    I love how they handled the fact that Vex was checking for traps right when Percy grabbed the armour. So beautifully done and it makes the choice to swap Vex out for Keyleth in Season 1 even better because this moment hits harder now.

    In fairness in the stream Vex was trying to check for traps in that moment. Percy just happened to touch the armor before she could. Represented here by Vex saying they should wait for Vax before grabbing it while Percy goes ahead.

    This episode was a masterclass in "it isn't the death that kills you, it's the reaction of the loved ones".
    Vax _sobbing SIMUTANEOUSLY_ as a kid and a man, both over his best friend, his sister, his world leaving him? Absolutely devastating.

    This death was SO IMPORTANT for the future of Vax and the final plot. They couldn’t skip it. I’m very intrigued to see how the resurrections will work in the future episodes.

    • @smashbrandiscootch719
      @smashbrandiscootch719 Год назад +29

      I was thinking a lot about this. This death and one other are ones that HAVE to happen for the story to play out. There's another that kinda should stay but I could see them changing if only to make death carry more weight because resurrection is really hard to work into a television show well.
      How I think they'll handle it is Kash won't rez Vex at all. I think her resurrection will be entirely dependent on Vax making the deal with the Raven Queen. WAAAAAAY later in the show the "Disintegration" death needs to happen. But while some other deaths are soooo important for character development, I could certainly see them glossing over all the other deaths and working that character development in in other ways. Once again if only because resurrection spells are way harder to work into a TV show than a dnd campaign. Sorry if any of that sounded know-it-all-ish of me. o.o

    • @smashbrandiscootch719
      @smashbrandiscootch719 Год назад +8

      @@BaronesaReturns Yeah, I was referring to that one as the one that "should happen but I can also see them glossing over it". Because yes it made him realize a lot of things and was hugely important for his development, it isn't 100% necessary for the story like this one and the disintegration death.

    • @jackakimbo5718
      @jackakimbo5718 Год назад +6

      Just because of the medium and having to keep things dramatic for people regardless of whether or not they're familiar with the campaign, I assume they're going to skip most of the other deaths that happened during the course of the campaign, or rewrite them in a way that an actual DEATH-death doesn't happen and it's just an insanely close call instead. For a TV show like this there would be increasingly diminishing returns and a lessened impact to have people resurrected over and over again, a tabletop game lets you get away with more of that.
      There's one other that I would never consider skipping, but the other ones can probably be written around so that a literal death doesn't occur in that instance, if not just skipped completely.

      @@smashbrandiscootch719 My take on the deaths is that, like you said, Raven Queen will rez Vex in exchange for Vax's pledge, Scanlon will be raised via big ritual (I feel like we need at least one, and everyone giving up something precious ties into Scanlon's "nobody really cares" story quite well; the irony is that he misses this display, only to see them thinking him a clown), and Vax becoming a revenant. I could also see Percy dying to Ripley and VM going to hell to rescue his soul from Orthax.

  • @pardox28
    @pardox28 Год назад +91

    This death HAD to happen as Vax's whole fate touched arc is dependent on it happening. To me it's the one death they could not alter or omit. In fact, it's why they made Keyleth be the one hit w/ Delilah's Finger of Death spell - if they kept it as Vex then having Vex die here in the Sunken Tomb would have felt repetitive. LoVM's title sequence includes literal threads of fate whirling around the characters. None of that can happen if they just skip of this death.

    So how it happened in the campaign was pretty much how it happened here, Percy grabs it but makes the dex save and she and trinket didn't, but trinket had enough hp he survived, but it brought her below 0 so she said she was unconscious. Matt asked so it brought you below 0.... thing is he had just described the explosion of energy as death energy I think. So she says she's unconscious, Matt asks if the brought her below 0, so she looks up at Matt then they just stared at each other for a second, and the look on Laura's face when she realized, she put the description of death energy together with below 0 hit points. Then he describes how she's just dead, it really was out of no where. I think she even had said she was checking for traps. But as it was a magic trap she probably wouldn't have found it anyways as it would probably have been such a high DC it would have taken Vax to find it. I like they did allude to the fact Laura had even said she was checking for traps as Taliesin said he was going to grab it, in the show by Vex saying they should wait for her brother as Percy goes to touch it.

    I like how they're portraying Craven Edge and the effect it has on Grog. Like, Grog is inherently a violent brute but it's for lack of a better term...fun violence? Or there's this childlike quality to him normally even as he's chopping people to bits. But with Craven Edge there's this intense, dark and perverse bloodlust that's really unsettling to see even from a character that's normally violent.

    The one character that really got sacrificed on the altar of translating from Campaign to Show is Lady Kima. She was there for the Sunken Tomb (mind you she was taken out of the fight for most of it). But Vox Machina were already established friends with Kima and Allura by the time the Briarwood Arc began, and similarly Kash and Zara are much more antagonistic compared to their relationship with VM in the campaign.
    At least Trinket finally got into the fight. (Which he does do in the campaign, just not super frequently. He ripped a Vampire's head off in the Briarwood Arc)

    Gunslinger needed to be adjusted several times throughout the campaign because it was, at times, busted. That was an artifact of them taking the Pathfinder Base class and converting it to 5e with minimal changes, though. Most of the changes had to do with Grit, if I recall correctly. The Home Game started as a Pathfinder game before they switched to 5e for the Livestream.

  • @LDIndustries
    @LDIndustries Год назад +4

    The idea that a character dying off in a rather non climatic way is cruel, I think is one that comes from the higher popularity of video games compared to table top. People are used to the characters given at the beginning being the ones you follow until the end of the story. If they die they go back and get a redo. If they don't get a redo then it's supposed to serve the story in some major way.
    But in TTRPG's characters can just drop dead. A lot of GM's make it so insta death stuff is rare if it is there at all but if the stakes have been set high and the players don't take it seriously then it's their fault.

  • @gunsmithcat7542
    @gunsmithcat7542 Год назад +2

    All D&D I've ever played myself comes from video games. Never played the Pen & Paper / Tabletop.
    I guess in a tabletop you can't just load a save-game - but according to the D&D I know (from video games) you could just drag the corpse to the nearest temple have and it resurrected - so until they come up with an explanation for why that won't be possible, she is still alive / save-able in my book.
    And if it won't be explained and they still decide to let her die - that's on them.
    And on a meta-level, it would be really dick-ish of a game-master to kill a player off just like that.
    And to get even more meta: If she does stay dead, that basically spoils the fact that a new main character will be introduced soon, since the player had to make a new one.

      Instant death spells exist for a reason.

    • @alftuvik3820
      @alftuvik3820 Год назад +4

      Things are simplified in videogames, you usually get a lot more access to these things there. In D&D, there's a few different spells that can be used, but they are expensive to cast even if you have access to them yourself and even more expensive if a temple does it for you. A low level party might not be able to afford it.
      Matt also added some extra rules for Critical Role, the spell is not guaranteed to work after casting it, the dice decides if they stay dead or are able to come back, they added that to add some risk, if you know you'll be revived anyway then who cares if you die in combat? Avoids making death as cheap and meaningless.
      In the campaign, Vex was killed by this trap because she rolled a 1 and failed to dodge it and she was already low on hitpoints, if she had been at full health she would have survived it. In the show they made it more of an insta-death trap.

    *Spoiler Alert*
    If I do remember the part of Campaign 1 correctly, I think mechanically they were doing a revivify the way Matt always did it where 3 players each had to make a contribution, and Vax's contribution was making a pact with the Raven Queen. "If you bring my sister back, you can have me instead." And that's what ends up working. And I feel like that doesn't even need to be edited very much to work in TV Show form. That alone sets Vax on the path that defines the entire rest of his character arc.
