One of my all-time favorite bands. Kieren White did a solo album in 1975. The Repertoire release in 1993 published Kirien Whites phone # in the liner notes. So....I called him to ask if he had any future projects in music. He was by then a truck-driver in Portland Oregon area. He said he was doing some music for his church, but pretty much out of the biz. He did however ask the mail order company that I found all the Steamhammer CD releases. I gave him the phone # and he asked if they had released "Open Door' his solo. Yes-they had. We chatted for 10-15 minutes. He thanked me for my interest. And then I learned he had passed away from cancer shortly afgter our talk. They do have some live stuff on youtube from German TV.
I was lucky enough to see Steamhammer live in concert several times in Hamburg, Germany between 1969 - 1972. And not a single album could even come close to there magic of the live performings of this great great band.
Beautiful band, one of my favourite ever. Been listening to them since I was a kid and never got tired.
Martin Pugh also ended up playing guitar for Armageddon, Keith Relf's heavy band with Bobby Caldwell (Captain Beyond ) and Louis Cennamo (bass player for Renaissance and Steamhammer). Going to check out these Steamhammer jams pronto.
Great - just found this! Like Martin Pugh, I was born in Torquay (Very South of UK) and followed his first band the Package Deal. He was sensational at 16/17 years old. Glad he has had the full SOT treatment with this great band Steamhammer
Never heard of them, but I got instantly intrigued when you mentioned a 16 minute "Another Traveling Tune". So I found it and started listening. I couldn't turn it off! What a great track. I shall investigate this band further. Thanks man!
He got my attention when he mentioned Traffic. ;)
Repertoire's 2cd Anthology has almost all of those album tracks. Great collection.
Repertoire raised us as rockers..
+ a few for extra's
"Mountains" is a an absolute classic. Leader of the Ring so early 70's you can smell it.
Leader of the Ring is like hippies sitting around a camp fire late at night and singing to the moon. Calming & wonderful.
Waiting for this Pete! Martin Pugh is an outstanding guitarist. But Keiran White is the brain of their music, very talented guy.
My ranking:
1.MkII ( For me this album is an incredible combination of blues, folk, jazz and rock with fantastic songwriting)
2.Mountains
3.Steamhmmer (Reflections)
4.Speech
I agree, MKII is definitely the one I enjoy most.
Nice call! "Passing Through" one of my fave tracks, reminds me of early Tull. Great stuff.
Great recommendation once again Pete! Always enjoying discovering bands to delve into.
Passing Through from MK2 is a classic, been a favourite of mine first heard on Fill You Head With Rock sampler. Mountains my favourite album, very underrated, saw them live around this time, great live band, Martin Pugh, great guitar player, I Wouldn't Have Thought which opens up the Mountains album, features a fantastic solo, man, that guitar is crying, a pity they couldn't stay together after that album, glad you mentioned them Pete, thank you.
Thanks again Pete for all the music you share, another add to my ever growing list of bands to check out.
Thank you for Ranking the Studio Albums: Steamhammer 🎤🎸🎵🥁
Got to buy that Sea of Tranquility t shirt you were wearing, looks freaking beautiful.
Thank you Pete for your reviews and work. As pointed out after this came Armageddon between the two bands was a project called Axis. Keith Relf was also involved . They recorded in studio and did a few live gigs. Then came to the US and became Armageddon.
Thanks for covering these more obscure bands. Great stuff thanks.
Thanks Pete !! Have to agree Mountains is a great album, especially Hold That Train and Ridin' On The L & N both outstanding tracks.
Love that first Steamhammer album. Going to have to give Mountain a listen. Thanks Pete.
Flutist/Saxophonist Steve Jolliffe joined Tangerine Dream in 1978 for "Cyclone" .
Great band, I discovered them when I worked in a record shop in the early 90’s.
You got me again PETE / lol. I’ll check it out ! Thank you 👍💯
The only album of theirs that I have is "Mountains", which I really like and has GREAT artwork! Also, it was produced by Martin Birch... I didn't realize that until just now when I looked. Thanks for the video, Pete!
Sounds like an interesting band , especially the second album mentioned . Love really long songs
Another band for me to check out. My vinyl copy of "Angel" came in the post today thanks to your best album opener show. I've already posted it on my new opinionatedvinyls Instagram page along with a shout out to sea of tranquility 👍
Totally agree with you...especially Mountain being their best followed very closely by Speech. Great band, sadly underrated.
I listened to their Reflections album for the first time the other day, almost by accident and it immediately put me in mind of the first Jethro Tull album. Like it.
Steamhammer, Jethro Tull & early Atomic Rooster w/ Blodwyn Pig make a great playlist + even Mick Abrahams bands first 2 albums.
New to me. Love another travelling tune. Have you heard of a band called Sweet smoke album called just a poke from 1970 killer jamming on that album too.
I have not!
Interesting Freddie King connection no better place to learn your craft than doing an apprenticeship with one of the blues greats. Tommy Bolin did the same thing spending time in Albert Kings band.
The Gregorian chants heard on the second track from Speech are from Keith Relf and his sister Jane. Reminisced from his Yardbird days. Have to mention the performance from drummer Mick Bradley on this album, which really is a tour de force. Sadly he would soon be gone from Leukemia at the young age of 25 before the album was even released. Not a popular opinion for sure, but I actually prefer this album over the slicker more polished Armageddon record who 3 out of the 4 were later involved in.
1 Mountain
2 mk 2
3 Steamhammer
4 Speech
Please rank the studio albums of Area (the wonderful italian jazz-fusion band). =)
I'm only familiar with their first 3 albums...which are great.
@@seaoftranquilityprog The rest of the discography is good but more adventurous and experimental.
Wow freddy king back Up band.
I'll check this band out but right now I just discovered Damien.
Killer band!!
Steamhammer never heard of them should listen to them
Mountains is a classic
Is the Ritchie Kotzen (upper left) any good?
He may be the most talented guy on the planet. Writes all his stuff, records it, produces it and plays multiple instruments. His guitar playing and singing (sounds like a cross between Chris Cornell and Oli Brown) are stellar.
His solo albums can be all over the place, from jazzy numbers to hard rock songs back-to-back. His band The Winery Dogs, with Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan, is much more focused AOR and hard rock fair.
Pete! Request! Please rank the albums of the Byrds and the Strawbs!😁👍
I only have compilations on both...sorry.
Pete, how about ranking Allan Holdsworth, Banco of PFM?
The reason you threw in the F bomb there is because you just got done listening to Speech, which is a very intense and thrilling ride! And as I know you're a Monster movier fan, tell me the end of the song "Telegram" doesn't sound like Godzilla thumping along Tokyo looking for it's next prey. 😁
Haha! Good point!!
Fjols !
Get the soap out.lol
Martin Pugh remember him on argent circus lp good guitar licks . Thanks
can you find time to rank the albums of the great band "AGALLOCH"
Thanks for this nice video 'I have only the album "SPEECH"
love this album !
I've only heard one of their albums sadly...
@@seaoftranquilityprog you really should check out the Agalloch discography
hey pete off topic how about a gangster movie show
To be honest, I have enough to do here on the channel without getting further into different film shows...as much as I love them.
F-bomb........most of us get a case of tourettes from time to time
I wanna be, your Steamhammer! Why don't you call my name? Put your mind at rest
All music gives mountains two stars and the rest of the albums four stars
Guess they don't hear 'em how I do!
No Mannheim, no Steamhammer.
I love Steamhammer.....what i would give to go back and get out of this schittehole culture
The track with the drum solo is awful
