To practice pranayamas is dangerous without outer Guru guidance unless one intuition is good and have inner Guru guidance. For example Sri Ramana Maharshi advise is that those forceful pranayamas like bhastrika kumbhaka and breath retentions are too aggressive unless ones body is strong. So he advised to just observe natural breath flow without any holding of breath and this in time result in breath to stop naturally by itself which is kevala kumbhakam, but for this certain subtle satvic state is needed, He said that to observe the origin of the thoughts which is to find out and keenly observe from where in the body does feeling of I emerge, results in same, the breath and prana is controlled by itself. That is Self ENQUIRY or mahayoga., supreme sadhana for mature seekers and totally nonviolent. Guru Om
