    Most importantly, he was really talking to the people and communicating with them, unlike pure intellectuals. He is talking about the very issues people were concerned about, and talking sense. People can understand and relate to what he said, and are convinced by it. What a great and respectable statesman.

    Context: this is 1980 which means it is only 15 years after separation. So LKY's speech touched on the super fast improvements in SG. He wanted to get the best for SG.
    BUT is the PAP the same today?

    7:12 “The compassionate society, free medical bills, bus fares.” Who pays? Who creates wealth?
    8:01 Open system in America, vs closed, controlled, command economy of Soviet Union. The Chinese tried the communist model with their own modifications and it failed.
    10:46 “We are obsessed w/profits.” Yes, that’s how SG survives-if we have no profit, who pays for all of this? You make profit into a dirty word, and SG dies.
    12:45 Don’t believe that because you can change governments at election time that you’re going to progress. When you cast your vote remember it’s sacred because it’s something you can’t change until the next 5 years, by which time irreparable harm would have been done. There’s one crucial quality-political judgement and the ability to _move a people._ If you can’t move a people to go in the direction which your policies tell you you must go, it will fail. You’ve got to convince them, and for that you need a whole multiplicity of instruments-press, TV, news conference, grassroots organizations, residence committees.

    Sure LKY will always have his critics and detractors, even though the domestic ones have benefited from his policies and legacy.
    Sure, Singapore, like any society in this world, will never be an utopia.
    But weigh the fruit of a man's lifetime work against his human failings,
    has he not done more good for the majority over successive generations, over the long term,
    than bad or evil?
    For all the international accolades and respect for LKY;
    his achievements and wisdom as an international statesman,
    for LKY to be born, raised, committed to Singapore as a leader,
    among 7-8 billion people in the world,
    many in Singapore should count ourselves lucky and even blessed to have him.

    PM Lee’s conflation of marital infidelity to corruption is a clever sleight of hand. He equated all of the PAP’s scandals - the Ridout Road conflict of interest, Iswaran’s alleged graft and Tan’s marital infidelity - with the Workers’ Party’s one scandal - an episode of marital infidelity that ended years ago. If Lee was already aware of Tan’s affair in 2020, why did he wait until February 2023 to have a ‘hard conversation’ with him?
