United Metropolitan Baptist Church The late Evon Reid- organist;. The late Evelyn Sellers- Choir Director. Honorable Rev. Dr. J. Donald Ballard- Pastor
They dont understand because they have gotten used to being entertained by a small group of singers (the praise team) and the falling away of church members Choir members because these praise team members want to be stars instead of being apart of a strong choir that includes many more worshippers into the service and not to mention greedy selfish musicians who seek money and fame and dont really care what the choirs sound like!!! Very sad for the overall spiritual health of the church..
I could watch/listen to this OVER and OVER again!!!! OMG...play Nicks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yessuh, how well I do remember him and the choir. Thats a SOLID drummer playing ok??!
OMG my church! Under the direction of Rev. Charles H. Nicks, it was pure praising our Lord and Savior! We would be in church all day but That's how we got over!!
whenever Rev. Nicks would walk into the National Baptist Convention whomever was on the organ would stop playing and get up so Rev. Nicks could plat the organ. God bless his legacy. PRECIOUS MEMORIES HOW THEY LINGER
@Marcell77 I'm a lifelong Detroiter and so is my husband, who's a Presbyterian minister. If I had known all this was going on over at St. James and known where it was my life might be very different today, because I would've joined your church and choir and majored in music instead of engineering. St. James Church is one of God's gifts to Detroit. May God bless you and the congregation. Thank you for posting these treasures.
This is when Choir's marched into the choir stand...what a blessing this is on youtube. i so remember being with my grandmother Ruthie Smith at this church...right by her side.
BLESS GOD!!! This is the way SoCal GMWA marches in and they sing WE ARE ON OUR WAY. This is spirited marching and puts you in the mind for worship along with the music. God Bless you for sharing ... these Gospel Classic moments captured on celluloid and seeing Rev Nicks in action!!!
C'mon church now that's the ol time time way. A solemn assembly processional NO ONE talked taking from the scripture Habakkuk 2:20 the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.sign of reverence boy I remember this holiness way..holding up one hand was a symbol of faith, and solidarity as a choir singing unto the Lord.. BEAUTIFUL SAINTS!!..Bishop Nick's u working that organ..my Lord bring those good ol days..PRAISE HIM YA'LL..how we got over by the grace of God
Ok here is the real deal, U have Rev. Charles Nicks Jr. on the organ (which is phenominal by itself) then u have Jimmy Dowell as the Minister of Music, what a combination (just having those two forces), and then you have The St. James Adult Choir (the choir of choirs). Is there anything else that needs to be said? NOP! Notice the musicianship, and the choir decorum, its truley missed and forgotten today. I MISS THIS FOR REAL! This is the way u do it!
Marcel, thanks for sharing this! I'm old school church, but had put the choir processional in the back of my mind. It took them about 6 minutes to march in! You KNOW "new" church ain't got time for that! LOL! No one could play the Hammond like Rev Charles Nicks! I love when he placed the bass keys: the "St James" sound!!
Rev. Clarence H. Cobbs the Founder and Pastor of First Church of Deliverance in Chicago, wrote this song on his way to Detroit, he said he heard the hum of the wheels of the car he was riding in, and that;s how this song How I got over came into fruition. It was written in the thirties.
When I watch this I think of First Church of Deliverance in Chicago. I believe the late Pastor Clarence Cobbs wrote this song for First Church. Choirs just do not have the old school flair for marching in any more
St. James M. B. church and The First church of Deliverance are sister churches. There is not much difference in our order of worship. I really miss the fellowship we had. We were one in the Spirit.
Thank you for posting this classic of all times. Rev. Nicks was one of my distant mentors in playing the organ. I have just about any St. James. Please, continue to post anything else you may have. Many aspiring young musicians can benefit from your posts!! God Bless You
This song was written in the thirties by my Pastor, Rev. Cobbs, he heard the melody in the hum of the wheels of his care and put the humming to music. You can find the words in the National Baptist hymnal, it's written in Bb in the hymnal, but First church and saint James, we sing it in Db.
I remember back in the 80's we would march in and proceed to the choir stand. Here it is in 2022 and the music directors did not Keep that tradition. In the church today they have Praise Teams Not choirs
Lord I miss my uncle. it's getting to where Imma just have to stop watching him direct because the more I see him, the more I miss him and we have had a Directors' Deficit ever since he left us...
Wow, church services in the 80's. I really miss those days!!!
What an organist! Pure Gospel. Pure Hammond legen. Pure Rev.Nicks!
Just unreal
Rev. Charles Nicks could play the Hammond he made the organ speak unlike so many today play at it.
I sure miss those days of choirs marching in 🥰🙏🏿
Nothing compares to the old-fashioned choir singing 🙏🏿🥰
I miss this! I remember being a child and waiting with tip toed anticipation for the choir to MARCH into the choir stand.
United Metropolitan Baptist Church The late Evon Reid- organist;. The late Evelyn Sellers- Choir Director. Honorable Rev. Dr. J. Donald Ballard- Pastor
People these days don't understand that choir pocessions were a part of praise and worship.
Yes INDEED!!!
Right!
MrTheOneAndOnly83 right on.
Absolutely!!!!
One of the best choirs ever to sing under the anointing of God. I am so glad I had the pleasure of being a part of this church and this choir.
Key word, Annointed....
I went to New Grace MBC of Highland park..I still do With the late Dr. REV JULIUS C HOPE. we would fellowship we St James around anniversary time

Back when we use to enter His courts with praise! 🙋🏾♀️🙌🏾
that's none other than Mr Jimmy "J.D." Dowell!! he was the minister of music at St. James!! he passed away in 2004.
whenever Rev. Nicks would walk into the National Baptist Convention whomever was on the organ would stop playing and get up so Rev. Nicks could plat the organ. God bless his legacy. PRECIOUS MEMORIES HOW THEY LINGER

Yesss. Had to revisit this. Lawd in heaven! I miss a serious choir! Choirs aren't this serious anymore.
I am back for THIS, this morning!!! YESSUH! PLAY NICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My day doesn't start right without the devotion and this march in. It is a MUST that I hear 'How I Got Over' before I start my day.
Saints marching in for The Lord. What an intro!
Two things I really loved about servie back in the day was testimony & the choir marching in ! !
Now that's some God-glorifying music 🎵🎶 right there! The choir is marching on in!!! BEAUTIFUL ❤️!
Oh yes, I missed the march. I always looked forward to march down the isle at 3627 Mt Elliot.
C'mon church now that's the ol time time way. Folks getting happy on the processional!!

You KNOW "new" church ain't got time for that! LOL! No one could play the Hammond like Rev Charles Nicks! I love when he placed the bass keys: the "St James" sound!!
This is still good music!
I am thanking God for this music. and my renewed strength.
I love the way you made an art form out of marching into the choir stands. Charles Nicks and JD could work that choir like no one else.
Rev. Clarence H. Cobbs the Founder and Pastor of First Church of Deliverance in Chicago, wrote this song on his way to Detroit, he said he heard the hum of the wheels of the car he was riding in, and that;s how this song How I got over came into fruition. It was written in the thirties.
2018 and it still rocks😊
You gotthat right, we sang it it in Db. OMG, Izora ringing that note.
Rev Charles H. Nick was the co founder of the GMWA and he was also the vice president.

How I got over, how I got over my Lord, and my soul looked back and wondered, wondered, wondered, how I got over my Lord.

I loved and missSt James! I grew up in this church and most Sundays sat on the steps of the pulpit.
Choir marching is almost a lost art.
Sad, but true
Wonderfully done.Praise God.!!
All i can say is YES LORD, YES LORD
When I watch this I think of First Church of Deliverance in Chicago. I believe the late Pastor Clarence Cobbs wrote this song for First Church. Choirs just do not have the old school flair for marching in any more

March children!!!
"I been buked (abused) and I been scorned, and I been talked about as sure as you're born."
Those were the days!!!!
Almost made a fool of myself when I saw them hands up. Talk about old church!
This song was written in the thirties by my Pastor, Rev. Cobbs, he heard the melody in the hum of the wheels of his care and put the humming to music. You can find the words in the National Baptist hymnal, it's written in Bb in the hymnal, but First church and saint James, we sing it in Db.
LISTEN TO THAT HARMONY, AMEN.
I aint seen a "march in" in ages. Lol
I went to a concert over at st james in 1973 me and mom had to stand outside it was too crowed " something about the grace of god was the hit lol"
I remember back in the 80's we would march in and proceed to the choir stand. Here it is in 2022 and the music directors did not
Keep that tradition. In the church today they have Praise Teams
Not choirs
A WORLDWIDE HAMMOND ORGAN LEGEND!!!
This is the third time I'm watching this...so cool
He's making it talk !!!!
Lord I miss my uncle. it's getting to where Imma just have to stop watching him direct because the more I see him, the more I miss him and we have had a Directors' Deficit ever since he left us...

Every Church should go back to usher in the Lord
It all comes pouring back over me and I'm home.
You all better march in the sanctuary. We do it the same way at Cosmopolitan. Step to Jesus choir!!!!!!
I Know they had to cool that organ off after he got through with it
okay do you have the lord's prayer... that's next...after all these years, I still know the order of service.
