"A Corner Of Wheat" is based on real-life multi-millionaire villain Fingy Conners who controlled the wheat business in the then-grain milling capitol of the world, Buffalo NY. Nationally known in his day, a number of books, a hit Broadway Play and several movies exploited Conners' reputation for evil in these artistic projects. @@commando3545 "The Death of Ase" from Suite No. 1, Op. 46 by Edvard Grieg. It's a very famous piece and there's lots of arrangements, I don't now which one this is. But, that's where the melody comes from

This actually is a very good movie for being the sample of early cinema that it is; the overacting that was typical of its contemporaries is minimal, the narrative is cohesive, and it was yet another step in the learning process and development of filmmaking technique that led to the modernization of film narrative; most of the aspects that made up this picture are a part of every movie or television show that have been made since, thanks to the pioneering efforts of director D. W. Griffith who learned by trial and error the distillation of cinematic techniques developed by himself and his contemporary filmmakers.
Picture quality is really good for 1909. Loved what happened to the greedy tycoon.
The drowning in wheat scene was replicated in the film "Witness".
Actually adapted from Norris's short story" A Deal in Wheat" and Norris's novel THE OCTOPUS
Yes, I just finished reading THE OCTOPUS. It's in the public domain and can be found online. Very powerful and moving novel!
