      Bob, thanks for your encouraging comment. I tend to take my time (some times too much time!) planning and thinking and planning some more! ;-) I hope to have the east end laid and up and running soon, but I sometimes just like going up the attic and running the trains without building things. After all, its running the trains that is the most fun bit! Glad you liked what I have been doing.

    hello, I have always wanted to build a model railway since being a kid but never really had the time or space. i now have the space and time and have been researching as much as possible best way to start. i have watched all your videos and can i say i am unbelievably impressed with what you have done. i know you have often commented on being new to certain aspects of model building. this certainly does not reflect on what you have created up to date.
    i would just like to thank you for your regular videos, updates, tutorials, advice and ease of explanation of modelling a railway from start to where you are now.
    cant wait for the next update really am looking forward to it - cheers Dave R

      Hi Dave, firstly, thank you so much for your kind words. I am humbled to know that there are guys like yourself who get so much from my videos. I try my best to explain things as clearly as possible, as I know that when I am new to something I need it explained to me step by step!
      The secret is to take your time and think things through. A lot of modellers on youtube rush ahead and do a bit of their layout and then 5 months later they are changing it and ripping it up...I try to avoid this by thinking about things carefully.
      Hope you enjoy the future updates.
      Cheers
      Dave

    Rated 99 on behalf of all your Subs, I would like to thank you very much for all your hard work and effort not only for building a really interesting layout but also for taking the time to video your work and then to edit your recording so as to make such an informative piece of work I am in the "Thinking Stage" as I did Model 4mm back in the 80's and I've got that "Itch" back again, thank you so much for your time and effort Great Work, Well Done

      Hi,
      I am really humbled by your kind words. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I am so glad you find my videos interesting, and hopefully of some use when you turn that 'itch' into building another layout. I had that same itch 4-5 years ago after stopping modelling in the early 90's. Its a wonderful hobby. I love it. My layout and the plans for it are never out of my mind, I would spend every day up the loft if my life and wife permitted. lol.
      Thanks again.

    Having been a follower of Everard Junction and a few other uk modelers I found your channel in my reccomended list only 3 days ago. While i havent started my own layout yet watching your videos (well most of them) with my 10 year old son is certainly inspiring me into taking up this hobby with him.
    I do own a dc hornby set. I think its the industrial I cant remember now but im looking to swap to dcc at the first chance i get. Keep up the good work and thank you for helping with the inspiration.

      Hi Dave, thanks so much for your comment. It makes me feel good when guys like you say I have inspired others to take up the hobby. I am humbled.
      All I can say is go for it, its a fantastic way for a dad to spend time with the kids, my dad did it with me and even my very younger daughter loves coming up the loft and watching (I wont let her touch it..yet lol) the trains.
      Its a truly amazing hobby. Hope you continue to watch my progress and please feel free to ask me anything about what I am doing. I learned from others on you tube and the channel has been an inspiration to me as well. Please feel free to subscribe and recommend my channel and share the videos with others if you think they are any good.

    Nice job Dave. The elevation on the curves looks great, really adds another level of realism. Good to see you've got a cmx, you shouldn't need your track rubbers anymore once its running. I only use mine for removing paint and glue from the rails now. Cheers

      Cheer Richard. Yeah I have had the CMX running today, surprised at how much track magic I needed to put in it! Cloth started to run dry after a while, so had to top it up.

    That upper section is going to be a great asset giving you plenty of scope , good idea with the tilting track very effective when you see the coaches running on it , the CMX is a good addition , they are very good nice to see they have put a decent coupling on now for the UK market

    Good update Dave you've made great progress there mate I've got a cmx track cleaner and goes over my aws ramps ok just leaves the shiny for a bit mine are painted black like they was in the 60s.
    Like the tilting track good idea using the foam looks great,the way I do it I use the evergreen tubes but you need to pin the track on the outside of the sleepers and not in the middle of the sleeper but there is a lot more work involved before I can start ballasting to get rid of the hump effect but does look great when done.
    I will do a video of the tilting track over all my curved viaducts and you will see there is no hump effect on the track work.
    With a layout your size Dave I would have hidden storage mate other wise you will get pissed off building trains up on scenic sections of the layout.
    Looking like one of the best layouts ever now mate look forward to seeing the next video.

    Previously I mentioned using ESU Switch Pilot Servo to control points. I am using servos which cost me $1.68 from china instead of point motors. This is a chaep option which seems to be working well. If a servo doesn't work it is very cheap to replace.

    Looking good Dave!! If you want to fit the overheads to your passing loop I've 2 ideas to solve it as I've used 2!! 1 is to cut off most of the pole & attach to retaining wall or cut the registration arms off the post & glue them to other side of another post giving you a 2 sided mast ;) I've used both as once I've tidied my layout a bit I'll video it

    Great update, you will be pleased with CMX, I have one and it does a great job of cleaning your track, let me know how you get on with the aws ramps, only just purchased them myself so let me know if the CMX passes over them ok please. Nice to see the new angles, surprised me how big you layout is, it looks far bigger from either end, sounds like you got enough to keep you busy for several years Andy

      Hi Andy, CMX ran today, goes over the AWS no problem. Leaves them shiny/tiny bit wet but this goes away. I just dabbed them with a piece of tissue to remove the fluid. Hope it doesn't remove the paint work on the AWS over time!! Dave

    Hi Dave, Great videos watch them time and time again .Just a thought for the future as Everard Junction discovered would it be an idea to increase the storage lines under the tmd before you go to far . Excellent Layout .Regards Tony G W R Model.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      Hi Tony,
      Thanks for your kind words.
      As for the TMD storage. Sadly, I cant!...the point motors from the turnouts will hang too low for me to get rolling stock under! Real shame! That would have been an ideal for storage. However, with storage lines under one of the raised parts at the end, which I highlighted in one of my recent videos (might of been this one?! lol) I think that will hold around 20 coaches. The locos will be stored at the TMD, which will be around 2.5m long. That should give me enough spare. I also have a couple of storage lines up under the town area, which store a total of 10 coaches.
      I might have some off scene storage in years to come (cut a hole through the backscene) but I don't need that yet. I planned out the layout as best as I could, but storage wasnt high on my list initially. If the worst comes to the worst I will just have to rotate my coaches and keep them in storage trays.
      Cheers.
      Dave

  • @cedarcam
    @cedarcam 9 лет назад

    Hi Dave When you come to put the overheads up on the main line you should also put one span in on the end of the non electrified loop. This is to prevent possibility of a miss routed electric loco tearing down the wires on the main line as the pantograph is de wired At the end of the span the contact wire is run out and upwards to an anchor mast. The elevation looks really good I experimented with that many years ago without much success. I hope all goes well on your layout. The problem was the transition between level and canted track needs to be very gentle. Diesel locos do not mind so much but steam locos being more rigid rocked and lost contact with the rails

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      Hi, so what you are suggesting is that I put on span at the start of the unelectricifed track, at the turnout? Then have this single mast as an anchor mast. I assume I do this at the other end of the passing loop that is non electrified also?
      Sounds like a good idea, but if you could explain it so an idiot like me can understand I would be grateful lol.
      Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement. Always keen to get advice from others who are more 'in the know' than me.
      Dave

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam 9 лет назад

      DaveClass47 Yes that is what they do It is rather hard to explain in words but I know you travel by train sometimes so you will see what I mean. I will see if I can find a photo though. So one single mast with the overheads attached in the usual way would be I would suggest a loco length after the turnout (Because we have limited space on our layouts) Then another loco length there will be a single mast with the wires fixed to it by insulators. The dead end bay platforms at Waverley may have an anchor mast you can look at. Not sure if they are electrified

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      cedarcam Hi I will have a look next time I am at Waverley. The bay platforms are now electrified, got that done a couple of years ago.
      I dont plan to use over head wires as there are none really out there that fit between my masts (15" between spacing) based on around the length of a MK4 coach and a little bit more (this is roughly how far apart they are on photos of the ECML I saw! There is no definitive measurement I can find on the distance between masts!!
      Cheers
      Dave

    • @cedarcam
      @cedarcam 9 лет назад

      DaveClass47 I can help on that question The distance between masts varies on curved track places where extra masts are needed on turnouts crossovers ect. but I have found this in a BR document. Except in areas of high wind, where lower figures apply, the maximum span length is 73 m on straight track, but this can be extended to 75 m should a subterranean obstruction be discovered during excavation of the mast foundations on site. Span length is governed mainly by the tensions in the conductors and blow-off due to wind, related to the maximum permissible deviation of the contact wire of 400 mm from the centre of the pantograph, which allows for sway of the locomotive and tolerances on adjustment of the track and overhead equipment. My layout has masts placed much closer than that to give the right effect They are about the same distance apart as yours. Also like you I have not fitted any wires to them. I may in future but they get in the way of cleaning the rails and because of that need to be robust. That makes the wire far to thick to be realistic..The real contact wires are 107 sq mm solid, grooved, hard-drawn copper. and the catenary wire that supports it 7/3.95 mm with 5 wires Aluminium, 2 wires Aluminium-coated steel. In scale that is going to be very fine wire

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      cedarcam Hi, thanks for that. However, dont you think 75m (equates to 75000mm), which in 1:76 scale is 985mm between masts would look a bit daft on a layout?!
      I have mine at 15" which is about 380mm apart, which looks right when placed next to a MK4 coach of 305mm.
      I shall keep mine at 15" apart and slightly closer on curves, maybe 12" apart. As you say, its all about what looks right!
      Wires would get in the way and look too thick.

    Dave, after watching the last year or so ,had almost forgot you had the rest of the roofspace to work on yet. I know it will take a long time yet, in part due to the size ,cost etcbut also the time you take as your attention to detail is 2nd to none. I look forward (as I'm sure all other subscribers do) to this years instalments. Good luck with the rest of the layout. ps ,don't you have the APT set or Pendolino which will look so real on the cambered bends I'm sure

    It's starting to look really great. Tho like Stuart said don't hide your lay out from your self to much. Maybe have an uncovered storage space, it would be more prototypical than creating an under ground bunker to store un needed at the time stock. So many modellers are doing it on RUclips to make there layouts look tidy but in away it detracts from places like Bescot which are on view to all. I would maybe think of having it open so you can have a different view rather than just another raised area for the sake of covering up a set of sidings given over to stock storage.
    Sorry for the essay, but keep up the good work it's going to look really great with what ever you decide to do.
    Dan.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      Hi Dan, yeah I will take your points on board. Not totally decided yet, but was going to use the raised section as a kind of post office depot area, as I have a few royal mail rolling stock items etc on the layout. Not sure yet, maybe a shallow banking/raised area. Dave

    Hi Dave, has RailMaster been behaving for you now? Your CMX is a lot cleaner than mine. Mine has had heavy use. Works nicely though. Big layout expansion program in progress. Makes me want to tear out Farland and start over. I like the banking on your curves it really gives a realistic look. Good update. You've been busy. Rob

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      Hi Rob. Thanks for your comment. Railmaster has been behaving better...it links to the elink on usually the 2nd attempt! I emailed hornby a month ago but no one has given me the courtesy of a reply as yet as to why this happens!
      I have been busy, it doesnt look like a lot of progress, but building the raised section takes time to make sure everything is level and the track runs smoothly.
      I hope to complete track laying at the end around to the start of the TMD by the spring! Dave

      DaveClass47 Hi Dave, I went through the same thing with RailMaster, I even had several conversations with Mark Lodge in customer service. He turned me over to technical assistance and they sent me a different e-Link. It didn't really help, but nice to have a backup. I just live with it. To replace RailMaster with something else as capable and easy to use would cost a considerable sum. I sometimes find that inserting the USB cable right after the 2nd set of railway sounds sometimes works. They are a bunch of amateur programmers in my opinion, or else they are too cheap to get a Microsoft certification. What's with this, "Giving an unknown publisher permission to run on this computer" business. They didn't get the license from Microsoft is what. Sorry, just me ranting, Rob

    Dave, loving the videos! Just starting my loft layout and my loft looks very similar to yours. Did you cut 2 truss's out? Phill

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  9 лет назад

      Hi, yeah I did.
      However before I did I asked a structural engineer to give me advice. I then got a joiner to tell me what to do. You have to strengthen the trusses either side of the cut one and add supports to the truss above and below the member before you cut it. With all the added supports and added beams I have to hold up the base boards I am hoping my roof is stronger than ever before!!
      The structural engineer told me that so people who live in these houses removed up to 50% of their trusses to make way for loft conversion, with no strengthening....that's going too far!! The roof is designed to take the weight of tons of snow etc, so there is a factor of safety designed into the trusses.
      Hope this helps.
      Dave

      DaveClass47 Brilliant & done
      I have watched many now & I am doing mine - just got out my old locos from the 80's in boxes.. & fired them up first time & they still work!
      the ideas I have had such as ballasting & having a slight rise on the outside rail on an express curve have been answered for me from you.
      Look forward to more.

    Hi Dave that upper section is looking good the tilt in the line dose make it look more realistic and its going to be a good size section when you have finished may I ask do you think that it runs better with the cork underlay as I'm not sure if to fit in or not. Thanks matt

      I would use it Matt, it allows you to get a 'shoulder' when you ballast and so looks better. It makes it run quieter - until you ballast and then it runs noisy again! lol
      I used 1/16" for the station area and 1/8" cork for the mainlines.

    well grate update as for Digital control of points having study the manual on elink your cross over points can be wired to one port of the accessory decoders so if you wired 4 sets of crossovers that would be 8 points . Working on that for eastnor central still on track laying just the goods yard to fix point motors to wire in. Wire the main wiring and make the right fiddle yard just the starter for ten oh and control table to mount the lap top . Before we do scenic work and last chance for scotrail coaches as go to toy fair on sunday

      Hi Peter, apologies for the delayed response about the scotrails...I have been busy with the layout and totally forgot to message you back, so really sorry. I am ok for rolling stock for now thanks.
      Yeah I know what you're saying about the accessory decoder. I have a DCC Concepts one on the way to me now. All new point work shall be wired using this.

      Alfie Bousfield Hi, its a Traction Maintenance Depot, where locos are housed when not in use, when they need serviced, refuelled etc. There is one at Edinburgh Haymarket, Old Oak Common, etc. Cheers. Dave
