The biggest pressure I feel with BookTube is to stay up to day with upcoming and new releases. As well as staying on top of what authors are saying and doing, so as to not read something by someone that is “problematic“. Whatever happened to read a book you are interest in and not worrying about what people think? Just because you read something doesn’t mean you agree with what a particular author says and does. I prefer videos that say things like this is why I liked or didn’t like a book. Not you should read this or avoid this because of x, y, z. It makes me feel like we have to be friends with the author to enjoy what they write so as to support them. This always spikes my anxiety. I just want to read for the love of reading and not have to worry about making sure I get so many boxes checked.
The idea of not reading something "problematic" was so stressful to me too! I eventually stopped caring about which books youtubers deemed problematic. Ultimately if you read a book and you enjoy it you shouldn't have to care about what anyone says about it. I feel proud for loving certain favourite books and no one can tell me if these are the "right" books to read.
Interesting exposition. Only just heard of Book Tube - I read lots of books and also like to hear people talking about them so this was a lovely discovery. Unfortunately this video has almost put me off bothering to watch any of the presentations. I think I shall take this advice and look for the presenters who just want to talk about books. I shall also search for interviews with writers as I am interested in the process of putting a book together. It’s fabulous that there is so much passion in the video and in the comments for reading books - got to be a good thing.
I feel like Booktube has become more about the showing than actually reading. If you don't have an immaculate huge bookshelf with pristine hardbacks and colourful dust jackets you don't really belong in the community. That's what's bagging me a lot because I own so many second hand old paperbacks and doesn't mean I'm less of a reader because of that.
Thank you for doing this video. I am new to booktube so I missed most of the stuff that happened as it grew. I definitealy agree that there is pressure for videos to look professional, and not everyone can afford the equipment for that. I don't do any editing, so it's all in one take, which adds pressure as well. I think the hardest thing for me is getting people to see your videos, to know you exist in the booktube world because it is huge. I am always searching for booktubers who talk about books I am into, and it is time consuming to hunt down booktubers I'm interested in following. So I know it's hard for others to find me as well. It seems young booktubers are most popular, with talk of YA and Fantasy - neither of which I'm interested in. Anyway, thank you for starting this discussion.
I totally started to feel the pressure on Booktube to the point I needed a SM break for like 4 months because I couldn't handle it. Now I decided that if someone watches my videos great and if they don't that's okay too. I can't keep up with people who live at home, don't have to worry about rent and can read all the time. I read for fun and I now make videos for fun. That's it.
Good that you took the beak that you needed! Yes I understand, personal situations and certain privileges is something that I would like to discuss in another video. It’s definitely a thing that can give pressure as well!
I started my channel on my 70th birthday a year ago. What I like about being the Creator is the community. I think there is a space for every type of Creator here. I started feeling pressure because I wasn't as tech-savvy as other younger booktubers. But I have a lot to say and I think ageism can be fought when older people join a club that younger people started. I'm pretty zany and even though I have less than 1000 subscribers, I feel seen. Thank you for this video. Aloha
I don't want to over simplify or to negate the pressure felt but I think the thing is to determine what your specific goal is, are you aiming for commercial success or to celebrate the joy of books. The former will always create pressure, just as every other job on this sweet earth.
I like the format of the older videos much more than the newer ones. I am not crazy about the vlogs and games etc. I am here to learn about new books and book reviews. I am pulling away from booktube because it is not going in the direction of simplicity and being educated about books. I guess you can call me old fashion. Another beef I have as an adult reader is all the middle and YA books being discussed.
I considered makeing booktube videos or Instagram or something but I don’t read that much currently or buy that much and my shelves are not booktube aesthetic more like what I like and then some random boxes and stuff around them with books that didn’t fit anymore. I just felt like I didn’t fit and wouldn’t meet the "Standards" on booktube so i Never even started. It’s interesting to hear that from someone who is actually in the community not "just a viewer". 😊
This was super interesting. I'm new to Booktube and RUclips in general is hard work although very enjoyable. For me it's a creative outlet but wow, the pressure especially for booktubers is high. Mostly because not only do you have to create beautiful and original videos, but you also have to fit in a huge amount of reading! Not easy if you're working at the same time that's for sure.
I've watched Booktube since 2015. I hadn't realized how much it had changed until you started listing all the different videos there exist today. In a way, I miss the simplicity of old Booktube. I love watching long videos but there's a difference between a good, long video and a badly edited one. Anyway, I sound like a grumpy old woman that misses the old times, but the truth is I love all the booktubers I now have the pleasure of following and booktubers like you, who I've followed for years! For me, it's more important to be interested in the booktuber as person, their personality, because I follow a lot of booktubers that have wildly different reading tastes from mine. I really love when you do these types of focused videos and I'm looking forward to more!!!
I think the diverence between book tube then and book tube now is that they used to make videos as a hobby and now they make videos to earn money. Not that there is anything wrong with that but that gives a diverent vibe. I don't like it when I want to watch someone's tbr for the upcoming month that I get 5 minutes of commercial from a sponser. I skip that and some book tubers I have unsubscribed from because it is more begging for subscribers and commercials. I only follow a few book tubers who are more basic.
I love your personality, Michelle, your videos certainly stand out, they are beautiful and bright with positive vibes that always make me feel better, make me smile and make me feel that everything okay with the world :) Thank you for such a good video, I think it's very helpful for your Booktube fellows who feel pressured, keeping this topic up here on Booktube in your future videos might be a good thing! I'm just a reader though so my perspective is very, very limited :) I love the vlog types of videos so very much!! I'm here for new books, your thoughts on them and for just seeing you and support you! 💓 But your health is what really matters, please don't put pressure on yourself! You are the Best!!!!! 💗
Great video Michelle. I've been on BookTube 6 years now I think and the change in the community is just mad - from the types of videos people make, to the quality and then the pressure from the off to be super aesthetically pleasing, have all the books, the make up, the perfect background. I honestly, have not been able to keep up or compete in any way and it definitely made me sad for a while. But lately, I definitely feel a weight lifted off my shoulder with the whole thing as I've really come to the realisation that this is just a hobby for me, I like talking about books but I don't want it to be a 'job'. I have my own work life, family life, social life as well as a home and other things to keep up with and I just am at a stage where I can't dedicate any more time to BookTube than the bits and pieces I've been able to do. And then I have specific times during the year (such as March and The Irish Readathon) where I really focus all my BookTube energy into and I have loads of fun. And it's completely okay - I actually feel worried when I see younger booktubers in their teens now come and seem to think they have to look or act a certain way, and the amount of books they buy as well because they think they have to :O I think the first reading vlog for me was Helene Jeppesen started doing monthly reading vlogs instead of a sit down wrap up and it wasn't long before everyone copied her and now they are a thing haha.
I always enjoy these types of videos! It's so reassuring to know that I'm not alone in feeling this type of pressure with my channel. I try to tell myself to just film when I want to/do the types of videos that make me happy, but it can sometimes be soooooo hard to not get caught up in looking at the number of subscribers or comparing to other channels.
Keep doing your thing Michelle! I completely agree that there have been changes, and some are good, some not so great. I’m not a content creator, but I 100% see what you’re saying. At the end of the day, I love to hear your thoughts and insights on different books! You bring a great perspective to the book tube community!! 📚💕
I really appreciate your thoughts on this and I definitely think you should consider doing a series about different types of pressure on BookTube, Michelle. Your points are always so nuanced and on point 😊 I will say since the start of this year in particular, I am slowly drawing myself away from BookTube - I don’t care for long reading vlogs and I do really miss the more simple and ‘staple’ videos. I find that when you watch long videos you have far less time for reading! 😓 And I can’t even imagine how long it takes creators like yourself to compile and edit these 😬 I also find that some channels are posting incredibly frequently and now that I’ve started a new and very demanding job, I don’t feel the inclination to watch ALL the videos certain channels upload so I only end up watching one a month - it feels (to me anyway) that there is a lot of over saturation on booktube which is really what I’m not here for 😔 a very thought-provoking video 💜
Thank you lovely! Yeah I think there are definitely more viewers who feel that way, there is so much content these days. And sometimes things change and develop so quickly, it’s hard to keep up. I hope you can enjoy the parts of booktube you still want to watch, and maybe shorter videos will get back in style 😘
I feel this too. I don't have time with a full time job, writing my own novel, housework, making my own booktube videos, and reading books to review, etc. to watch videos every day. I'd like to find a handful of booktubers who read the stuff I read and do reviews about once a week.
I feel booktube is too much these days. I watch very few videos now and booktubers. I don’t watch vlogs or reading sprints. I like readathon vlogs. But all these long videos would take away my reading time. I’m here reading recommendations in hauls and wrap ups. I also like readathons. You do you. Your true followers will watch. I’m backing away more and more as booktube changes.
Hi! I don't have a channel, but I follow many italian, American and english readers. I enjoy watching people talking about books, their book habits, their bookshelves, book tags, discussions ecc. And why almost no one does book tags anymore? 😭
Those are all very real things that are happening in the Booktube community right now. What I’ve gathered from the comments so far is that there are definitely more people who miss ‘old’ BookTube!
There should not be enough pressure to cause stress. There are stressors everywhere, but when you do what you love (which is reading and connecting with others who read) there should be hardly any pressure (only to get your product) up to standard. Not pressure that causes extreme stress so what you do is unhealthy mentally. Love your video anyway, very informative. Thank you for sharing.
I also feel that numbers became SO important in like the last year or so. And people are almost pushing people to subscribe to their friends channels cause they are almost hitting a milestone. This was a great video Michele, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic. Amazing video! I started making BookTube video’s a year ago and I did feel like I was entering this world where a lot of professional video’s were made. It’s a space for me where I can be creative now (I mainly do reading vlogs and I made a tbr game, haha, I feel called out). But making what you want to make versus what gets a lot of views is not always easy, I do feel the pressure.
I have seen a lot of shop with me and Live videos. I enjoy the vlogs and wrap ups. I also notice many book tubers are reading only new releases. I really don’t like the over enthusiastic booktubers. They seem fake.
True! Those are some trends that have been very prominent lately. Yeah I get what you mean, it’s so important to find booktubers who are suitable for your and your reading tastes ❤️
I feel like it's important to also do reviews of older books. Just because a book is odler doesn't mean it's not worth reading or that everyone has already read it.
A couple of tips that might help you save some of your energy to focus on more important things: 1) Hold your hands together in one place, you are exhausting yourself waving your hands about and exhausting your viewers; 2) stop the repetitiveness of your comments;, again you are exhausting yourself and your viewers; most people are listening and hear you the first time you say something; 3) speak more slowly; by editing yourself you can say more with fewer words. Take a breath once in a while. I hope this helps. Good luck.
It's reading. It's making videos on RUclips. These are hobbies. If a hobby causes the feeling of pressure then a good long look at it and a serious consideration of whether it's worth it should be had.
I think that’s maybe a bit oversimplified. Yes, it should be fun to do and you should always look after your mental health, but enjoying something and feeling pressure about it are not mutually exclusive in my opinion. I think it’s natural to feel pressure to improve, or to maintain what you’ve build. Also, for more and more people this is turning into something of a job, so increasing pressure is to be expected. What I wanted to say with this video is that it’s normal to have these feelings, and that we could talk about it together.
