    Hi Andrew, it would be interesting to have a British writer taking on this topic as Americans have always had a different take on Ringo music than us here in Blighty.The fact Ringo has not bothered touring the Uk in decades suggests a slight difference in the popularity of Ringo here to over the water.Cheers mate

    From a recent Forbes interview with Ringo Starr:
    Conversation around the song has been going on for months, but so far, no specific release date has been shared just yet. AP pushed Starr about that topic, asking when fans will be able to hear the tune. The celebrated musician, who is currently promoting his latest EP Rewind Forward, said plainly that “It should’ve been out already.”
    This begs the question is it not being released this year and what is the issue?

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  Год назад

      It seems to be very close to announcement time now (although we've said that before!) and all indications from insiders are that it will still be out this year.

    While not as crazy about every little Ringo song as I am about everything Macca (or John or George), I'm very curious about this book. I'm certainly fan enough to have pre-ordered his next EP, and owning all his albums in one format or another. There's a lot of good music in his discography. Not to mention his drumming.

    Thanks for this video Andrew. I must admit that I have tended to overlook Ringo's solo career, I do have a few of his albums on both vinyl and CD, but don't really play them that much, if at all, with the exception of his 1973 almost Beatles reunion album "Ringo". This book looks fascinating, rather like Lucas Perasi's "Music Is Ideas" on Pauls solo output, so I shall be putting in my order for this. Just from looking at the few pages you have shown us Andrew I was able to learn that Ringo joined Bob Dylan on his Rolling Thunder Revue tour in June of '76, so there's tons of stuff there to discover about Ringo's solo career. Once it's arrived and I've had a chance to read it. (No doubt whilst on my breaks at work. I work in the NHS and if these strikes continue I may get to finish it in a couple of sittings... Hopefully not, we need this settling so the patients can get their much needed ops...) I'll come back with my thoughts upon it and the impressions I got. Again thanks for the heads up on ordering it from amazon, and if you or anyone else are interested Ade Edmondson's new book is out next week (28th sept) and that also looks like a cracking read.....

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  Год назад

      Thanks Terry. Hearing that Ade Edmondson has a book coming is both interesting but also makes me feel sad that we will never get similar from Rik Mayall.

    • @terrymann1341
      @terrymann1341 Год назад

      Yes, but Rik did write a spoof autobiography in the early 2000's, but I know what you mean. There are those rare occasions when I'm feeling a little low and I know that either playing a Beatles album or watching Rik and Ade in Bottom always lifts my spirits. Ordered my copy of Drumming is his madness and should be with me on Tuesday. I can't wait. Thanks again for bringing this book to our attention, much appreciated. Is there any chance you might get to interview Andrew James about his book? Loved the one you did with Laurence Juber, watched that one a few times now....@@AndrewDixonMusic

  • @MrDirtybear

    Thank you for this video Andrew. Print to order books has been available for some time. Print to order books have put many an antiquarian book seller of out of business as out of copyright books have been reprinted by adventurous new publishers, lowering the value of the original antique publication. How does the Starr book compare with Pete Dogget's writing approach to the career of The Beatles? Dogget must have written a fair amount about Ringo, does Andrew James' writing advance Dogget's style, or lean on Dogget's work on Ringo as one of Beatles?

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  Год назад

      This would be a totally different kind of book to what Pete Doggett would write.
      This is purely an assessment/overview of each song on each of Ringo's albums along with a ranking and an overview of each album's origin, rather than a biography type book that Doggett would write.

  • @TheSchemel
    @TheSchemel Год назад +2

    Oh, very cool. It's about time! What's he basing his rating on? Ringo was never meant to be a singer, so you can't compare him with his contemporaries, or the music that was playing on the radio at the time of each release of one of his albums. I love Ringo's voice, but over the years I've heard people say that he can't sing. That still baffles me. Sure, he's no Dean Martin, but he can sing anything and it's going to sound at the very least okay. There are artists out there who I love, but when they try to sing a cover it's horrible. There is not a lot of thought put in today's ratings of albums or musicians. Take Rolling Stone magazine for example, there is absolutely no thought put into their rating system. It's a joke, but it's taken seriously by a lot of people. Hopefully this guy is fair to Ringo

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  Год назад +2

      The rating is Andrew's own opinion, but with what he regards as Ringo's absolute best (,e.g. Photograph and a few others) being a 10 and then everything else in comparison to that.

      @rockarchiveschannel9390 I got the recent RSD CD reissue of "Stop And Smell The Roses". I bought it because the two singles I know from the album weren't on my Ringo Starr CD compilation. I played it, bracing for the worst. And I found it to be a very good album, at least for a Ringo Starr one. You've got George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson giving a hand with the songwriting and production. John Lennon was supposed to be on there as well, helping out with "Nobody Told Me" and "Life Begins At 40". But, the events of Dec. 8th, 1980 put a stop to that.

    8:24 "Interesting" is your tactical go-to word for describing views you disagree with, Andrew, in the way the Mazz always uses "I get that." A conversation between the Mazz & yourself:
    "To be honest Yoko Ono isn't my prime choice female singer."
    "I get that. I sometimes wonder whether Oasis are overrated."
    "Interesting. To be fair, I could do without Ornette Coleman and some of what you might call 'avant garde'."
    "I totally get that. But you know, I'm not so sure John Barry is all that indispensable to James Bond."
    "Interesting!"

      Beware of everything post "Vertical Man". Most of it is brickwalled, autotuned slop. Good songs can be found here and there, some without much detectable autotune/pitch correction, but his best albums are definitely 1970-98.
      By the way, "Drumming Is My Madness" isn't one of his better songs, but, you have the album! There's some great stuff there! "Private Property", "Wrack My Brain", "Attention", "Stop And Take The Time To Smell The Roses", "Dead Giveaway", "You Belong To Me", "Sure To Fall" and "You Got A Nice Way" are all good songs. The outtake "Wake Up" dies a death but the choruses are very cool.
