On all my punches I put a round bar perpendicular to the handle about 3" down from the top. Then I give a good hit leaving a groove. This keeps my round punch from rolling off the anvil and also orients my punch. I always put the groove on top so I don't end up with an upside down mark. Got the idea from my letter and number punches. Got the inspiration from picking up my punches.
Simple tapers? Such as these I would expect that an apprentice would have to master in their first year? Its a fundamental skill required to knowledgeably move forward! Its great you put so much emphasis on basic skills that are not sexy and often just get brushed aside because I just want to make X! Loving this content, recent subscriber and keen to see more!
Awesome video! I hope maybe you can help me. Why do my tapers keep ending up hollow on the tips? I heard you quickly mention it but I dont understand what you mean. I put the noo noob as I'm sure you can see lol
If your angle is to shallow you effectively mushroom the edge over, try bringing your hammer down at 45 degrees for the first couple of blows and make sure the steel is as hot as you can get it.
Nice work. Great to see basic skills shown. :)
