Only James Mason reads the text with all its proper nuances. What colorful imagery! I still do not know what Poe intended, but subconsciously feel, rather than consciously grasp its meaning. The old l.p. disc that featured "Silence" also had Mason reading, better than anyone else since, "The Tell-Tale Heart."
James Mason, although not the only one, has a magnificent voice for reading Poe. Although Poe wrote in a kind of poetic prose, this particular piece is one of the first prose poems in literature. Mason has read other Poe tales like Imp of the Perverse and Shadow but they mostly don't seem to be on YT, although Tell Tale Heart is. But YT has lots and lots of Poe readings, animations, films, and more.
How can added non specific music [-Unsilence] help a verbal story ? Will I need music of my choosing when I open his book beside me? And a further question ; Might the visuals be needed ? At least the eyes can be shut
The decision to attach a very poor, intrusive music track to Mason's reading was ill-advised. It's bad enough to gild the lily, but to apply a coating of dreck is an act of vandalism.
The great late James Mason. Played the evil assistant to Barlow the nosferatu looking vampire in Salem's Lot. The original made for TV mini series from the 70s. Directed by Tobe Hooper of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We all know the author, Stephen King.

But to fans of legendary theater organist Buddy Cole, his accompaniment to Mason's masterful reading is pure bliss!

Very good miniseries. Tobe Hooper also directed an adaptation of "Dance of The Dead" by Richard Matheson for the first season of Masters of Horror.
