10th African Conference on One Health and Biosecurity Day 1

The 10th African Conference on One Health and Biosecurity is jointly organized by the Global Emerging Pathogens Treatment Consortium (GET) and the Lagos State Ministry of Health. This year’s theme, “From Ebola to COVID-19 and Beyond: Strengthening Africa’s Capacity to Address Emerging Global Health Security Threats,” reflects the urgency of the times and the pressing need for Africa to strengthen its ability to respond to existing and emerging health threats. Over the past decade, Africa has faced several public health challenges, from the devastating Ebola outbreak to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. These crises have highlighted the vulnerabilities in our health systems but have also underscored Africa’s resilience and potential to overcome global health challenges. The lessons learned from these experiences must now be channelled into proactive measures to bolster our preparedness and response capabilities for future health emergencies. This conference is a vital platform for addressing these challenges. By bringing together experts from various sectors, we aim to assess Africa’s progress in handling health security threats and explore strategies for building more resilient, responsive, and collaborative health systems. Strengthening Africa’s health security requires investments in disease surveillance, early warning systems, research, capacity building, and regional partnerships. This is the time to ensure that our systems are prepared not only for today’s health emergencies but also for the future. As we look beyond COVID-19, our goal is to foster stronger policy frameworks, advance scientific innovation, and promote cross-border collaboration that will safeguard the health and well-being of Africa’s people. This conference will provide a space to share knowledge, develop actionable strategies, and create partnerships that are essential to reinforcing Africa’s role in global health security.
