Before Psycho, Peeping Tom, and Repulsion, there was Diabolique. This thriller from Henri‑Georges Clouzot, which shocked audiences in Europe and the U.S., is the story of two women-the fragile wife and the willful mistress of the sadistic headmaster of a boys' boarding school-who hatch a daring revenge plot. With its unprecedented narrative twists and terrifying images, Diabolique is a heart-grabbing benchmark in horror filmmaking, featuring outstanding performances by Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, and Paul Meurisse.
A man: "My daughter watched Les Diaboliques and now she won't take a bath. Then she watched Psycho and now she won't take a shower. What do I do with her?"
Hitchcock's response: "Send her to the dry cleaners."
Hitchcock retells this story in his interview with Dick Cavett on the latter's show, towards the second half.
Tell her you will hose her off in the front yard ...or instruct her on a thorough sponge bath.
Yes,I read about that.Great reply.Of course, you will only get that joke ,if you saw the movie.
just like to point out, Diabolique (1955) is the 4th top rated Horror movies of all time on IMDB behind The Shining, Alien, and Psycho.
Aliens: Am I a joke to you?
@@layicorn Aliens isn't much a horror movie, it has elements of horror though.
@@elcomp4211 some will say neither is this French Movie
I find IMDB rather shallow a lot of the time. I use it to find out technical details, dates of production, etc. but anything else like 'top lists', plot summaries and reviews seem to be like something out of a glossy film magazine.

Great film! That one scene chilled me to my core. Véra's reaction was blood-curdling. Loved Simone as well throughout.
0:30 It's not the good translation. She says "God don't like monsters." instead of "I".
What an ending. You can see why Hitchcock was influenced by this film when he directed Psycho.
This and Rosemary's Baby remain the two scariest films I have ever seen.
Great choices. The Shining will be there too somewhere??
I audibly gasped at that twist ending, holy shit!
This movie is one of the best movies I have ever watched. It's a perfect thriller, but I wish I could understand French so I didn't have to read those subtitles.
Agreed. Shame we can't understand French
True.I can speak or read French, either.
wow i just watched this and im so glad that i did!!! it was a little slow in the beginning but once things start rolling, it doesn't stop lol the ending was so good
Hitchcock even stole the marketing campaign of this movie.
This may be my favorite Criterion, tied with "M"
هل أنت بخير يا صديقي بعد 11 سنه
Can anyone explain the scene where Nicole Horner is walking down the hallway after saying shes going to leave? The lights go out and is seems like a child voice is saying something. Or was it just her voice?
Je viens de voir ce filme pour la 4ème fois! 😬
I know I would love this film but I don't have the mental energy to watch it. I saw the director's "The Wages of Fear" back in 2009 and loved it.
This movie is Awesome! Chilling!
Why is it not called "The Diabolicals" in English?
Je vois ce film tous les soirs dans mon travail, il n'y a aucun moyen de l'oublier ... !!
Personally, I'd put it in the Top 2 of those 4.
I'd give it all three top three places.
I will this is a MASTERPIECE in pure terror! And still trying to figure out the end? I mean is the headmistress a ghost??
I’m about to watch this movie for the first time
did you like it?
@@behemoth5344 yes
Looking forward to watching and crituing the movie
I love this movie. I had it on DVR, but now I have no DVR. I might buy the DVR.
Seriously no one made a comment for this movie?

no one under 16 years old :P
i need help for the title of a movie, i'm searching an old movie, in color. It was about girl(not a kid) who was living with her old mom or aunt, she had a boyfriend. And the girl discovered something about the mom, and then her mom killed her. In their house they had rabbits. The end of the movie was quite shocking, the boy is seen gettin into the yard and there the mom there playing the piano with a psicopatic smile, and behind her there is a mannequin, but it's the dead girl. i don't remember anything else cause i was a kid when i saw it and it was really shocking for me, and now i'm searching the movie
let me know if you find it because that sounds good!
Have you found it yet? This seems very interesting.
what was the black and white movie where a middle aged guy named mortimer lived with two older women, and discovered that they hid dead people inside the walls?
Alfred Hitchcock mmm no, in this case the old woman was the killer of her daughter or niece
Alfred Hitchcock Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)
I just now heard of this movie. Looks better, more ghoulish than psycho! just now read the summary. movie is well before my time.
and "the Truth" by Clouzot ?
diabolique was better than psycho,tho.
Interesting.
Equal to,hitchkock if not better!
Lousy trailer but such a good film. Hitchcock wanted to do it, but Clouzot beat him to it.
Mommy!
diabolique.
French horror movie
Yeah, the screenplay of the remake was stinky!
