Suggest that the relevant ministries get their internal audit staff to do surprise checks on the park and recreation enforcement officers to ensure they are doing their jobs and not hiding somewhere to have group coffee chat.

      Agree with you totally. The littering is getting worse over the years. I live in one of the dirtiest heartland. Complaints and calls to town council and relevant ministries DO NOT yield any active action. When the relevant authority deploy at least 1 staff to look out for these culprits, then they could tell residents that they r encountering manpower shortage. There isn't sight of even One officer, so I don't understand the reason for shortage of manpower? Should generate good income for the government with the amount of litter around. Sigh.... so much about Singapore progressing... what an irony!

    • @anchored555

      Naufal Rafi To ensure SG can maintain high standards of cleanliness, hiring more cleaners is only part of the solution. Education is key. People, local and foreign, young and old, need to be re-educated on littering and proper public toilet use. Personal habits on littering and toileting can differ from country to country. I am Singaporean, and proud to say I don’t litter, and even carry my rubbish with me till I can find a bin. Not from fear of fines, but because it’s the responsible thing to do. However, not everyone feels this way. For such people, education is necessary, and eventually fines if they still don’t comply. Education is also necessary for letting everyone, especially newcomers, know what is acceptable practice in using our public toilets. For example, when toileting, westerners like to sit, but many Asians prefer to squat. Since there are no squatting toilets in the West, many Asians squat on their toilet seats, which dirties them for those who sit, and annoys them. I’ve seen signs in NZ in Chinese, Japanese and Korean reminding users not to squat on toilet seats. Similarly, in SG, there is a relatively recent imported phenomenon of used TP being dumped into waste bins beside the toilet bowl instead of being flushed away. (Never saw this in SG when I was younger.) This is unhygienic and an eyesore, but it is a common practice in countries where the septic tank system cannot cope with TP. Our toilets here are absolutely able to handle the TP, so there is no excuse for not throwing soiled TP in the toilet bowl and flushing it away, but foreigners who come here may not know that and continue old habits from home. The solution is gentle reminders in public toilets to dispose of used TP in the toilet bowl and flush it away. Not keeping quiet because of PCness, till waste-bins overflowing with soiled TP inside public toilet cubicles become the new norm in SG.

    As a Singaporean I always found it perplexing how Japanese would describe our country as 'clean'.. well public toilets in CBD area are usually acceptable, but once you get to the heartlands or worse still the hawker centers and kopitiams lets not talk about it... Unfortunately there is much more Singaporeans can do in terms of civic-mindedness and hygiene compared to Japan. We are definitely a 'cleaned' country and not really 'clean'.

      @anchored555 Год назад +1

      No need to self-flagellate. Neither SG nor Japan is perfectly clean, although we are better than most. Japan has the advantage of having a very homogeneous society so standards on appropriate behaviour regarding littering, cleanliness etc are held in common. By contrast, Singapore has a very cosmopolitan society with many foreigners from all over the world. Personal habits regarding littering and use of public toilets do differ depending on age, background and where people come from. This may explain why in recent years, the problem of littering and dirty public toilets has gotten worse. The solution is not only recruiting more cleaners, but re-educating everyone, local and foreign, on the importance of not littering, and how to keep public toilets clean. For the recalcitrant, they should be fined to motivate them to learn better habits.

    Singapore is not as clean as it should be. I am Singaporean, and proud to say I don’t litter - not because of the fine, but because it’s the right thing to do. I carry my rubbish with me till I can find a bin, so I don’t understand those who litter. Time to re-educate everyone (local and foreign, young and old) on the importance of binning their litter if they want to enjoy a clean environment. We shouldn’t be relying only on armies of paid cleaners to clean up after us. In the 65 years I’ve lived in SG, I’ve also noticed a new public toilet phenomenon in recent years - used TP being thrown into waste bins beside the toilet bowl, instead of into the toilet bowl and flushed away. Needless to say, this is an eyesore as well as unhygienic. This practice is common in countries (those who travel will know which countries) where the septic tank cannot cope with TP and so users typically throw soiled TP into a separate waste bin next to the toilet bowl. Our toilets can absolutely handle TP so there’s no excuse not to flush soiled TP away. Going by how increasingly common this “soiled TP in waste-bin” phenomenon has become in recent years (never saw this when I was younger), it can be deduced that many of these public toilet users are not locals. In the same vein, I wonder how much of the litter we increasingly find on our streets is from non-locals. For sure, there are plenty of local litterbugs too. But it bears remembering that personal habits on littering and toileting can differ from country to country. For example, when it comes to toilets, westerners like to sit but many Asians prefer to squat. When I was in NZ recently, I sometimes saw signs in Chinese, Japanese and Korean not to squat on the toilet seats because that dirties the seats for those who sit. Maybe it’s time to have signs in our public toilets on flushing away used TP.

I know what I am saying next may sound a bit strong and trigger strong reactions from some SG viewers but I really think that as a first world country, we should be ashamed of ourselves for being so dirty😭😡! Speaking of keeping clean, perhaps it's time our govt restart the keep clean campaign (done during 1970-80s) and this time, jippun lang aka Ghib san can become the campaign ambassador (lol)😅. This awesome! Thank you to the Japanese community for doing what you did. We Singapore is not as clear as it used to be, even the airport is that way too. I guess us locals are so busy with our live these days dont bother about where we leave and throw things. Education is important to instil this, sadly there are no more civil lesson in school anymore. Our school should arrange cleaning event for student several time a year. Kudo! To the cleaner keeping Singapore clean 🙂👍👍

    I have always admired how Japanese managed to keep up with the cleanliness of their own country and now they are helping to clean up Singapore. Well done to all the participants for a job well done. Singapore is generally clean because we actually have a lot of cleaners to clean up. Cannot imagine if we don't have any cleaners to do the dirty jobs. We can find trash bins everywhere but we still see irresponsible people discarding their trash at will.

    Some thrash like bottles and cans may become breeding ground for bug pests like mosquitos are often found in our lush greeneries. That adds to the difficulty of preventing dengue outbreaks.

    Chinatown station has dirty toilet due to heavy user, they do clean it just so happen that you are there at the time no want was there. The people park complex walkway and the food center and toilet are the dirtiest,

    After a whole generation of educating the public, people still litter and expect cleaners to pick up after them. While rubbish may get washed up at the beaches, the public spaces would have been much cleaner if everyone just do their little bit and use the rubbish bins.
