Reality is often more absurd than fiction.
Another way to think about this is that things could have ended in an all out nuclear war and nobody would have ever known it was triggered by a bear. Each side would assume the other one started the attack. There is no guarantee it may still happen.
No one would ever know if that officer didn’t stop them…we would all be living out “the Walking Dead”

That's even worse than the time in 1983 when the Soviet nuclear early warning system reported a US space program launch as nuclear missiles and it came down to the decision of one engineer at the soviet command center to not launch nukes in retaliation.

the amount of times a nuke has almost been set off is way way too much.
Also one one time during the Cuban missive crisis when Vasili Arkhipov a soviet submarine commander refused to launch nukes even when two of the other commanders insisted on doing on. That’s two times when a Soviet refused to let the world burn!
