American Football really tapped into something incredible, I gotta say. A distinctly American experience of those suburban homes and that life and culture all around it. And the music (specifically the originally I am referring to) is as uniquely stark and beautiful and melancholic to describe that experience.

I can’t wait for the tribute album for American Football coming out soon. It has all the songs from the original LP but with other bands covering all the songs with Iron And Wine kicking it off with the first track of Never Meant. So excited. I heard this song back in 2000 for the first time and the band was already broken up by then. I thought the song was pretty good but was not yet mature enough to truly appreciate it for what it is. Over the years my taste for music has changed pretty dramatically. I have pulled away from the punk, indie, emo rock that filled my ears in my youth to more mellow instrumental ambient shoe gaze music. There is however one band that I have never gotten tired of and have had a growing desire more and more over the years and that is non other than American Football. That first LP was truly magical. Their other newer albums are great as well but that first LP can never be replicated. Thank you American Football for all my youthful memories that are tied to your music. For getting me through rough patches in my life. You will never know what you’ve meant to your listeners. For that, I am glad that this song, in my eyes, was Always Meant. UPDATE: I now like this song more than the original. The melody flows and is so beautiful. Also the vocals is just so unpredictable its mesmerizing.

What I love most about this cover is how personal it feels. While the original has that intense, youthful energy, Iron & Wine’s version feels like a quiet conversation with an old friend. It’s as if he’s sharing a story from the past, but with a sense of peace and acceptance. It hits differently, but in the best way possible. Long live sam beam and american football
This is soooo beautiful and the video is so poetic. Sam being projected on different spots of the house is emblematic of the cover itself. It’s like Sam is reflecting on the meaning of the song, while interpreting it through his playing. His image becomes a pondering daydream upon the landscape that tells the story. The history and meaning is already there, and now it’s Sam passing through it. It’s super cathartic and reflective to watch. What an amazing and wonderful surprise to see these two artists collide. Also seeing the house in all these new ways is so cool, it always makes me emotional and meditative, just like the music of iron and wine.
