Watching them was always like watching a ballet on ice. No one could match their grace and passion. When I see what ice dancing has become with lots of fancy lifts and spins, it makes me want to cry. This truly was the golden age of ice skating and ice dancing.
I feel the same way about ice dancing. When they got rid of the compulsory dances, it was the last straw. It was the end for me. Its hard for me to watch it now. Its no longer ice dancing :(
Sophia B I completely agree! It was bad enough with the theatrical turn ice dancing took, away from its ballroom roots. The costuming, vocal music and "elements" such as spins & lifts, now required due to the STUPID new scoring system! When the compulsory dances were dropped, that was it! I no longer watch competitive figure skating. It has lost its purity & appeal for me. Sigh.....

Oh, that was amazing. Such an under appreciated team and such a shame they peaked at the same time as so many other wonderful teams. Because this, to me, is in no way a bronze-medal winning skate. This is classic, beautiful, legendary skating for which there is no high enough reward. They were phenomenal.
Artistically they were exquisite. But technically both their OD and FD were very noticeably lacking in content. I would've had them in 4th in the blues compulsory dance (Usova's choctaws were seriously bad), 4th in the OD behind K&P, G&P, and M&L (all 3 of these teams had far more ambitious ODs in terms of content) and 3rd in the FD behind K&P and G&P. If U&Z had skated more ambitious programs with greater content, I would've had them higher but they could very rarely skate such programs. The one time they did was in 1994 and look at how much their flow across the ice went down. They were beautiful performers but they were not the technical skaters that K&P or G&P were.

I used to watch ice skating when I was a teenager - and I loved it then. I have not been watching it so regularly for many years now but this performance has stayed with me since I was much younger - as one of very few, to be honest. I think it's not only beautiful, but also very moving... I still have thrills each time I watch it... Definitely one of the most memorable free dances ever...

My all-time favorite ice-dance free programm. Such smooth scating and refined choreography. I like them even more than Klimova and Ponomarenko altough they are outstanding, too.

@intldawn dont forget 94 Euroepans as well which was a crucial loss as it made the Olympic ice dance event wide open between them, the comebacking Torvill & Dean, and up and coming Gritschuk & Platov, where had they won as reigning World Champs as well they wuold have been clear favorites for the OGM.
This was back in the day when ice dancing was more interpretive and didn’t rely on music vocals to create atmosphere but it was also a time when winning was like a step increase at work . Your time would eventually come

Они должны были получить серебро! Если бы рос. ФФК подала протест, это был бы скандал покруче СЛС-2002! Французкий судья поставил К\П 5.5 за технику и 5.8 -Дюшене, у которых в ПТ было 3 ошибки! Просто смешно!

I honestly tink this should have been tied with Klimova and Pomanrenko. The Duschaneays were tight and while it might ave been due to illness Isabelle looked out of it at times. Really U and Z were amazing - artistically and such wonderful nuances.

Does it seem to anyone else that they nearly always had the misfortune of skating first in the final group, when the judges were still leaving marks at the top for their competitors? It feels like they hardly ever had the benefit of the judges saving the biggest marks for them: '91 Worlds, '92 Olympics, '93 Worlds (even though they won), '94 Olympics. Jeez, they were doubly unlucky throughout their career, it seems.

it's a sad commentary on the state of affairs that in today's russia - some 23 years later - zhulin's costume would be considered homosexual propaganda and banned by law :(

I believe that after this that the men were banned from wearing tights in ice dancing competitions. He certainly did look good in those tights.
