It is hands down one of the best series that HBO has ever produced, only the wire and the soprano’s are close to it. I never served in the military but because of my job I worked with many retired military personnel from every branch. Most were hard working dedicated people who had survived horrible wars. The stories that they told me were private so I can’t repeat, but almost everyone had a ( Sobel ) in their past . We would laugh for days at their actions that were destined for failure, years later I had to work for someone very similar to Sobel . When he eventually messed up and had no one to blame, he was sent to the ( punishment job ) a position that no supervisor wanted .

When the episode jumps back to the beginning of Easy Company's training...that is not basic training, but is the start of their Paratrooper training. Camp Toccoa was where the 506th Parachute Regiment was formed, and all the men had gone through at least the standard basic training course...which I believe was 12 weeks early on in the war. Little known fun fact...after graduating college Winters enlisted in the Army months before Pearl Harbor, completed his training and remained at the same camp to train other men that were drafted or enlisted after him. In April of 1942 he was selected to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS), and after becoming an officer in July, Winters volunteered to be a Paratrooper.
The Paratroopers were pretty much the most elite unit in the US Military when this series starts in 1942. It was an all volunteer force, had the highest physical fitness standards, and were the most highly trained troops early on in the war. Later on, more highly trained and elite units would be formed that were more like commandos...such as the Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) or Marine Raiders or the joint Canadian/US "Devil's Brigade". So Sobel training the men as hard as he did was actually a very good thing, even to the lengths of teaching them how to go without water for long periods...which is what they would have to endure in field in real life anyway. The men of Easy Company would give great credit to Sobel later on for how well he prepared them to be involved in the war.

Lt Winters was on his third pass through 'basic' - he had first entered as an enlisted man in an infantry intake, then been retained to assist in training the next intake (much as Captain Sobel was diverted to train new parachutists) then volunteered for paratroop training where he had the rank of Lt.
His friend Lt Nixon (the S4) was an officer graduate from Wset Point, and a volunteer to the the PIR by this more conventional command path.
Coming from the ranks gives Winters a different perspective on his men, than is seen in some of the other officers, and his calm competence earned the trust and respect of his men.

Hi Toni, David, i'm the last one off the boat and out of the plane but I finally made it to this reaction. Figured today was a good day to start since it's Remembrance Day here in Canada.
As I'm watching this HBO has a marathon of this on. I know it's hard to take an actor especially one like David Schwimmer that you identify so well from a certain roll , comedy and see them doing a serious role .
I remember watching this originally when it started coming out with somebody and us going Ross with this look on our faces, cause we could only see him as Ross.
Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks like Mel Gibson knew how to tell a story not about war but about the men, show you who they were and what they endured and how it changed them. Human stories.
Continuing on. These reactions show the impact series and movies like this have. To our vets.

For what it's worth, the kind of training Sobel put Easy Company through is similar to the kind of training used for elite units today; and that kind of harassment training is used today because it works. Say what you will about Sobel as a field commander, he was a pretty good training officer.

"Currahee" is a Cherokee word that means "stands alone". It was the name of the mountain in Toccoa, Georgia, and, the motto of the 101st ABD. Unlike "Saving Private Ryan", this is all the truth, as it happened. It was based on historian Stephen Ambrose's book "Band of Brothers", which was itself written based on extensive research, and, exhaustive interviews with the surviving members, at the time, of E Company. At the time this was filmed, it was the most expensive production ever made for TV, with a total budget of $120 million

Other than the the interviews, not much of this series is “historical truth.” Many of the battle scenes are combinations of battles or condensed versions of battles over multiple days. In interviews some of the soldiers have commented that they did not participate or participated in different ways. This was done primarily for story telling reasons. It is still a very accurate portrayal of what the men went through. Probably still the most accurate put to screen.

This is pretty much the real deal. Private Ryan, though portraying much of the conditions of D-Day accurately, is largely fiction. Those older vets speaking at the beginning were actual members of E Company 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment upon whom the non-fiction book by the same name was based.
First, recognize that these men were jumping behind enemy lines to help support those who were landing on the beaches. If you don’t plan to jump behind enemy lines, you don’t need to jump.

Being a naive 18 year old, I asked if a private could afford $80 a month. The guy laughed at me and said "no, you get paid $80 a month extra". I couldn't believe they were going to PAY me to jump out of an airplane! By the time I got on Jump status, it was $110 a month.

All these men have already been through basic training and have volunteered for the airborne. Most of the officers and NCOs have been in the army for at least a couple of years. They can quit or be wash-out at any time up to deployment, and sent back to their original army unit. For every 5000 men who volunteered for Airborne, only 1800 would pass training. It was Sobel's job to eliminate more than half his men, though most would eliminate themselves ( usually by a refusal to jump at the door of the plane ).

But hating him...the men trained harder, by taking away their passes...they learned that combat and duty took priority over personal life, by being an incompetent C.O....they learned to depend on one another. He tried to tear them down....but they learned to pick each other up 💪🤜🤛🤝

When done you need to watch We Stand Alone Together which is the interviews you see but all of them.
There’s a bunch of cameos in this series. Tom Hanks had two visual and one audio cameo in the series.
This is the first part of D-Day, the airborne landed a couple hours before the beach landings. Saving Private Ryan takes place at the beach landings. It is interesting to see how the two compare.
If you want a cool piece of history, look up General Eisenhower’s letter he wrote in case of D-Day failing… it’s the sign of a true leader.

You may not be able to take Schwimmer seriously, but he was really the big name on the show at that time. Ron Livingston made Office Space a few years earlier, but he really wasn't a star. Other stars came out of the show, or became stars later on like Damien Lewis, Michael Fassbender, Tom Hardy, James McAvoy, Donnie Whalberg, Simon Pegg, etc. However, Schwimmer was really the one that gave the name for HBO to take the risk to make the show.
Also, its not about the amount of people that did the mutiny, it was about the rank. All of them were NCO's (non-commissioned officers). NCO'S are essentially the glue guys in a company. They are kind of considered the backbone of infantry divisions. You have all your NCO's resigning in protest over an inept company commander, its kind of a huge deal.
It's also important to note that while NCO's are in positions of unofficial leadership over the regular enlisted soldier, they are not officers like Winters or Sobel, so they can never actually take command of the company. Somebody who knows more than me is going to have to confirm or correct the following: While there are leading officers in the platoon, I think NCO's can officially lead a platoon.

Wow, I JUST discovered this channel with the Good Will Hunting reaction and the next video to pop up is for my favorite series. Nice! Yes, it's a real story and the character names are real people and their experiences. It's based off a book written about their lives from the accounts of the soldiers themselves. If you're getting emotional in episode 1 then you're in for a ride. Saving Private Ryan is more in your face with the horrors of war but is a great movie. It however isn't a true story but very loosely based on a similar event.
Band of Brothers on the other hand is much closer to real events though they of course make the occasional mistake (which is to be expected). One such mistake, without spoilers, is the text at the end of episode 3. Again, without spoiling it I'll tell you that the year is wrong. They went off of the info they had at the time but the event they reference actually happened many, many years later. They just didn't know at the time of making this. You guys may've already seen that episode if these are getting released late but I thought I'd let you know now.
But this show is wonderful and I highly suggest sticking with it even though it can get tough sometimes. I was already interested in WWII before watching this but this made me have so much more appreciation for the soldiers that fought in this war. I wonder about the justification for a lot of war but this is one of the last ones I think was actually "good". But of course war is still horrible and so many people's lives changed forever because of this. I don't think we should ever forget the events that lead to this as some people are in danger of repeating those same mistakes today. Learn from our history, folks!

    • @popculturallychallenged
      @popculturallychallenged  Год назад +1

Welcome to the channel! So far this seems like it's going to be very intense. Toni has already mentioned that she's worried that she's not going to be able to sit through all of them. I'm hoping to do Saving Private Ryan soon but I'm not sure I want to put her through this and that at the same time. I may try to put more comedies on the channel for our Thursday movies while we're doing this show. 😃

    • @MysterClark
      @MysterClark Год назад

@@popculturallychallenged Yeah, you might need a bit uplifting in between. If you haven't already, the next couple episodes might be more of a sign if she's ready for Saving Private Ryan. Still not trying to give spoilers or anything but if she's squeamish about war scenes then she's probably not going to make it through the first scene of Ryan. I know you guys mentioned seeing 1917 but I haven't seen it (yet) so I couldn't compare the two of them for you.
In my opinion though, Band of Brothers is realistic but not super graphic outside of a couple of things. Some war movies try to be as gore-filled as they possibly can but it's more about the drama and the story of the soldiers. Very excited to see the reactions though.

I say this every time because it's the honest truth. This is in some ways my favorite episode, perhaps because of the innocence. Capt. Sobel and Army noodles with ketchup were their most pressing threats, while knowing what horror lies ahead of them. Be prepared to learn, laugh, grow and suffer with these characters. Currahee! ♠
P.S. David Schwimmer was type casted for this roll specifically because he wasn't going to be taken seriously, but was still strict and a prick. He actually has a very sad life story. I would recommend you watch Stephen King's "Apt Pupil" as well. This isn't a TV show, it's a 12 hour "Saving Private Ryan," and I can't wait for you to see that. Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg weren't satisfied yet.

Just my interpretation.

Sobel is the epitome of a bad leader. His insecurity shows through his abusive manner. He lacks what it takes to be an effective leader, so he compensates by being overly strict. Kinda like a wall between his men and his weaknesses. I've seen it before; I used to train officers. Plus, Sobel don't know squat about being an infantry officer. Can't even read a map...lol
Colonel Sink had no choice but to get rid of Sobel. His NCO's -- and by extension the men -- had no faith in their company commander. That's a recipe for disaster.
Band of Brothers is an excellent portrayal of warfare. I'd say the best on-screen portrayal to date. And in my humble opinion, Saving Pvt Ryan is ridiculous.
