      @@kjm0677 The thing is that while funny it's really common, you are welding and smell something burning which is kinda normal in a shop then look down its your apron or the shirt that is on fire, you put it out and keep welding unless its a big fire. Sure you freak out the first couple of times but welders on the job have set themselves on fire enough times to just know how long they have until its too much fire. (Just don't tell OSHA!) Experience can bring some complacency with it.

    My son is a union ironworker and certified welder. I taught him to solder when he was about 8 years old, stick welding at 10 and by 12 he was TiG welding. I know how to weld and am lucky enough to buy good welding equipment but I’m no way in the same league as him. His welds are a thing of beauty. They actually asked if he wanted to teach at the union training center when he finished his apprenticeship. He was 22! He told the lead instructor he’d think about it in a few years after he got real world experience under his belt. I’m so proud of my son!

    My Grandpa was a welder for nearly 70 years. When he was helping teach me to weld (when I was 8) I told him that he was a really good welder, he looked at me and said “you can’t be called a GOOD welder until you’ve welded a train car full of wire”. Guess I’m just fair after 48 years, but I can live with that, it came from Grandpa. 😁

    • @WhatIsSanity
      @WhatIsSanity 6 месяцев назад +16

      Hah! Every person I knew that welded didn't have a high estimation of their skills either. Even my father was humbled by another mans skills and that is unusual for him.
      Those welds were really good though, so understandable why he still at 15 years after retiring hahaha. No seriously I worked on some of the steel he welded and it was factory grade or better, which was especially impressive given the dude was so old he shook like a leaf in the wind and nearly expired after a couple of hours.
      Some of those joints were so clean it looked like they were bent or cast as a single piece. First time I met a master of their trade. The old man was very nice too.

    I am a weld inspector, pipeline among other things as Sandro mentioned. The red stuff you see coming out of the weld at 10:00 is called dye penetrant, it is a specific type of oil colored with dye that draws itself into cracks and other imperfections. The surface is then cleaned and what the guy in the video is spraying is the developer, essentially aerosolised chalk, that draws the red coloring out to the surface.
    Also where I live, carnival rides are definitely subject to regular weld inspections, at least on load bearing areas and repairs.

    I’ve been welding for 48 years, one of the first things I learned was just because it’s aesthetic doesn’t mean it’s a good weld. The pretty part comes with experience, make sure you have your prep and penetration down first, then practice on making it better looking.
    Lesson 2: just because someone bought a large tool box with tools doesn’t make them a mechanic, same goes with a welder.

      @reaganharder1480 6 месяцев назад

    I learned how to MIG weld when I was on a Baja SAE team. (We had opportunities to learn TIG welding, but not enough access to a machine to get enough practice in outside of the few group classes.) At my university, we learned from people who were trained to be aircraft mechanics and they made sure your welds were ON POINT. Plus, our competition made us do weld samples for every welder who welded on the chassis, with destructive testing for one of the sample types.
    I found welding to be pretty fun and relaxing at times. The whole experience definitely made me start to look around a lot more at things that are welded together and at the quality of the welds.

    Why does welding make a crackling sound instead of a constant buzz?

    • @Skorpse
      @Skorpse 6 месяцев назад +1

      Depends on the process (TIG, MIG, etc). Stick welding sounds really rough because the arc is more "violent" and the metal coming off the stick is mostly globules, it's really messy. Check out some high fps footage of stick welding vs TIG for example. You'll quickly understand why.

    Sandro is loosening up :) He was super tense in the first few and now he seems more comfortable. That last weld was crazy cool... Mind blowing work!

    Our local carnival consists mostly of vintage rides. Very sketch welds. The last time I was there is the last time I ever go to a county fair. I was riding a spinning ride that moved you up and down in the air. One of the service doors flew open and proceeded to smack the rides being banged around so hard it was throwing sparks when it collided with the bars. The very lazy "I don't get paid enough to work here" worked, very slowly came over to the controls and decelerated the ride, rather then hitting the emergency stop button. Meanwhile the rides kept hitting the door. The door was a mangled mess (could have injured someone) and the ride operator proceeded to grab duck tape and tape the door shut. Everyone in line and on the ride noped out of there. Welds on the rides were bad but not only that, very cracked and rusted supports.

    Welding when you get all the prep right and everything is just working spot on is actually really relaxing I find. You get in the zone and nothing can move you.

      man, it's almost like you're in your own little world in there. You get your ear pro in, covered in leather or heavy cotton, mask down so you can see nothing but your weld... Everything else is gone, it's just you and your weld. I love it. Unfortunately my ears start to hurt after 4-6 hours with earplugs in so actually working 10 hour shifts as a welder hasn't worked out for me.

    My first big welding project was welding new axle perches and mounts as well as shoring up a northeast Jeep frame. 3 years later and the welds are still holding strong, and one time even smashed through a pothole and really rocked everything and they didn't break.
    I did this on literally like 2 hours of learning how to stick weld.
