the wife’s voice is something i don’t see enough people talk about. there’s always been a dispute with how she sounds - the album version and the 2010 tour version of her voice as well. you can even hear him trying to figure out what sound fits her better, which i love.
This version of "The Trial" sounds like like when someone does a Let's Play of an RPG on Youube, and reads all the dialogue out loud in "different voices". haha. No, seriously though, this is brilliant. I kinda like how this was more low-key compared to the orchestrated album version. I almost kinda wish the final version stayed like this.... but then poor ol' Micheal Kamen would have been left with nothing to do.
@@anycolouryoulike8567 Israeli here. Water's a genius, even if I disagree with a lot of what he says and do. Pink Floyd was and still is the soundtrack of my life, his political views won't change it.
It just ain't the same without the orchestra. The melody & eerie instrumentals would work fine as some other song than the closing climax of the story. For the scenario in question however, it only makes sence that they upped the anti, making a bombastic, epic finalie.
AlluMan96 It's just that you're so used to hearing the final, more polished version. As for me, I'm torn. While I appreciate why the final version is so big and orchestral, part of me can't help but wish that it had stayed a funky little _Threepenny Opera_ -style piece.
AlluMan96 in this version I imagine pink hidden in a small cramped room having a mental breakdown and persecuting himself by using hand puppets (hence the trial by puppets). It's sounds scarier since it sounds a bit more crazy and isolated.
This better captures Pink's dark state of mind as he realizes just how low he's fallen. It's much less bombastic, but far more chilling in how lowkey the track is. It gives the idea that Pink has truly gone mad and is talking to himself as he 'prosecutes' his being for the crime of showing feelings.
I actually like the "Craaazyyyy" sections more in this version, with the minimal electronic beat and piano. And I'm in two minds about the Judge's voice, I like it more than the final but it feels inappropriate for the lyrics. Although I miss the orchestra from the rest of it.
I think the demos are funkier and slightly more "upbeat" actually. The version of Young Lust on the Full Immersion release is really cool. It's fun to listen to songs in the process of evolving and they play with melodies and alternate lyrics. I've been listening to variations of the album since '79 so this kind of refreshing.
In context of the album, it kind of makes sense. The Judge is (I think?) supposed to be Pink's voice of reason-this demo makes his state of mind more obvious.
I find it interesting that in both this working demo and in the final version he says "But I never wanted him to get in any trouble", but with the weird pronunciation on the first word as "B-lut". 2:49
@IN4DWIN Creepy? Depressing? No. I totatally disagree. It sounds like song you'd hear in a strange subterranean German cabaret.I love the tiny piano. I just wish this was available on the "Full Immersion" version. I went back to check and dammit it's not there. The songs adds another level of demented theatricality to the album and alleviates the overbearing gloom of the rest of the album.
Prefer this version better. It sounds like something out of Brecht. Maybe I'd like the album better if they stuck closer to these demo variations instead of making it so depressing.
why? I get that you don't like it, but...what? Crappy lyrics that eventually led to good ones? Terrible guitar tones? No 'verb?? If you're going to bother posting, tell me what it is that sucked, in your opinion, please.

i kinda like this version cause like, in the film the trial is put on like a HUGE stage production and this is like, the dress rehearsal for it
yeah it does
The Judge's voice in this version kinda sounds like a Bowie impression
Holy shit it does!

I would say the opposite. Bowie in the 70s tried to sound like roger fuckin waters. This is SO roger waters it hurts so good.
it doesn´t sound like a demo at all... it´s just a great rare version of a great song!
Shine on!
the school master seems almost identical while the other vocals sound so different
Its Jamie Davies what video games do you play on Phantom Gamer best mate.
This is scary sounding and I have no idea why. Most of the demos on this album are creepy, it's the way Waters sings
Yeah the demos sound so much more dark in tone than the finished album.
InterstellarOverdrive its because hes kind of tone deaf so its all monotone
Rick Wrights piano
Must be the minimalism. The finished version sounds like Gilbert n Sullivan on a really REALLY bad day...!

I'm starting to think the guy who wrote this was either really drunk, or high as fuck. maybe even both.
I've always thought this sounded like Grieg's "Funeral March of a Marionette", which, given the puppet theme, makes sense.
Actually, it's Gounod who wrote that piece...
Interestingly enough, this version of The Trial sounds closer to the live version performed in 1980-81. The way Roger sings the verses in particular.
The way he says "This will not do" hits me in that same way
Roger simply genius
