Lovely looking little pieces, but I personally miss a countdown timer. The thinness stands out vs the vintage series watch I have in gold. I'd also like to see additional models in this trim level. This is compelling in itself. I have trouble paying 200-300 for a watch without more the 30m water resist tho.
Check out the A168W-1 or A158wEA . Those models are very similar and usually go for around 20 USD. I actually prefer both of those models to what is in the video.
Hi Jody! As a Casio lover, I have to say this one is very nice, no frills, minimalistic, and metal :) Also, I'm a woman and I never liked watches that people consider feminine, and so my dream is of a future when all watches would decrease in size, or at least will have 2 sizes to choose from. Instead of having "women" and "men" watches differing in aesthetics, I'd rather have the same watches for big wrists and for small wrists, differing only in size!
Very good comment Lara. My wife is of the same opinion! I have an 8.1" wrist so I tend to go for bigger watches but I do have a few smaller ones and she wears them more than I do. She has a small 5.2" wrist so men's 36mm up to 40mm if they have short lug to lug lengths look very good on a slim wrist.
I hate the idea of gendering a watch. I am a man. My favorite color is pink. I went to bucherer's and checked out the Patek Philippe watches. The only one I wanted to try was a "ladies" watch, it had a rose gold case totally studded with diamonds, though it didnt look gaudy.....Anyway, the saleswoman made sure to ask me "are you sure?" more than once. As for the casios jody talked about, I really want the pink colored rose gold version. But it's 160 USD and I just got the 5600PG, so I'll need to wait 6 months or so and see if I'm still thinking about the pink colored rose gold version.
@@MrLogistician I totally get you! A lot of watches I like are unfortunately too big for my wrist! And I agree, what people wear shouldn't be gendered. For example I don't particularly like pink or purple and sometimes I struggle with some footwear and sporty items.
These are great for guys with slimmer wrists . I got the white mop dial for Christmas and love it . Great for in winter when wearing long sleeves at work because it fits easily under the shirt sleeve, looks quite dressy for a digital watch and the mop is quite subtle but looks awesome in direct sunlight. For sure , they might not be the first pic for boxers and rugby players , but for regular office working type guys in the city these are super fun and functional watches.
I bought the a1000ma-7d. Put it on a polished oyster bracelet. The pearl front isn't really noticeable. The steel case & bracelet give it heft. It's a keeper. It also has a leather strap on deployment clasp for a dressed up look.
Ahh Casio.. Wonderful watches! My wife just this morning told me a story that the pop singer Shakira lost her boyfriend to another woman. Apparently she asked why her boyfriend would leave a Rolex to go to a Casio. I just said "Well at least the Casio will always be on time." 😜
Might have to pick up that gold one. Very very nice. Totally agree about not branding these things gents or ladies, zero point for what is a patently a unisex watch.
You've been posting earlier than usual and it's awesome because people in the US, like myself, get to be one of the first people to watch. Thanks dude!
I bought the black MOP and white MOP versions. I then swapped the modules over, sold the white MOP version, then put a bracelet from the A100 on it. Perfect 🤣🤣🤣
I personally love mother of pearl. I do see how some would feel it’s very feminine in design. I love the color effects of it and the texturing it provides.
The A1000s that they did in collaboration with Rag & Bone have sapphire crystals. There’s a black one and a gunmetal gray one. Model numbers are A1000RCB-1 and A1000RCG-8B respectively. And the bracelets look much nicer. Retail is US$250 though. Ouch!
I'm conflicted, I appreciate the case/strap/crystal material upgrades can't be free but even the cheapest one of the bunch is a chunk more than I'd be happy to pay given the module inside is still their BOGO, basic one that you'd find in a ~£/$/€10 Casio. Mostly though (as you noted) for what they're asking sapphire should be on offer, Casio have managed it elsewhere on edifice and other models around the same price point. If we're wishlisting budget Casio's for a similar materials upgrade mine would be the W-214 it's round, intended to ape a 6900 G-Shock but has a really useful quick timer feature on the module and a big old light button on the front, a blinged up version of that would be great (IMO of course)...
I totally agree that the water resistance should increase, and the price should massively decrease. Imho a sapphire crystal is not that crucial since you can get a screen protector and keep the cost down. Screen protectors are a great addition to any non sapphire crystal, I have one on my MRW 200 and I'm very satisfied.
You mentioned this treatment for the ae1200 and I can't agree more. Out of the casio variety that makes up my watch collection, I wear the ae1200 most. I just love ot. That being said, I thought it would be cool to do themed paint jobs on them, so I have made some mock ups on the pc. I was hoping to see what Casio would say, but unfortunately they denied seeing them outright. I don't even want any kind of compensation, I just want to be able to buy these commercially.
Rag & Bone edition has sapphire crystal. WR for the price could be a bit better though. I'd love to have them with solar-charged battery and wrist-move activated backlight. Cheers dr Jody!
I got the one in gold with a brown face. I did changed the mesh out for a brown leather strap. It totally changed the look, and made it more of a digital dress watch.
For this price saphire glass and a 7 or 10 year battery or solar power (where possible) would be nice. I would like high accuracy quartz versions especially. And how good are the buttons? They seem a bit fragile and not always easy to push. Will they stand the test of time?
I get the draw, and i would be in the market... If it was 60% off. Ive got an A168 that i paid $20 USD for, and it's got electroluminescence. I'm not really willing to pay $80 more dollars (or 5x the price!) for a metal case and a downgrade to an led light.
I second that. Would be interesting to see what would a woman pick as her top 10. Women usually wear cheap fashion watches and not that many are into automatics.
Hi Jody, I have the gold version of this watch and it's lovely. I have fitted it with a brown lizard skin leather strap which I cut down from 24mm to 18mm with a scalpel so that it integrates nicely with the case. I have big wrists - about 7.75" and even though the Casio is small it looks good ( if like me you are happy to wear small watches). It's a pretty little dress watch for me that I don't have to worry about too much and it gets a lot of compliments. I really hope they do a metal case for the W217h, and maybe some strap options too. Love the channel 👍
its not just you at all. I honestly cant see the attraction to paying this much for this kind of spec. Metal case and metal bracelet. NOT a huge wow for me. And i do love casios.
Casio now has tbe name "Vintage Premium" so now it needs more models to flesh out the range. I'd love to see a round case and a piece using the module from the W217h because I like the larger display.
I got the gold last year at a steep discount. I'm happy with it. I avoided the negative display as I'd heard they had poor legibility, but you didn't bring it up so maybe I've been misinformed. edit: I see a comment here about the bad negative displays.
you havent been misinformed my friend has one the viewing angles are not the same as more modern casios. WHich is odd because this is supposed to be a updated watch.
Note - I have one of these, with the negative display. Very goodlooking watch...but very poor visibility at some angles. You can see that in some of the shots in the video. You can always press the light button on the watch of course, but I kind of lost interest in the watch because of the poor visibility.
Swapped the mesh out for the PRX-style bracelet off a different Casio, and now it's one of the prettiest watches I own, at any price. Looks like it was meant to come that way.
I have the 1BE and I bought it even though it was marketed, though not by Casio themselves, as a ladies watch. I also think the steel with white mother of pearl is perfectly wearable for a man. The only downsides I have is the legibility of the negative display and, well, the price. I bought mine second hand for a reason. I'd also kill for a metal A158 or AE1200!
A few months back I gave in and bought the all silver model on sale. It's really nice but I wish they would embrace the vintage 80s styling a bit more and offer a black dial with all the colourful text. They do offer the A1000 with sapphire by the way but only on two more rugged looking (and expensive) versions made in cooperation with rag & bone.
Interesting you mention the crystal, I completely agree, it's a lot of cash for an easy scratched watch. My own particular bete noir with Casio is their MRW-200H. I absolutely adore this watch, it was my daily driver for years, an actual real "beater" watch (not that I don't take care of all my watches anyway) but please Casio at the very least fit with a mineral crystal. Yes I know I could just use Polywatch every now and again but it's such a perfect watch in many ways, perfect size (IMHO), feather light (I like light watches), day and date display and very robust.
I have the stainless finishes in both positive and negative display versions. They both look great and the MOP is very subtle but looks quite good. These are super slim and well finished with a decent back light. The displays are not as good as some other modern Casio digitals though, especially the negative one, definitely old school as the best viewing angle is quite narrow by todays standards. Maybe that's part of the charm of a new 'old' watch. Anyway I'm happy with mine. Prices were pretty good when I got mine but they have fluctuate significantly over the last year or maybe two.
I’m waiting on the A1000MA-7EF in the mail. I do like the new loop band with the brushed face so that’s why I got it, though I think they should have done the A700 in SS version which in my opinion does look better
Already planned out a similar product line for F91 and such in this 2023. Definitely love these vintage timepieces when modernly made. Great content as always!
Sweet little watches! I have the A700 and it is the king to me. I like the style and layout better than the A1000. Best watch under 75 dollars in the world in my opinion. Right there with the 5600.
The new metal case is a fantastic step in the right direction; wish you showed off the oyster style bracelet though. And what’s that third bracelet option all about anyway?
@@shadesunner9935 yeah that's totally true, I think it's a different target group than most WIS, this line is more for those who like to use their watches as an accessory or bracelet than a watch, so to speak you know? A bit akin to the crowd that buys Michael Kors watches, but with more legitimate WIS appeal its being a Casio.
Oh man, a full metal ae1200 from casio is the dream. I have a metal case and bracelet for my ae1200 from skxmod, but would jump at a factory model if they had the sapphire too like the skxmod case does.
Haha couldn't agree more about the sapphire. From Casio you get sapphire on the Oceanus line and even on some affordable Edifice watches, but when it comes to digital watches you only find these on special editions for a grand or even more. If these had sapphire, I'd get one of these geek-chic watches in less than a blink of an eye! 😆
Ah, the high price of nostalgia...too high for this one unfortunately. It is a very nice looking watch, but for that money, a better backlight, sapphire crystal (and even real gold) would justify the asking price! You can find very similar looking ones for under $40 that are also all metal and have better backlights. As always, great review Jody! Keep them coming!
The Rag and Bone special edition of this model has sapphire crystal but also a ridiculous price around 250 euros. All we ask to Casio is to put the B-640 module on a steel case with the classic look and colors. Is that too much?
I recently bought 3 versions of the A1000 - stainless, stainless with the inverted display, and the gold one. The all stainless one is on a link bracelet and the other two are the mesh bracelets. I love the watches but I've decided I don't like the mesh bracelets, because the ends are too loose in the spring bars. This allows the case to move around too much, so the watch looks crooked on my wrist. I'm going to replace those two bracelets. Personally, I really like the mother of pearl and don't have any reservations wearing it...
G'morning Jody' ☕☕ 😎 . Thanks for the heads-up, I admit I love my vintage casio's and as cool as these are unfortunately their a bit too small for me 😎
I have a Casio A1000 and am surprised that the light only comes from this small lamp that sits in the left corner. My cheap Casio with a resin case has this modern blue LED light where you can't see a lightbulb. Why does a more expensive watch have the worse light?
I was seriously considering getting one as a Christmas present for myself last year. They all look great, but the black and the darker rose gold models would be my picks. The only upgrade I'd make is a solar movement. Otherwise, I'm glad to see Casio offer a premium version of their basic digital watches!
have you heard about teh Casio A1000RCB-1 (VINTAGE)? that's a collab model but premium (sapphire, solid link, etc) but price is 2-3x than basic models.
Casio: "How would like to pay $200 for an F-91W?" Me: "But...I can get one for $10." Casio: "Yeah, but this F-91W is silver-painted and has a negative display!" Me: "Ooh, sign me up!"
Jody, you're a great ambassador for casio without a doubt. I'm still having trouble getting pass the 'petrol station' watch image I personally have in my head. Maybe I need to be more geek/nerdy. Nice looking finishes, though. Do keep trying to persuade this Sassenach.....
It’s surprising how much more the material cost on this new model for the new band, face and SS case even though the module is the same in the a700 models which go for 30$
Really hoping to see you review the g shock GA2200 soon. Thanx for all the vids and great content. JOMW always has great info that helps make decisions. Cheers
I've had the white mop dial version for a couple of years now, my favourite non G-Shock Casio by far & I love the mop dial. Worn a little looser it''s still super comfy, almost imperceptible on wrist. Are you man enough?
So many color variants and yet nothing for me. I would like to have a1000ma-7af but on links bracelet instead of mesh one. With Safire. I need to wait for a new version I guess
Would've like to have heard a review of the solid bracelet, is it the same old pain old rolled steel links? Or is it actually half decent solid steel links
I wonder if Casio will bring back the DW1000 200m WR with stainless steel case, that first came out a couple of years before the GShock came on the market back in 1983. I still have the original case, minus the module that died a couple of months ago. I still have the original receipt when I purchased the DW1000 in the Philippines back in 1985. It cost me ₱795. Converting that currency back to Aussie $, the watch cost me $54...thereabouts. It seems that the word vintage is now becoming the flavour of the month word. Anything up for sale that's "old", it's must be considered rare, and thus must attract a premium price. Just look through Ebay, with many so called rare watches with a asking price in the tens of dollars, if not in the hundreds. If a watch is that rare, why use Ebay, when going through an auction house may produced a better selling price. Because the auction house takes its share of the sold price.
Be interested to know hw the gold coating holds up. I've got an A168 fetish, and the only issue with them is that the coated models only require sneezing on, and you lose some of the coating!.
Lovely looking little pieces, but I personally miss a countdown timer. It’s the difference between “how long did I exercise” versus “when will my dinner catch fire in the oven.”
I wish they'd make one of these with an a168-style faceplate. All the text is part of the charm of these tiny casios.
Agree 100%

My first watch was a 52QGS-14 Casiotron in a shiny gold tone metal case. 😃
Thanks for the video Dr. Jody. How about reviewing some of the Casio ProTrek line?
Well a year later Jody I may as well get the A1000MA-7VT for $121 Tictac. No need for the F91W and F105W either ;P
The new metal case is a fantastic step in the right direction; wish you showed off the oyster style bracelet though. And what’s that third bracelet option all about anyway?
for their premium vintage they should have gone for a module that includes a countdown timer, as the one in the B640.
Serious talk, I've owned many watches with count down timer, I used it like grand total of.... twice.
@@drfathertime yeah, but in this case it would've justified the price.
@Shade Sunner the LED does a far reasonable job of lighting the display, no complaints there.
@@traviswalker8933 perhaps so.... but man, I love that MOP dial lol
Hey Jody, would have loved to hear a word or two about the bracelet. Cheers!
I can see the appeal. But the price? I have a gold w217 coming from TicTakArea for $37 AUD including postage. And I’m excited! 😍
I’ve been looking for a cheap gold tone watch, the bracelets are usually not well colour matched. This one is a good shout though 👍🏼
I think but not sure, there's a version with a Dimond on the face too!
If only they could bring back those stainless case digital sport watches from the 80's with the marlin on the dial.
It's like I'm back in the early 80s I've had a couple of those watches like that. In fact I remember we had ink pens with clocked at him back then
Does anyone remember the melody alarm watches from the early 80's? I'd love to see a remake of the Casio M-321 for example..
I don't remember it, but I've watched it restored here on RUclips, man that's a fun watch!
I was thinking of this one just other day...can't remember how many tunes it had....
@@daffyd5867 it had like tune for every day of the week, chistmas carol, birthday, and a few more?
@@daffyd5867 ruclips.net/video/cen5nItDuwk/видео.html
@@drfathertime yes....someone gave it to my father....he thought it was fantastic....don't know what happened to it...
Great video! But . . . the screen is so small!
have you heard about teh Casio A1000RCB-1 (VINTAGE)? that's a collab model but premium (sapphire, solid link, etc) but price is 2-3x than basic models.
Casio: "How would like to pay $200 for an F-91W?"
Me: "But...I can get one for $10."
Casio: "Yeah, but this F-91W is silver-painted and has a negative display!"
Me: "Ooh, sign me up!"
Jody, you're a great ambassador for casio without a doubt. I'm still having trouble getting pass the 'petrol station' watch image I personally have in my head. Maybe I need to be more geek/nerdy. Nice looking finishes, though. Do keep trying to persuade this Sassenach.....
You need a calculator watch in your life my man!
Not surprised you don’t get sapphire it’s the same story with the all metal Gshocks at $600 usd
They already came out with an a1000 with sapphire crystal with the rag and bone limited edition :) maybe a sign of things to come...
That gold one is actually kinda cool 👍
Casio, please give us more WR, keep the negative displays and extend the battery Life! These things can be more than digital dress watches!
Digital dress watches, never thought about it, but what a fascinating concept! This watch actually fits the bill as a digital dress watch.
Perhaps you need the G-SHOCK GMS5600GB-1D instead?
@@drfathertime I wear my gold-brown one as a dress watch. Replaced the mesh bracelet for a brown leather strap.
@@MrPleers Hahahahahahahahaha, you rock! Care to share the pic on imgur or something? I would love to see it!
I'm confused by this. For those prices, I would expect Bluetooth, not just a F91-W style watch with a better light and metal case.
I think if one shops around, the prices are quite a bit lower.....
I like that gold one with the black face!
Do you have any idea if the faceplate can be removed or is it attached to the glass.
If this watch had Dual time, a countdown timer, and a sapphire crystal, it would’ve been PERFECT.
It does look very classy for what it is and for me deepens the mystery behind the plastic Seiko. I still don't understand what they were thinking 🤔
Hey wait - I just noticed ... when did the studio get plants???
I've had mine a year and wear it almost every day. It still looks flawless. I'm a sedentary indoor guy though - it doesn't get bashed around much.
