2019, specifically for putting in my stealth camper and going on mini adventures in the day whilst away. It’s a fantastic way of exploring new areas.
Regards,
Dazza. 🇬🇧
Ah Love that Emma, having a great time there. Be mindful of rivers and streams, often the currents are really strong under the surface and its easy to get into trouble, I know from personal experience, although mine was in the sea. Your right to be cautious.... 👍🏻
Emma, since you are hiking around the wilderness by your self, please get a couple of sleigh bells and attach them to your shoes. There are things out there much bigger than you that will look at you as a snack. If you are making more noise it is less likely that you might walk up and startle a bear, big cat, ETC. I know it sounds weird, but it could save your butt.
Bear spray would be a good idea. Pinesol, bleach or ammonia (don't mix) could substitute. Could protect you and keep the bears out of trouble.
Camera trick. If you want to show how bad an incline actually is. Turn the camera to the side of the trail and show the angles of the trees coming out the ground.
You Rock Emma!!!!
jumping into a river without checking depth or for large rocks is a good way to get a large hospital bill or worse, it's great to be young and invincible but older you will be thankful if you avoid any serious injuries now. also get a PLB, no if's, but's or maybe's if your out by yourself it's a must.
I cam across one of your videos as i was searching for Honda Monkeys, now i think im hooked on your bus life vlogs.
On the mice issue believe it or not get some Irish Spring bar soap and cut it up in smaller sizes and place them all around including in the cabinets. Trust me, we just had mice get into our cabinets and ruin a lot of food and after we did the soap we have not had any issues.
There's a river in the UK that's the one of the most dangerous in the world called the bolton strid; it looks nothing more than a brook (creek) that you can jump over, but in reality it's a full river that has been pushed on it's side by geology, is very deep fast flowing and it will pull you under in seconds if you slip in it
Is possible to walk with a 2 or 3 foot smaller tree branch. Wave in front of you as you walk. Clears most spider/caterpillar webs.. just my .02
Whenever I watch videos about van/bus life I often wonder what would it really be like for me. You are so honest with your feelings and experience. I’m so impressed with your bravery and willingness to just keep trying and moving forward even when feeling a little apprehensive. I love your videos and watching your journey!! I was so relieved you did not dive into the river. The current looked strong! Looking forward to your next video!!
Emma, happy that you are doing so well on your adventure. I wish you the best always.
Smart move on the Oven. Excellent video.. Thank You...
So happy for you that you are getting to enjoy the fruits of all the hard work you put in. Keep safe and keep the great videos coming
I'd always assume that critters are trying to get in at least. Lived on a farm and had a mouse go across my face one night! Luckily I didn't get bit, and discovered that peppermint oil will discourage almost all types of critters. If, like me, you're not fond of the scent I've used dry sachets in cupboards etc and then a mix including lavender and cedar oil as a room scent which also helps drive them away.
Great vlog Emma!..
Enjoyed all your riding ,
Dunking and hiking..
Just the stuff I like to do, your fiiming And
Selection very nice!
Glad you didn't jump in
😊🏍🦧🐭👍travel on!
You are right if it makes you happy then it is exactly what bus life is supposed to be.
Emma, that view walking up to the lake @16:35ish mark... WOW!!! you are blessed! You've inspired me and i cant wait to start my own lil van excursion.
Nice...u should put some shelving up high so critters won't get into it. Have a great day and be safe!!
Yeah , That strong current would sweep a swimmer right down stream . And you could never paddle back up stream in that strong current with a paddle board . But if you were to hike up or down stream you may be able to find a calm pool to swim in .
Get use to mice. All the places you camp have tons of mice. And, they like to eat the insulation off wires. Raccoons eat rubber brake lines so they can lick the sweet brake fluid. Your bus is FILLED with holes and cracks for mice to enter. Mouse traps won't work. There is too much food everywhere for them to eat. They come out at night. You'll hear them running around and sometimes on your bed covers and under the sheets.
Stay out of the fast water. If you do go in lay on your back and feet down stream and slowly try to paddle to shore (SLOW). Don't use up your energy or panic. That's when you go down for the count.
that was my morning riding to work in the back country on my Fatty TW200. Its so relaxing
It's so nice to see you out, finally enjoying Nature and Bus Life. I hope you have many many enjoyable trips in the future.
Clear plastic stackable bens for everything on the floor of bus and shelves. No critters!
It's all that fresh air! When i hit the road for a month or so with my little teardrop camper I found myself eating more than I did at home. The outdoors/fresh air makes me eat more, or is it the extra exorcise ??? LOL
You're doing it and I'm watching! This is all about it Emma, all the work, all the drama, all the turmoil! It's just so great you make it work!?! See ya next week Emma...😉 👍 🚃 👌 😊
Love this! BTW, that fish tailing on your bike is normally from too much front or rear breaking, even gental breaking. Sometimes you just have to "pump" the breaks and down shift to let the engine/gears break for you. Or let go of the breaks all together. You're doing great out there!!!
Your out door activities are making your appetite bigger
Looking good!
I have a Honda Monkey too, and absolutely love it! love your adventures.
River flows are measured in CFS. Cubic feet per second. The river you were in looked like it was flowing at about 300 CFS. That’s a good flow for tube floating. If ever you are stuck in a moving river, try to direct yourself towards the shore or bank. The current isn’t as strong there. I’ve done a lot of white water rafting. Your doing good Emma! Proud Of You!
Glad you had a fun time down by the river. Stay safe enough, but have fun as you explore.
Breakfast Tip: 1) Line pan with tin foil. 2) Spay PAM 3) To save water use a spray bottle with vinegar and water. -- Great vids.
When you get to the bottom of a sandy rocky trail on your motorcycle and it looks like you're gonna go down it's called "Washing Out". Example: "Man I hit that trail back there and about halfway down the whole thing went jelly and right at the bottom I almost WASHED OUT! You see me wash out back there? That was a heart ripper!".
Good on you for getting out and tackling the tough road to get where you want on your Monkey. The more you ride, the more comfortable and skilled you will be. It's rewarding to see you reaping the benefits of your hard work with the bus. Also, if you're worried about currents in a river, carry a rope (with carabiners on both ends maybe, and/or a belt or harness) and tie one end around your waist and the other around a rock. Just make sure you get carabiners made for climbing or carrying the weight, or just use knots instead.
What a perfect episode!
Is it just me, or is the Birbie Bus starting to look more finished and live-able than before?
Good to see you gaining experience and confidence on the Monkey.
What a sweet little bike she is.
I bought a new Honda CRF300 Rally last year. It’s been a ton of fun.
Thanks for all the cool and interesting things you showed us on this one.
Take It Easy
I'm just watching that sasquatch sitting in trees behind you. ❤️👍👣👣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love what your doing, wish I was 50years younger.
gday emma from Australia never just jump into a unknown river there could be logs etc just under the surface good to see you enjoying the bus life thats what all your hard work was for .
that lake looks Awesome,Great looking Food
wow the place is so beautiful
What a beautiful place ! Those mountains and lakes are amazing!
Please be careful when going on rivers, they can be so much fun and deceptive at the same time. We were river rafting and got to the end it was the first time I went the whole way my 2 friends were at the edge getting ready to get off the river approximately 15 feet away so I thought wow their only knee deep I thought I would get off the my tube and was so happy I didn't get my hair wet the whole way so I got off and had a big drop off and actually scared me and of course got my hair wet. Long story short I know a guy that died on this same river evidently. This river has many drop offs and they think he got in one and got disoriented and drown, it was so sad who would of thought u could drown in a river. PLEASE be careful always remember to be cautious. So proud of u for being so cautious already. GOD BLESS❤
My oven takes too much propane so I do the same thing but I do it 12 14 inch cast iron skillet with foil on top and I can bake at extremely low temperatures over a long time it's like oven cooking but way less propane
Emma I have to say you have found yourself a lot of nice and beautiful places to see and visit so far. As one of your views I'd like to say I'm proud of you for living your dream. Keep going Emma Great Video 👍 stay safe and will see you soon in your next video
Beautiful views! I'm glad that after your rough start you're finding the flow, so to speak!
Bacon and butternut squash is really good ALSO
bloody awesome video and glad to see you enjoy riding the bike as well also great music in your videos keep them coming take care there from Australia
My morning routine is coffee and then to decide whether I will eat that day or not these days I don't need to eat very much if at all
I'm so glad you are finally enjoying what you put all your efforts into! I have been in a camper for 3"years...my oven I couldn't do without..have even done 15 lb turkeys in it..just keep the grease removed or it will catch on fire...I'm thinking about a bus now!
I am proud of you and envious of what you have been doing. Looking forward to your next vlog.
For mice, get a packet of those foo foo dryer tissues used to make your clothes smell good and be softer and place them where mice go or will have to go to get to you (mouse holes and especially entrance points). Use them to protect your bus wiring as well. They work ! Store your mouse food in glass containers.
Looked like strong current
Love seeing our swimsuit model bouncing around in a swimsuit but sure did worry you were going to be swept downstream lol. Glad common sense prevailed and you're safe. Spectacular beauty in that part of the country. I'd stay till winter snow falls! Thanks for the hike.
You're so fortunate to have your Monkey, Emma. They are so hard to find ! Be safe & have fun M' lady ...☺☺☺.
Great video Emma!
Good you're doing your daily cold dips! But please be careful! Always leave a note in your bus incase anything happens so if anyone starts looking for you they find it! Also rivers are always dangerous generally and the deeper they are that goes up much more so. Throw a leaf or dry stick in that floats, if the leaf/stick goes past faster than you can swim, then don't get in as you'll get swept down stream! (as a minimum guage!)
Also if the water is breaking on the top and/or swirling like it was there (like mini rapids) that indicates multiple currents under the surface which could sweep you away or drag you under! (so don't risk it) and.. best to have an anker line tied securely to a solid tree or a stake in the ground that's solid, then if you lose footing and get swept down river or under, you can hopefully pull yourself out safely.. (always good to let someone know where you're going through it that's an option just incase!) You only get to make one mistake, so have a back up!
That aside the food looks amazing you've been making and you're clearly having lots of fun which is great! Have a great week!
Cheers from London 👍😎🏴
There is a spot,,further up the main road you're on,,,and up a certain hill,,,where ,,in the right spot you can look west and see Les Tois Tetons and to the east you can see the Wind Rivers. It's kinda glorious! Get bear spray,,learn how to use it. Watch for Grizzlies. They can and occasionally do eat touroids. Be careful. You definitely wised up by not jumping in the river
I just wish there was a carbon fiber sideshell that I could attach to a schooly that would give it a futuristic look if somebody could make a mold I'm sure that it would bless them in the end and the beginning even
Looks like was nice few days and hella hike at tetons. And yeah, spruce bud worm, they suck, definite killer of trees...
The river was beautiful but it was fast moving. You made the right choice to stay near the shore.
Looks beautiful and peaceful.
I wouldn't mind swimming with you
Yeah, what a view.😉
You should buy a tea kettle the water will heat up faster and you won't use up as much propane
Great video!! Yes, be careful!!! Don't go jumping into fast moving water
Please 🙏🙏
Question just jumping into and trust not to drown can only be told by those that didn't,or use safety line.
Due to your video I just used the little oven in my travel trailer, in which I live, for the first time ever. I made pizza from a slice of French bread, ketchup, cheese and sliced mushroom. I expected it to be kind of sad lol and bad but it was a lot better than I expected. ty 👍.
Always assume the current is worse than it looks. Rivers are nothing to fool around with. Keep up the great content.
Great fun 2 wheels on the open road, good call to cover your elbows/knees as vulnerable areas, especially on a crumbly gravel road even at any speed but also tarmac, just saying but hope you don’t ever come off your motorbike tho👍
The video was so nice, so crisp and saturated with color. You do a good job keeping focus. Get yourself a pair of Keen Newport H2 sandals.
To jump into moving water you must wear a life vest, lie in the water face up & feet down stream, have your rafting buddies nearby to save you or use your feet to deflect off rocks to get to the side where current is less and save yourself.
that constant smile while riding your bike says it all 😀
Walk the bank first know where the current will take you before you enter. Plan your exit points. Have a few extras in case you miss the first one.
Looks like you're having a blast! Live like you love it, and want to keep doing it.
I thoroughly enjoyed your mouse hunt! I had mice in my SUV - mine liked to gnaw on toilet paper and ramen. Also scared one off from under the hood. This was at my last campsite, and my only experience with mice after 2 yrs. of being on the road. Just lucky I guess. Oh, I've heard (but never tried) peppermint oil deters them. A cat (mouser) would work too. ;-)
Birbie looks great!
You are really amazing you are the most beautiful woman on the planet it is so refreshing to see someone with such a positive optimistic attitude thank you for the video you have made my day
I love your videos all the places that you go are so beautiful
Thank you for sharing. I look forward to watching your updates. You've been rocking the swim suits.:)
Thank you for the beautiful hike!
I just started following you because of the Honda Monkey
I put an oven in my van and use it more than the stove aswell. Gotta love the oven
If you start having holes in your food bags, you have mice. I store mine in heavy/thick containers. A few have gnaw marks but they have not gotten in. I like sticky traps if they get in.
